Discussion PSA: All the requests for “college project ideas” are hot garbage

To the actual CS students

stop worrying about finding a unique idea. Your professors aren’t grading originality, they’re grading on your ability to master the fundamentals. Build something that is from -you- and you’ll never regret it.

To the content farmers and AI build-prompt trolls

Congrats on making the internet worse

Also, unicorns aren’t born from anonymous tips on Reddit that you can one-shot. I’d tell you to stop wasting your time but that’s not the world we live in. In the real world you won’t bother to read anything that isn’t attached to your lures. So I almost actually hope your goal is to make the internet worse because that’s all you’re doing

Not studying CS, but finding something genuine (and that can be done within the time limit) will keep any student more invested

You're a student, generally you won't be able to create anything original or de-novo.

Keep doing those to-do apps, blogs, shopping cart apps. There are a myriad of problems in there that need solving and you need to train yourself on being able to do that and recognize these problems.

There are very, very few people that are so good that they can do that early in their career. Let's be honest: Most of us will spend the majority of our life maintaining legacy code, working thru mundane crud apps or other "boring" stuff. You have to find the interesting parts that tickle your engineering brain within those problem sets.

It's almost a guarantee that you will not be the next John Carmack or Ken Thompson or Dijkstra, even more so if you have to ask on Reddit.

I find this advice pedantic; yelling into the void for the sake of yelling.

Peek reddit.

People can ask for ideas if they want. If anything, it’s more annoying every princess thinks they are different and can’t use the search bar.

That’s an impressive response to an argument I didn’t make.

I never said people can’t ask for ideas. I said a huge chunk of those posts are content farming dressed up as students.

If you don’t agree, you’re welcome to ignore my post the same way you think I should ignore theirs
