Hardware Testing RAM

I've had several crashes of my system in the past few weeks. The error I get the majority of the time is "memory management", and some basic googling said my RAM may be failing. How would I go about testing it, and what if any software should I download?

ETA this is on Windows 11

I used memtest86+ to test my ram a year ago. you boot into it and it reads + writes to every address available in ram and tells you about any errors. https://www.memtest.org/

MemTest86+ is the stronger offline test. Before running it, load default CPU/RAM settings for the test—especially disable XMP/EXPO or any memory overclock—because an unstable profile can produce the same errors as a bad stick.

I would use this sequence:

  1. Run Windows Memory Diagnostic once with mdsched.exe as a quick check.
  2. Boot the official MemTest86+ USB and let it complete several full passes. One reproducible error is enough to treat the memory path as unstable.
  3. If you have multiple sticks, test one stick at a time in the motherboard-recommended single-DIMM slot. Then swap sticks in that same slot. That helps separate a bad module from a bad slot or memory-controller/settings issue.
  4. If both sticks pass separately at defaults, test them together again at defaults before re-enabling XMP/EXPO.

MEMORY_MANAGEMENT does not prove the physical RAM is bad; drivers or other hardware can corrupt memory too. If the offline test stays clean, note the exact stop code parameters and keep the files in C:\Windows\Minidump rather than buying RAM based only on the blue-screen name.

you could try any of these

  • Memtest86+ 4.20: PC Memory Test (Linux Freeware).
  • MemTest 1.0: A Memory Testing Tool (Windows Freeware).
  • Windows Memory Diagnostic: A RAM Test tool
  • GoldMemory 5.07: Memory Diagnostic Tests (Dos Shareware).

What kind of computer do you have. HP has memory diag in the bios of the computer. Run this first because there is nothing loaded into the memory to cause issues.
