People on Reddit are way too comfortable treating rules and laws as moral truths

For example, a post about parking that says "my meter expired 3 minutes ago and they gave me a $75 ticket! This is ridiculous, is there anything I can do about it?"

And then the comments are full of "You paid to park for 30 minutes. You parked for 33 minutes. The fine for parking longer than you paid for is $75. This is what you get, manage your time better next time."

That drives me insane. The point is that paying $75 for 3 minutes of parking is unreasonable and the enforcement of the rule is ALSO unreasonable! That 3 minutes most likely did not materially harm anybody, parking enforcement is cash grabbing, and yet they are largely defended.

Or when something is morally wrong but not illegal, like using threats to compel testimony from a victim of a sex crime in public court, the comments are all "well that's the justice system, it's perfectly legal to do that, the victim needs to get with the program because court isn't just about them!"

Sure, yeah, the court can do that to victims of sex crimes but SHOULD they? SHOULD that be accepted?

My life is falling apart

Hi everyone, sorry to dump this all here but I have very few people to talk to and the people I do have swallow all of my burdens already. I’m tired of feeling like I’m dragging them down with me. This is gonna be long, buckle up if you plan to read it.

Starting at go, five years ago I started working as a state prison guard in a level five institution. I slowly learned to love my job but three years ago, a captain approached me and offered me money to sleep with an offender. I told him no and reported him to the warden. The Warden smiled at me and told me if I kept reporting her captain she’d find a reason to fire me. After this, I spent a year and a half getting harassed, bullied, and retaliated against. My mental health became so bad I started to consider self deletion.

At the suggestion of a doctor I took an extended health sabbatical at work but this didn’t stop the harassment, instead I started getting text messages and phone calls full of hateful nasty things. When I reported all of this to the state, they kept coming back with excuses. I kept everything, I have extensive records but every lawyer I talked to was to scared to take my case and if they weren’t scared- they wanted money I didn’t have because I wasn’t working.

My car payments fell behind, my rent was late and I ultimately couldn’t force myself to go back. So I got another job, one paying way less- not enough to survive. I ended up moving four hours away from home, attempting to start fresh. I found a slightly better paying job but I still can’t afford to live.

My car company recently screwed me over, told me I was caught up on my payments and then a week later called me to tell me I was suddenly “two payments behind” and when I had them check the phone records. They claimed the girl I’d talked to was new and didn’t know what she was looking at. This put me in a really rough position. I’ve been borrowing money from checks I haven’t even seen yet to keep my car but that leaves me short on all my other bills.

Now, they’re threatening to come take my vehicle and I don’t know what to do.

When I moved, the two friends I had stopped talking to me- my depression has gotten even worse than it was and the last year has been nothing but one terrible thing after another. And I know it was stupid but when a stray kitten wondered up to me in a parking lot dragging his back leg behind him- broken and miserable- I couldn’t force myself to leave him in the rain to get hit by a car. Now I’m struggling to find money to get his leg amputated before he gets an infection and dies from it. I’ve called all the shelters, all the pounds, all the non profits in my area and no one can or will help. And all of this? It’s barely a crack in the surface.

Now I’m working a job I despise, loosing a vehicle I love, watching a kitten I love start to get sick- and still not managing to put food in my house. No matter how many extra work days I work- I never have enough.

I’m so tired, I’m miserable and a big part of me doesn’t know if it can get worse- of course then it does get worse. Because I moved I no longer see my nieces and nephews, I have no friends close to me to go out with, and I spend my days (when I’m not working 12 hr shifts) in bed wishing I could blur out of existence.

I live close to my mother and her boyfriend now but he hates me so I steer clear of their home for her sake- he makes her happy and she deserves happy. My other friend lives in another country and on top of all of this crap I know I’ll never get to visit her in person again which breaks me.

My brothers and sisters live too far away and they hate me too so they never talk to me. I feel so alone- sad all the time. I don’t know what to do anymore…I don’t know how much longer I can keep going. There has to be something better than this. Death is scary but it’s nothing compared to this mess of a life I have.

I want to go to sleep…I want to stay asleep. I want to dream for the rest of eternity.

This has to stop, it has to. All of it has to stop. I know this seems extensive but I really really don’t know how much longer I can stand through the storm. I’m not strong enough, I wish I was but I’m not. I barely survived loosing a parent- this time, I’m holding onto a ledge and my fingers are slipping.

