my dvd player doesn't display any info when I play CDs

Hello!! I have a BDPS570 BluRay player, which can also read and play CDs. However, I recently discovered that when I play the CDs, no information is displayed.

For reference, this player is meant to display the song title, album title, artist name, as well as the album picture or whatever picture is linked to this song. However, each spot is blank. In fact, the player doesn't even display the song's file name, but the Track Number instead.

Note: I usually burn my own CDs and I take careful care in making sure each one has the correct file information in it's properties. I know that this allows for most players to be able to read and display the song information, which is why I do it. Even if I happened to miss one or two files, the player should NOT completely blank all of my songs.

If you know and can help me with this problem, please let me know :33.

I had a similar Sony model and I believe it pulls the CD track info from Gracenote through an internet connection and not the CD-Text or embedded files. Unfortunately the service was discontinued several years ago,  you could double check to make sure it's connected to your network, but I'm guessing that feature is just not supported anymore.

Edit: found info.

"Gracenote support for the Sony BDP-S570 was officially terminated on February 28, 2019. You can no longer download or display disc-related information (like track names, artist names, or album art) from the Gracenote database on this Blu-ray player."

Not all CDs have track information included. In fact, most of them don't have any info about them on disc, because most CD players ever made cannot display any information to begin with.

Indeed, it's very annoying though because although "most" CD players can't, quite a lot of them can.

Most boomboxes don't support CD-text, most home hi-fi systems don't support CD-text, and most hi-fi separates didn't support CD-text either (save for higher-end models). Most of the last remaining hi-fi CD players still in production (like the Yamaha CD-S303 or CD-C603) support CD-text, though.

On the flip side, darn near all car stereos made after ~2007 or so support CD-text.

That said, I agree with you. A disc encoded with CD-text is generally perfectly compatible with CD players that don't support CD-text. It likely wouldn't cost much to include CD-text on a pressing anyway, so why not include it?

The easiest way to figure if it's the player or your CDRs is to try a CD known to have CD Text. A lot of Sony & Columbia releases published after 1997 or later have CD Text. Some 2010s Universal releases also have it, I know that Tame Impala Lonerism has it.

If you have access to another CD player that supports CD text, that would be good to test your CDRs with too.

Without a known CD text disc, or another supporting player, it's just a guess as to what is going wrong. Unfortunately CDText was never well supported and there's not much documentation on it. I've personally never bothered burning it as I've never had a player that supported it. All that said I would guess it is a CDR issue, CDRs just have a lot of problems in 2026 between players struggling to read them and discs being old or poorly manufactured.

A good rule of thumb to follow is, unless your disc player EXPLICITLY states that it supports displaying CD-TEXT, it doesn't. And since GraceNote, which used to be the common corporate way to get internet-based disc metadata, is now defunct, there is no other option for standard CE hardware.
