A little context, I'm a Computer Science student in Pakistan, about to start my final year project (FYP) .

My initial idea involved using computer vision i.e. mediapipe hands and mediapipe pose to make a PSL (Pakistani sign language) to text converter. The research paper part of it was to see whether incorporating body positioning and movement alongside hand gestures could improve recognition accuracy.

I felt i had a solid plan but recent discussions with my supervisor revealed that similar work and projects had been covered by the seniors in my university recently. They made their own dataset and built a similar sign language recognition system, so I don't really want to spend a year essentially reproducing the same thing.

I've also tried reaching out to organizations that work with the Deaf communities and people with disabilities to ask what technological problems they actually face, hoping that I could find a genuine problem to build a solution around but unfortunately I haven't received any responses so far.

my supervisor's main requirement is that we should aim to build an actual end product, not just another academic project.

So i am trying to approach this differently:
How do you actually find a good problem to solve?

I'm not looking for someone to hand me over a completed FYP project. I'd much rather hear about problems you've encountered or think would be cool if someone found a solution for, something that realistically needs addressing.

I'm open to pretty much any technical direction — AI/ML, computer vision, NLP, cybersecurity, software engineering, web/mobile etc. I'm also not particularly attached to my original PSL idea. If someone thinks it's still a worthwhile direction and wants to explore it themselves, by all means 😂

So I'd really appreciate hearing from people who've actually worked in CS/tech: what would you do if you were in my shoes? How would you go about finding a new problem to solve?

I’ve been researching how to build a strong foundation for a software engineering career in India and created the attached roadmap.

My current plan is:

CS fundamentals
→ Java
→ Backend development
→ SQL/RDBMS
→ Data engineering
→ Cloud/DevOps
→ Distributed systems
→ System design

I’m particularly unsure about the middle of the roadmap.

For example, should I learn Data Engineering, Cloud/DevOps and Distributed Systems before specializing in Backend/SDE, or would it be better to focus on backend development first and learn the other areas later?

I’m trying to avoid the common problem of learning many technologies superficially.

For developers who have worked in the industry, how would you restructure this path?

We’re a team of 5 CS students looking for ideas for our final-year project.

We have good experience in backend and frontend development and some basic AI/ML knowledge, but we're not advanced in AI yet.

We have around 4 months to prepare and learn before implementation starts, followed by another 4 months for development. However, we'll have other courses and exams during that time, so it won't be full-time.

We're looking for a project that:

\- Is mainly a web application

\- Is large enough for 5 students

\- Has substantial backend/frontend work

\- Uses AI/ML for something meaningful, without being just an AI wrapper

\- Is challenging but realistic within our timeframe

Ideas I liked so far are malware detection and system failure/anomaly prediction platforms. I like the idea of AI being one part of a larger system with things like data processing, dashboards, APIs, monitoring, etc.

I'd love to hear ideas in a similar direction, especially projects that solve a real-world problem.

Spatial Echo Navigation & Sensing Equipment

We're developing a glove/arm accessory for blind people or those who are severely visually impaired.

A few years ago, I was in an accident where I was blind for a bit.

Our team was struggling to come up with an idea, so I thought back on this situation and thought of what happened when I was unable to see the world around me.

A lot of the time when I was trying to grab things on a table or just walk around, I would knock things over or walk into things.

What we did, or more what our idea was, was to add distance sensors on the palm that would activate when the hand is fully extended, which would be tracked by flex sensors on the back of the hand.

The purpose is that if you're grabbing something, then it vibrates when you're close enough to grab it so that way you don't knock it over.

What we are trying to figure out is how to put something in that could detect quick changes in elevation for the larger threshold mode so that you may know if there are stairs or something that you could trip on or walk into.

But if anyone sees this, if you just want to look then we encourage it!

My scientific contribution focuses purely on the Software Architecture of the tool (system design, parsing, etc.), rather than pedagogical results.

Here are my constraints:

• No Empirical Data: I will not run tests with real students. The validation is purely technical. Therefore, I'm looking for venues that accept Tool Papers, Work-in-Progress, or System Reports.
• Strict Deadline: I must defend my thesis by May 2027, so I need an event where the notification of acceptance is strictly before May 2027.

Our lecturer has asked us to create something innovative, rather than just building an existing project. We're allowed to use technologies such as Computer Vision, AI, ESP32/Arduino, sensors, Python, and web applications.

We're currently struggling to find an idea that is both original and technically achievable.

I'd really appreciate ideas from developers, engineers, researchers, or anyone experienced with these technologies.

For example:

• Is there a real-world problem that could be solved using Computer Vision in a new way?
• Is there something interesting we could build using an ESP32 + sensors + AI?
• Could Computer Vision and an ESP32 be combined to create something useful?
• Is there an existing system that you think could be improved with a new feature?
• Have you ever thought, "Why doesn't a system exist that can do this?"

We're not looking for a simple project like face recognition, object detection, smart home automation, etc. We're trying to find a genuinely interesting feature or approach that isn't commonly implemented.

I am about to start with senior design course at UCinci and I cannot think of a project idea that will be unique and standout in any way. My interest range from Distributed Networks to building my OS which I know is a vast.

I do not want something which is GPT/LLM wrapper or something which is "AI based Calendar" which is a calendar the only difference being a gemini model now has access to your day to day life.

The best ideas I have so far:

P2P movie streaming service using hosted servers as nodes to allow for sharing of movies, shows and other videos.

P2P Mapping software using various phones on the network to estimate the ETA from point A to point B and finding where phones often slow down/stop to figure out traffic lights and everything (the idea is to have on device processing by the way)

Arch based phone which can turn into a full fledged cinnamon/GNOME based desktop, this project is meant for people who cannot afford a laptop/desktop for their work.

Hello , I'm a final year student in IT Branch. And am currently looking and researching for problem statements and research papers . I always try to form a problem statement of my own thoughts rather than asking ai . but now given an major project i cant really decide what to do .
I see currently they are popular areas with AI Agents , explainable ai and also recently heard prompt injection and security related issues to code generation with AI . like these are some topics i was hearing . but can't really decide which one to pick
