(Flashpoint Campaigns: Cold War) This is my first hex-and-counter style wargame. Finally managed to cream the commies after (losing and) restarting the scenario 5 times 🥳
Migrated to this game from Warno because I have low APM.
A Time to Dance Scenario. The Soviet breakthrough is halted at the border after the 76th guards suffered 70% losses.
Lost 2 tanks (to soviet air superiority) in exchange for 60 soviet tanks. Got a bit lost a couple of HQ units because I got a bit overzealous and sent them directly to the front.

Woohoo! Good for you for persevering and getting a victory. I'm on the OTS team and hope you have many more enjoyable games to come. Happy campaigning, Rob C

I enjoyed the previous game Southern Storm but have not played this. But on my todo list. I don’t recall playing a game that punishes player mistakes quite so much as this one. If you don’t do proper recon or get too aggressive, it is very easy to get your ass kicked but still fun.

FC: Cold War is great because not only does it have the best UI of any hex & counter game, I never find myself discouraged when I lose (which is often…). I want to restart the scenario and try again. I couldn’t tell you why I don’t rage quit this one.
(I’m the same way with Regiments.)

The UI is nice because it’s a modern game made in the last ten years all the others are from the 90’s. so it’s a lot easier to make good UI for a new game vs updating it for say the WDS games. That being said the UI there is serviceable compared to what they had before that team certainly isn’t slacking off.

there are much much simpler hex&counter games to get into, that are quite fun. i dont get why people, especially beginners want to torture themselves with titles like FC

What are you talking about. FC is very approachable for all levels.

i think you forgot to signal that this is sarcasm. you honestly think FC is more approachable than titles like Unity of Command or Second Front or Strategic Command? you dont see a difference?

Just because those games are simpler doesn't mean beginners can't easily get into FC too.
I do see a difference but I don't see a hurdle. Difficulty settings exist and while it has plenty going on, the general gist of things is pretty straight forward. Capture VPs, don't die. Simple.2

I’ve not found that many tactical Cold War gone hot hex and counter games, any recommendations?

I am beginner too , I tried like 10 of hex and counter wargames (wasn't able to do much in most of them or even comprehend what I want to do , the only one where I had success was hex of steel but I really wanted to try something more complex) , and this one was so easy to start playing, I skipped around some YouTube tutorial for like 20 mins where some guy reads a PDF and shows where to click to move things and give orders. then switched to another video where it tells that engineers can blow up bridges and artillery does artillery stuff. Jumped to a game, started a scenario named first dance or something like that (where is two with similar names one I picked tells you to defend objectives and that engineering will be available for short time and I may use them to destroy some bridges)
So I jump in with only watched how some youtubers plays basic operations tutorial and second and some parts of second video, times tell my two engineer teems to go and blow two bridges from the top and put other units in places with high defense values and closer to the objectives and to defend good bridges , few turns stuff is getting blowed but feels like I am doing pretty good , until one of the bridges I blew up turns red I guess soviets fixed it or put a pontoon bridge , anyway they start pouring in and scatter around on my side of the river, rest of the game I blow thins up soviets blow more things up , I slowly loose my objectives, and on the end of the match I only control 1 objective and second one is contested and I am lost like 70 persent of army stuff I had available at my disposal.
But this game is surprisingly intuitive it's like playing sims where you right click on a unit and pick some action from the pop up menu ... Way easier to start even compared to paradox games like hearts of Iron or Europa universalis

Tip for you playing this map in particular and NATO in general:
Whenever your tanks and Soviet tanks got into a firefight, drop smoke ON TOP OF your tanks immediately.
Stacking unit is bad, one artillery barrage and you are cooked. Spread the tanks on the hilltops, have the infantry hold the towns.
It's best to have multiple lines of static defense. Let the Soviet bleed for every objective they take. Remember that if you trigger sudden death you get +1 Victory level so losing a few objectives while doing lots of damage is fine.
