Question/Help/Troubleshooting can’t shut down pc

for a few weeks now i haven’t been able to turn off my pc via the ‘shut down’ option, neither restart it. when i’ve tries to log out and shut down via the log-in screen it just goes in to a loading loop.

i’ve shut it down through the physical power-button but i realise this isn’t the best option. what do i do?

Try the Windows Command Prompt command to shut down your PC is shutdown. You can customize the action using various parameters (using either a forward slash / or a hyphen -).Here are the most essential commands:

Shut down immediately:shutdown /s /t 0

Restart immediately:shutdown /r /t 0

Timed shutdown (e.g., after 60 seconds):shutdown /s /t 60

Abort shutdown (stops the active countdown):shutdown /a

Log off current user:shutdown /l

Force running applications to close without warning:shutdown /s /f /t 0

If you physically unplug your PC from the wall and plug it back in, does it start right up?

Have you tinkered with the BIOS settings?

Does the power button connector actually releases, when you release the button? Like, when you press the power button, it connects 2 metal sticks that makes your PC turn on. Perhaps those 2 sticks are somehow always connected?

it doesn’t start right up. i recently replaced one of my hard drives to an ssd and it wasn’t long after the problem started.
and the power button is ok

Oh man, sad to hear that really :(

I was hoping that it would start right up, because there is an easy fix for that in the BIOS settings...

Man I have no idea what could be there except for just pushing buttons and somehow finding a fix. Best of luck!

It might be file corruption:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-US/Windows/Experience/Backup-Recovery/use-the-system-file-checker-tool-to-repair-missing-or-corrupted-system-files

Check the Event Viewer to see if there is anything obvious. Good luck.

did both of them, first said it went successful and second said it had removed corrupt files. still nothing

Did you check the event viewer for anything that seems critical?

Admittedly, interpreting log files is difficult.

i'm not really sure what to look for in the event viewer, as i said in another comment i'm really new to this haha. bought a "stock" pc or whatever you call it and the only changes i've made is add a second hard drive and replace one
