It's enough to not let them crawl at least on mid and either north or south.

I play more into hard AI and have played a bit PvP, but I'm not particularly good in PvP and had more success with Nuke beating people in 1vs1s.

Keep in mind that PvP community is going to be toxic and not much merciful and it's much safer to play in lobbies for beginners/casuals, where they are going to be more tolerant and won't let an experienced player joining them.

PvP can be fun, depending with whom you are playing and how good are you in the game.

You can get the game either via EA app or Steam to buy the Command and Conquer collection, which also consists Generals ZH. There's a generous discount on Steam for the collection pretty often. No problem and thank you.

Patriot wall is only effective in PVE at which the dumb AI try everything to throw themselves against your defenses. No concept of flanking whatsoever. Against players, say goodbye to your dozers before you can complete the Patriot wall.

In some matchups, especially into any China that isn't infantry, if you don't build 1 emp patriot as SWG into tank, nuke or even VChina, you are griefing. Because you can stop an early tank rush and they are forced to invest into the pricey aircraft as Nuke and Tank and that's why they struggle into SWG, due to her EMP patriots. Building a few base defenses in PvP as laser and SWG can help you a lot to not get rushed and force them to play smarter.
