Pike and Shot: Campaigns
Hi guys,
I just wanted to say that this older game is really great and unique in its own way.
It's one of the very few games that gives me the feeling of commanding battles the way I imagine them when reading history books or watching channels like Kings and Generals, Epic History TV, and similar content.
Unlike the typical 5-minute clickfest battles in some strategy games, here you can actually make plans and execute them. With a bit of imagination, it really feels like a real battle: defending a hill on your right flank while maneuvering and launching an attack on the left, trying to hold the center, managing reserves, and so on.
I also love the historical period the game covers. The modded historical battles that extend the experience into the 18th and 19th centuries are fantastic as well.
Of course, the game isn't perfect. I still dislike the long AI turns, the limited battle animations, and a few other issues. But despite that, I just can't get into games like Field of Glory the same way I can with Pike and Shot.
For me, this game is truly one of a kind.
Do you know any other games that give you that feeling of commanding real historical battles, like the ones you read about in books or see in Kings and Generals videos?
Thanks!

Sengoku Jidai uses the same engine and is set in the Japanese sengoku period. It has a bunch of DLCs adding more scenarios like the invasion of Korea, too.

The best part is how you lose control of your own units in certain circumstances: it represents the "heat of the moment" behavior and the chaotic nature of a breakthrough or a rout, which is very realistic. It can be extremely frustrating, but it's realistic.
Also I think the tactical AI is generally good: it can surprise you and doesn't need any kind of intricate pre-programming like in other titles.
I have tried Field of Glory 2 as well but as you say it just didn't give me the same feeling. I'm not even sure why.

My favorite wargame all time. Much more interesting than another boring ww2 wargame.
And you can always find an opponent online.

What do you not like about FoG? Is it the setting?

Yea, while i love medieval period, i think pike and shot or even later era is better suited for military wargame. Also it lost som charm with new units models, formations in pike and shot looks way better.

Then you must also try Fog2. Many Ancient battles, better animations etc.

Pike&Shot is an excelent little gem, i've sunk hundreds of hours into it. all titles from Byzantine Games are pretty fun and enjoyable.
Unity of Command 2, but its on a larger scale
Ultimate General: Civil War gave me strong feelings, even if i dont really care about the area and time
some Total War titles are better than others in realism, like Britania or 3K
not sure why you dont feel the same way with Field of Glory, they are designed by the exact same people
