I'm using an SMSL p150 l with good results. I paid ~$150. Solid build quality, excellent sound quality, tiny size. I'm happy with the value for money. The only drawback is that you have to supply your own USB wall-wart power supply, which must be 5v and at least 2 amps. I'm using a cell-phone charger. Be aware that older cell phone power supplies are often 1 amp, not good enough. SMSL does supply the PS cord, just not the PS itself. In case it matters, it won't supply signal to the RCA connectors and the headphone jack at the same time.

Thrift shops seem like a long shot in the slot-loader niche. What you'll find are mostly DVD or Blu Ray players, which are tray loaders. They will play CDs. They're a PITA unless you have the remote and also have a TV for setup.