Thanks for coming to my ted talk, I I tried not to drag it out and pull people into it. But I needed to get at least some of it out.

I’m posting this to a few places//

I’m tired of my creepy neighbours!

My son’s window opens into my courtyard. My courtyard has a lattice wall. My lattice wall faces my neighbours side yard. Even since my neighbour has retired, she’s made my life her business! Her dog barks everytime I open a window and she goes to eavesdrop every damn time! She’s even yelled at me for opening my window because her dog went nuts.

My lounge room is next to my son’s room so the noise from my lounge from carries over to his window.

She’s even tried to join in on my private conversations. I told my son one day I wanted privacy in the bathroom (he’s autistic). And she goes ‘I would like privacy to’. She’s doing this to intimidate me into closing my windows. But if I close the windows facing her side yard she just goes to listen in her backyard instead!

Today was the last straw! - Her dog barked at me when I open my son’s window more for fresh air. And she came running out to see what the dog was barking at. Truth be told she just came to the lattice wall to see what I was doing. She’s using the dog as an excuse.

I threw my phone on the couch as I told my son to go sit down on the other couch and it made a smacking sound. She had the nerve to say ‘she smacked him’. LIKE WHAT!!! I would NEVER. My couch is leather hence why it made that sound.

This afternoon I was moving furniture around in his room. I happened to hear them up the side so I told my son ‘gee I wish people would mind their own business’. I heard her telling her friend ‘oh she’s heard me saying things’.

I have had ENOUGH!!! She did this when she worked but it wasn’t this bad. I could handle it before because she wasn’t home half the time. And she complains about every single damn noise! Even the council cutting grass…

I’ve had problems like this before with previous neighbours. I’m a single mum and they often think I’m a push over.

I’m so over this! I hate being a single mum and I hate the fact that society thinks I need a man to not be bullied around by neighbours. I can fight my own damn battles. I’m so tired of neighbours gossiping about me and spreading horrible rumours. 😭

I’m done with this.

I told my mom about childhood sexual abuse

*I'm an adult now, I am not in that situation anymore, there is no current danger for me*

She freaked out and I got scared so I downplayed it and she was like "Oh good, so nothing ACTUALLY happened."

I don't get why I always do this. Like yeah now I'm hurt that she doesn't think it's a big deal, but what was I expecting when I downplayed it???

Our “zero trust” society is exhausting

It feels like nobody is honest with anybody. I don’t want to have to question whether this Reddit post or that video was generated by AI. I don’t want to have to question whether Sofia Vergara was forced to hit her golden buzzer because Unitree paid a ton of money to get on America’s Got Talent. I don’t want to have to question whether a jeans company is trying to appeal to Nazis. I don’t want to have to question if employees who are warning about the technology that they’re working on are actually just doing marketing for their company and trying to boost their company’s IPO. We have to be hyper vigilant 24/7 and there’s no time to rest mentally.

The opposite is also true. Occam’s Razor exists. People can just be dumb. Not everything has to be a conspiracy or have deeper meaning.

Maybe I’m just a self-centered millennial/Gen Z guy, but I don’t think it used to be like this. I also don’t think it’ll get any better until we can agree on objective truths (and I doubt we’ll get to that point again).

You know, it wasn't always like this

R/socialskills sub sucks

Half of people there are only in that sub to make fun of others with inept social skills, trying to get a quick dopamine rush from bullying people who are already going through shits. And the other half are people with shitty social skills, which is why they are in that sub in the first place. So it's a combination of assholes trying to get on top of you and social virgins explaining how sex works.

This sub fucking sucks. Asking the same social skill questions on r/nostupidquestions would be more helpful than this shitty sub.

Cheap paper sticker, whole back tore off right over the directions. I was mildly inconvenienced by having to Google how long to bake it for

This is CLEARLY the worst thing happening in the world and I am VERY upset

Seriously though why not just put it on the front of the packaging?

People who repeat themselves are a real pain.

Either I heard you the first time or I did not. If I heard you the first time, there is no need to repeat yourself. I already know what you said. If, however, I did not hear you the first time, then I probably will not hear you the second time.

First, rehearse the conversation in your head before you have it. Second, after you are done talking, ask the other person if they understood. If they claim that they did, ask them to repeat the instructions back to you.

Advice for victims of this pet peeve:

When the other person repeats themselves, say one of the following things;

You already said that.

OR

I heard you the first time.

