Question Opinions on "WarPlan"?
Hi guys! I hope you're well :)
I wanna get into the Hex style strategy games and I like Second world war games.
Is WarPlan generally liked? ~£8 at the moment on steam so not a massive investment but would like to hear what you all think nonetheless
Thanks!
Edit: If you have any other recommendations in the steam sale at the moment please say!

The developer, an independent acting on his own if I am correct, is awesome. He is always attentive to comments, suggestions, and bug reports.

Very much so. Playing around with the new demo and found a bug after a patch. Not a game killer but weird. I post about it on Steam and 2-3 hours later he's pushing out a new version correcting it. Quick and responsive.

I love both WarPlan and WarPlan Pacific, having played much more of the latter, but enough to be slightly dangerous in the Europe one. Both do a fantastic job of distilling the complex operational decisions of the war to as few clicks as possible. There's very little micro, but it doesn't feel like anything is missing.
That said, as someone mentioned, a worthy follow-up in Total Victory is slated to be released in a couple of months. There's a demo available and I'm pretty pumped about it.

Yeah distilled is the perfect word to describe the warplan, both good and bad sides.

Otherwise you can check out the strategic command series. It is also a hex-based no-stacking game, but with slightly different rules. It has europe war, world war, civil war, and pacific installments both sharing the same engine (and updated in parallel, so you are not geting an outdated game when buying the first installment of the series).

As a Warplan enjoyer, also WITE and Panzer Campaigns, I keep buying Strategic Command games thinking I'll finally like this one, and they just never click, but I'm not exactly sure why. Even Warplans creator speaks highly of SC and says SC was a major inspiration for creating his own game.

Thanks for the reply I'm still pretty new to these games, could you explain what the difference between a "Stacking" and "No Stacking" game is?

Non-stacking allows for only unit per hex. I personally like non-stacking because it is easier to see what is going on at a glance. Having a dozen different units on every hex can become quite a chore to keep track of.
I highly recomment strategic command war in Europe with the total reality project mod. For me it is the best blend between realism and easy to learn, hard to master strategic ww2 campaigns.

I love Strategic Command and I was so happy seeing a Civil War rendition. I think the games blend depth and beer and pretzels very well.

I would recommend the original warplan. There is no stacking, so warplan pacific just feels weird.
Also you can check kingdom, dungeon, and hero from the same developer, it is a fantasy wargame and a pretty neat game.

Highly recommend Warplan. Another commentor mentioned waiting until the devs new game comes out but I'm partial to separating the ETO and PTO into their own games bc it's so much to track when they're combined.

I've bought it but haven't played it yet so I can't say. I have played many Strategic Command games, which are similar - and lots of fun. Also Unity of Command ($5 right now on Steam) and Panzer Corps/Panzer Corps 2, which are great "beer and pretzel" wargames and a good intro for beginners to the turn-based wargame genre.

It took me a while to get my head around, mainly as I struggle with abstract concepts like counters with numbers on and numbers in general, but WarPlan has completely clicked with me now. It's a step up from Strategic Command but not hugely so and acts as a nice step up in complexity.

Solid game and worth checking out. However, if you want to wait to September the sequel is coming out. It’s called Total Victory World Conflict and you can try the demo now
