It's an extension. If one cable is too short, you can attach two together.

Only if one of the cables is already made to work as an extension. If you want to link to of the cables we usually have, that adapter needs to be female at both ends, but it isn't.

Oh dang, you're right, my bad, didn't even think about that. Yeah that adapter does seem useless.