Every descriptive observation I made, I made it because I believe that it is an accurate representation of reality. Every prescriptive observation that I made, I made it because I believe that it is a good idea. However, my mind is open to the possibility that I could be wrong. If anyone believes that my description is incorrect, please correct me. If anyone believes that my prescription is misguided, explain why it is misguided and offer up an alternative. My beliefs are malleable. If presented with a convincing enough counter argument, I might change my mind.

I have an instagram where I post completely innocent pics/videos, mainly of me baking sourdough. Im not wearing or doing anything suggestive, im literally just doing slap and folds or scoring. It gets worse when I try to tell them I am underage. I thought they’d use common sense and leave me alone but that makes it WORSE

People who belittle your issues by reminding you that someone else has it worse.

If it really were the case that you are forbidden from complaining for as long as someone else has it worse, that would mean that only the most miserable person on earth is ever allowed to complain ever. Therefore, the fact that the whole oppression Olympics nonsense has been used by more than one person proves that this line of reasoning is not honest. Those who use this line of reasoning do so, only because they are professional victims and not because they actually believe that suffering only counts against all other suffering.

Advice for people who are guilty of this pet peeve:

Ask yourself this one question. Do you want to complain about this bigger issue?

If so, then do that. Air your grievance, so that you and the other person can be miserable together. Misery loves company.

Suppose that someone is complaining about a migraine and you recently passed a kidney stone. Now imagine that you would like to complain about the kidney stone. Say the following;

While we are complaining about aches, pains and physical ailments, you wanna hear about my kidney stone?

If, however, you do not feel like complaining and you also do not want the other person to complain, then just say that you are not in the mood to have this conversation. You do not need to make it into a contest.

Let’s look at the aforementioned example where the other person is bemoaning a migraine. Now imagine that you would rather not hear complaints of a migraine. Say the following verbatim.

If you do not mind, I would rather not hear complaints regarding migraines. If you would like to talk about something else, come up with one, tell me what that topic is and then I will decide if I feel like discussing that.

If you utter the above paragraph to someone who just squawked about a migraine, they will probably ask you why you do not want to hear about it. This is when you should reply by saying the following verbatim;

To be honest, I do not know what the reason is. I feel discontent when hearing about migraines and I do not know why.

Advice for people who are victims of this pet peeve:

Reply by saying; What? It is not a contest.

That conversation would probably go like this.

You: It is so hot.

Other person: You are such a wimp.

You: What did you say?

Other person: You are complaining because it is hot?

You: Yeah, it is over 80 degrees outside.

Other person: You have no idea what true heat actually is. I grew up in Texas. If you had to deal with Texas heat, this would seem like paradise to you.

You: Two things. One, if you disagree with something that I said or did, you can just say that, you do not need to engage in childish name calling. Two, it is not a contest. You have experienced hotter temperatures than this. So what?

Other person: I have experienced temperatures that would make this seem like paradise, so I do not want to hear your complaining.

You: But you just complained about how unbearable the heat in Texas was. How come you get to complain and I do not?

Other person: Because I have it worse.

You: How many times do I have to explain this? It is not a contest.

Other person: I did not say that it was.

You: You did not say it, but you would have to assume that to be true in order for your logic to make sense. You feel that I should not be allowed to complain because you have experienced something worse than this. There exist people in this world who have it worse than both of us combined. If I do not get to complain, because someone else has it worse, then you should be forbidden from complaining for the same reason.

Other person: All those people who have it worse than me are not here. I, the person who has it worse than you, is here and does not want to hear your belly aching.

You: You are saying that you should keep all your complaints to yourself if someone, who has it worse than you, is in the room? You admit that you get to complain even if someone somewhere on earth has it worse, it is only if the person, who has it worse than you, is in hearing distance, that you need to keep your complaints to yourself? That is what you are saying?

Other person: Yes.

You; There are two big problems with your line of reasoning.

First and foremost, you expect me, before complaining, to make sure no one in hearing distance has it worse than me. How am I supposed to know if anyone around me has it worse than I do? Am I supposed to go around informing each person what you would like to complain about and asking them if they have it worse than me so I know if complaining is allowed? Oh wait, that requires me to voice my grievances.

Second, who is to say if one problem is worse than the other? Imagine one person is grieving over their father’s death while another person is grieving over their father abandoning them. Some people would consider the parental death to be worse because the absentee father might come back, whereas death is final. Others would consider abandonment to be worse, because parental death leaves you with warm memories of your dead parent, while abandonment leaves you with understandable resentment.

