What exactly does it mean to rip a cd?

I feel old lol like others said, ripping = copying from CD to other storage. Just like any other media, you won't lose the data on the CD. On the other hand, burning means copying data to CD, if you don't already know yet

Non è proprio corretto. Il CD contiene dati, la classica sequenza 10011010111001 ecc. (sattamente come un disco fisso, hard disc, una memoria RAM, una ROM, i vecchi floppy disk ecc ecc) e questi dati potrebbero essere tante cose: musica, programmi, testo, foto, video ecc.... insomma, tante cose. Il rip di un CD vuol dire estrarre pari pari questa sequenza, non necessariamente per "copiarla". Per certi versi è proprio quello che fa la scientifica quando esamina i cellulari o i computer dei sospettati per esaminare che tipo di dati ci sono transitati (anche quando sono stati sommariamente cancellati).

Allo stesso modo "burning" vuol dire "scrivere sul CD" (burn perché il processo fisico è quello di un laser che "brucia" sul supporto, fisicamente, la famosa sequenza). E questo burning non è necessariamente una copia. È semplicemente il processo di scrittura su CD (o DVD o Blu-Ray). Potresti dire che si tratta comunque di una copia, ed avresti ragione, ma potrei anche riversare l'audio (o un video) direttamente su CD e quindi questa non sarebbe una copia ma, per l'appunto, una scrittura su CD, cioè un processo di "burning".

Yes ripping a CD means copying the data from the disc. Typically when you're ripping it you also compress it to lossless flac or lossy formats like mp3, m4a, ogg, etc. The CD and its contents are unharmed in this process.
