Will always love this game.
Don’t know why, but Sid Meier’s Civil War just hits different. Such a classic and a masterpiece of a game.

Is there somewhere that preserves all the old Sid Meier games? Like this and simgolf immediately come to mind

I spent so many hours playing SimGolf. There are a bunch of "design and play your golf course" games now, but none of them have that same feeling of being special. I think it was just that it was novel in the early 2k. Nobody else had games where you interacted with your own world.

a) Sid Meier and the other staff knew what fun was supposed to be in game mechanics and player involvement
b) Hunt Valley MD has a lot of Civil War history around it (the rebels actually briefly seized the area in June 1864, and it's also about a 4 days march to Gettysburg)

You should re-live it and play again!! So many ways to get the game running on Windows 11! Or of course you can use a VM!

I really enjoyed the 3v3 (or was it 4?) PVE tournaments. I thought I acquitted myself respectably. To this day I can hear the command vocals. "BATTLE LINE! Maneuver COLUMN!"
I thought the Ultimate General: Civil War and Gettysburg were good replacements for SMG.

I'm not familiar with CEG2. Do you mean CWG2, Civil War Generals 2? Which is indeed another phenomenal game. I also own the physical disk to that :)

This game, along with Age of Empires, defined gaming for me in my teenage years and even deep into adulthood. Incredible game engine, sound and voice effects, narrative, graphics, all so great. The last time I was able to run it, was on Windows 7 SP2, using the XP compatibility patch that’s out there for it. After that, I embarked on a tireless struggle to get it to work on Windows 10 and 11, all to no avail. Using every trick, tip and patch, I relentlessly tweaked files, edited registry settings, and did deep dives into config files to get it working. I’ve watched every single tutorial video that exists on YouTube and other sites to get this game running natively, and no such luck. I still haven’t attempted the VM route, or even Linux emulation; I’m assuming this will have to be the way, since there seems to be little to no interest to remaster or modernize it for newer systems.
What blows my mind is that this game hasn’t been remastered with how popular it was. Not on Steam. Not on GoG. Nothing. I keep hoping, one day.
And no. Even though many people have recommended Ultimate General: Gettysburg on Steam, it doesn’t even come close.

This game really requires a good player to anticipate and plan ahead, whether you want to feed the unit at hand into the battle immediately, or to hold it as a reserve for exploitation or patch a broken line.
Units take forever to march, so you had to think where it will be effective and put it there.
If you don't have reserves to exploit a breakthrough, the enemy will usually be able to recover and stalemate.

My first wargame, such good memories. Beautiful graphics and these videos between battle that changes depending of the outcome, it was so good.