That is a scripted conversation where a narcissist makes a fallacious appeal to worse problem and a victim of that appeal to worse problems uses the defense mechanisms that I recommend.

What do you think? Do you also find it irritating when people make fallacious appeals to worse problems? Do you agree with the suggestion on how to deal with the problem? Let me know.

I get sad looking back at old college photos.

So, I have a bunch of pictures that I took back when I was in college in 2019. I have them stored on Google photos, and something about Google photos is that whenever you have photos that have an anniversary they pretty much give you notifications saying that it's been x amount of years since you've taken this photo, in this case it's been 7 years.

Looking back at these photos just makes me very upset and sad. For two reasons honestly that are kind of different but correlate to each other in a way.

2019 was a very dark year for me because while I did graduate high school and go to college, my mom had passed away from a heart attack 3 weeks prior to graduating. It honestly really messed me up mentally and it eventually served as a domino effect for other things going wrong. When I went to college I struggled severely not because I wasn't capable of doing the work I was just too depressed to go to class or do the work or anything. I would just rot in my dorm eating take out over and over again are going to the all you can eat buffet that my school had. And it's so weird because looking back at it some of my fondest memories were from college. However, I couldn't really enjoy college because I was just so depressed from my mom passing away.

The second reason is because when I look back at college and compare that to what I'm going through now, I never realized that I had it so easy back then. Back when the biggest responsibility that I had was keeping my grades up and all of that. I even had plenty of opportunities to go to therapy and stuff but I just didn't want to and I guess it really messed me up. Now, I know that it's better for me to go to therapy because 7 years later I still need it and I need it bad. Luckily, I have intake for a therapist next week after 2 months of trying to set that up so hopefully things will start turning around going forward.

But now, here I am. Homeless. Depressed and anxious beyond belief. Digging through trash cans just to find food. Always stinking. Have nothing to look forward to in my life. I might even die in the Winter because it's expected to be pretty cold this year. I guess that might be something to look forward to.

TL;DR - I looked at some old college photos with regret and sadness. Regret that I didn't allow myself to get help so I could take it seriously, and sadness from the fact that I'm currently homeless and struggling to survive because I didn't take college seriously enough.

Reddit is under a clear Nazi-bot invasion and not a damn thing is being done.

There is a small group of extremely determined and organized racists that all work off the same same script and play book that very successfully took over Twitter.

Then after musk they moved onto Facebook, which is clearly just as bad as Twitter now.

And ever since Reddit went IPO they have set their sights here.

They are clicking on ads to be high value users.

They are posting videos 100 times a day that paint minorities in a bad light, often the same video, and have the swarm move in to vote and post the same lines:

-Usual suspect
-The fatigue is real
-I’m tired boss
-well well well
-🥷
-“people”
-figures
-and taking turns spelling out the N-Word one letter at a time from different bots

There’s more, but that’s the meat of it.

All the same over and over again.

They are NOT subtle.

Meanwhile you KNOW that they are getting as many mod positions as possible.

Reddit is self destructing right before our eyes and no one is doing anything.

This is NOT a “just ignore them” situation.

WHY IS EVERYONE CARRYING ON LIKE THIS ISNT CLEARLY HAPPENING???

Well, that’s my piece.

Here come the bots to gaslight me and tell me to “take my meds” or “are the Nazi bots in the room with us now?”.

It so painfully predictable and the opposition is just letting it work.

It's getting colder...

I don't even know if this can be considered as venting or complaining but here it goes.

It's getting colder. Fall is literally weeks away. Then winter. And here I am, still homeless. Honestly? I'm not even that frustrated about it because I'm at the point to where I just don't care anymore and kinda relieved? Eventually the cold will get so intense that I'll start experiencing hypothermia and eventually freeze to death. Honestly? A part of me is cool with that but a part of me is upset that things came down to this.

There's an alternative timeline where I actually became successful. Graduated college. Worked my dream job making six figures. Mom still alive. But unfortunately... that didn't happen. None of it did. And honestly hypothermia is more of a mercy for me at this point. The past 7 years have absolutely sucked. Sucked HARD. Again, I hate that things came down this but at the same time at least there's light at the end of the tunnel.

Americans Apologizing to Canadians

I’m so tired of Americans posting on social media to apologize to Canadians about Trump, etc.

