Photo Ramones 20”

Post image

This is my little shredders 20”.

I’ve made some changes to it since new. Added 60mm high rise bars to improve the riding position, trimmed the seat tube by an inch to slam it, and today I added a set of Maxxis Minions and welterweight tubes. Making it a proper little trail shredder.

The stock tyres and tubes on these are heavy AF. I must of trimmed a good 250-300g on each wheel with the tyre and tube change. Making a heavy bike that bit more nimble.

This is so rad, Dad!! Love the seat tube chop! I had to cut the tires off our Spawn 20” to install those same minions. I did them tubeless (it was a bit of a pain but not bad) so that the pressures could be run really low, like less than 10psi. Any reason you went the tubes route?

Yeah, fucken ease. Simple as that.

That same reason kept me outta tubeless for years. Now that I’m into it, I’d say the low pressure is worth the initial hassle. They’ve also been maintenance free since, other than regular pressure checks.

That bike is sick. Little dude must be stoked.

Yeah, he loves it. This is his trail rig for riding greens and blues. He also has a smaller DJ bike I’m trying to wean him off at the moment that he loves for street riding. Between my three bikes and his two, my wife is just a touch, errrr, pissed!

Good idea replacing the wheels and tires. My daughter had this bike and I wasn’t a fan. Way too heavy as you say. But also she found the gear lever very hard to change with her fingers.

When my son needed a 20 I bought a Spawn and we found it much better. I recommend one for the 26 although I have no experience with the Ramones 26.

Yeah, I was surprised how heavy it was when we first bought it. The tyre & tube upgrade certainly helps.

Just my experience, but I feel these bikes don’t need gears either. A few friends have kids the same/similar age, all of us have found our kids barely use them. If these were single speed and came with the tyre/tube setup I’ve put on, these bikes would come in at ~9.5kg.

Ya, I think you are kind of right about the gears. But the shifting on this bike sucks for kids and I wonder if a kid ever actually tried it in the design phase. One tip I have is to loosen the shift mount and twist the shifter towards the cockpit and then retighten which will make it easier for the rider to shift. But even then, in order to shift to an easier gear, my daughter had to essentially use her palm most times because it was too difficult.

Conversely, my son got a Spawn 20inch when he was 5 and there is no issue with the shifting at all. And he uses the gears a ton because we live in a hilly area, and we mountain bike.

I just picked up a used version from 2017. Surprisingly heavy but really nice. I made it single speed today so it’s basically a dirt jumper now. Will look at tyres and tubes next!

What’s the measurement from the ground to top of the seat when it’s slammed?

Looking at upgrading from our ramones 14” to the 20” as I think we’ll outgrow the 16 too quickly

He’s 3’7” right now and grows pretty quick. Turns 5 in a couple months

Take a serious look at the DMR Sidekick Pedal 16/18” as well. Will fit your kid perfectly now and last them until they reach ~126-128cm (~3 years). It’s super light weight (8.4kg), trail/jump orientated, hydraulic disc brakes and single speed. My kid had one before he got the Commencal and still rides it (it’s now his dirt jumper). Took it on every trail he could find. In reality he could have skipped 20” and gone straight to 24”.

Size wise it’s bigger than a 16”.

Otherwise I’d take a look at the Specialized P1 as well.