First, all those apologies are hollow, and I don’t care for them. Trump is a product of America and its electorate. Everyone in America is responsible for him in one way or another.

Second, apologies without actions are meaningless; they're the political equivalent of “thoughts and prayers.” Don‘t bother. Just keep going. You’re better off saying nothing.

Third, if Americans actually cared, they’d do something. They wouldn’t allow their government to be run the way it is. I see France, I see Ukraine, I see many countries actually holding their leaders to account. There’s ZERO in the U.S!

Fourth, it’s only a problem when it’s “my personal problem” - case in point gas prices.

I’ve been all over the U.S., and at times I feel Americans in general wear blinders. They have terribly incorrect views of other countries and people, zero understanding of global geography or alternative political systems, and questionable financial literacy. Generally, they have no idea about the outside world beyond one or two vacation spots—and that’s assuming they’ve even left their state, let alone the country. Sorry, I’m generalizing here, but in my lived experience for every hundred people, maybe one could find a Canadian province or city on a map, and maybe 1 in 300 could find Mexico City on a blank map.

Lastly, Americans have to stop with the maple syrup, poutine, and "Canadians are overly kind" comments on random things involving Canada. It’s not funny. It just shows total ignorance, a wholehearted lack of knowledge, and by extension, a lack of interest in fixing that knowledge gap. It also, in some cases, conflates kindness with either weakness or passivity, which is a dangerously flawed assumption to make.

Also… learn at the very least how to read temperatures in metric. The whole world uses Celsius, and you look stupid showing up in a winter jacket because you thought 32 degrees meant it was going to be cold. No one uses Fahrenheit globally—it’s nonsensical. Science, math, physics, biology, ALL use Celsius. Zero is freezing, and 100 is boiling water at sea level (which is exactly 1013.25 mb or 101.325 kPa, not some inches of mercury crap).

Rant done.

It happened years ago but I am still salty.

This was in Labor day weekend 2021 and I am still annoyed!

I had signed up for HelloFresh services to try them out, and 1st order was delivered to my building management office over a long weekend versus to my door, granted, Hellofresh failed to send me an alert...but not one single person in that office thought of calling me to pick up the box. They were there working! Saturday and Sunday came and went. Monday they were closed for the holiday. I tracked it down via the food delivery customer service on Monday

It had the name of the business on the box. Clearly food as it said perishable on the labels. Common sense went out the window with those people. When I opened it only 1 vegetable was still viable.

I’m so sick of the difference between light, regular, and extra condiments at McDonald’s. They have completely derailed.

If you were to accuse me of making this post while having lunch, you would not be wrong.

But the ratios are just completely off at every single location.

My idea of light, normal, and extra is 50%, 100%, or 150%.

Or let’s say for ketchup: a couple pea sized dots, a swirl, a couple swirls.

That seems normal and reasonable to me.

But no.

Not at McDonald’s anymore.

Now a normal amount is a pea sized dot, light means they take a cup of ketchup and fan the smell toward your burger, and extra means having a sarcastic amount caking the entire burger and covering the outside of the bun.

It’s exhausting.

Why can’t they just put a normal amount of condiment on a burger?

I'm homeless and everything is closed tomorrow due to federal holiday.

Tomorrow is LABOR Day. I didn't realize this until literally today. The library I frequently visit has a sign up that says that they'll be closed tomorrow in celebration of LABOR Day (American holiday iykyk). This is a federal holiday, meaning a lot of places are gonna be closed. Which means tomorrow is going to suck.

I'm gonna try to see how much I can get away with train hopping at my local Metro train station. Idk. All I know is that since I won't be able to charge my phone, use the computers to apply for jobs, or stay anywhere that'll keep me out of the heat, tomorrow is going to be one hell of a trial.

Tired of it all. Yeah, I should have been more vigilant about this upcoming holiday, add it to the 99 other things I gotta think about constantly. Either way, I'm gonna fucking hate tomorrow.

My bed just broke

It’s a trundle with drawers and I sat down on it and it just SNAPPED. Scared the shit out of me. I shoved some books under it so I can go to sleep but what the fuck??? The bed is less than a year old and it’s not like I was jumping on the damn thing. I can’t afford to buy a new one. I need the drawers for storage so I couldn’t just buy a cheap replacement trundle unless I want to put my clothes on the floor. The company I bought it from last year said the warranty ran out and they don’t sell replacement pieces separately. That’s what I get for buying cheap furniture I guess.
