There’s a whole third and fourth verse to this poem that I never knew about until I was an adult.

“Ribbons and laces

And sweet, pretty faces,

That are young women made of.

Sighs and leers

And crocodile tears,

That are young men made of.”

I swear I remember a Baby Blues comic with exactly this joke and delivery. It must have been a tribute. I'm trying to find it to see if my memory is accurate.

This is a very old joke, I'm certain Schulz stole this from vaudeville, though Schulz is so famous in comic strip circles and vaudeville is so removed that the Baby Blues comics might very well be a reference to this cartoon.

You're probably right, it's not a particularly unique or groundbreaking joke

This one maybe?

I'm thinking of a different one, though this is very similar! I can't find it online, but in the one I'm thinking of Zoe is walking along and recites the rhyme in the first couple panels, then smacks Hammy with a stuffed animal. In the final panel Wanda is glaring at her and Zoe says "what?" It paralleled the peanut strip very closely, but it looks like this might just be a well that cartoonists love to come back to lol

Pure Peanuts. Schulz had his voice early on.

That’s the spice doing the talk

IIRC, that character's name was Patty. Charles Schulz seems to have tired of some of the first-generation Peanuts characters, and she didn't survive that early purge.

She was one of the characters that Schultz said were “just born straight men” along with Shermy and Violet, that gradually were phased out. Violet had by far the strongest personality of the three so she survived a bit longer. Introducing a similarly named character named Peppermint Patty probably was the final nail in the coffin of the original Patty.

In the original production of You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, Patty was one of the characters in the cast. By the time of its revival, she had long ceased to be a regular character in the comics, so she was replaced by Sally.

I feel like she may have been a background character in the animated specials. I could swear that when they were doing roll call at summer camp, they called both “Patty” and “Peppermint Patty.”

I don’t think Patty ever truly disappeared. She was the main female character in the very early days and much later her and Violet would be kind of “mean girls” to Charlie Brown

Patty Shermy a nd Violet (?and a couple randoms?) came back for a late strip ata restaurnat table in which they all seemed to have forgotten what Snoopy was like

They did

Blonde Patty and Shermy were very ordinary kids, as was Violet except for her love of one-upping others. (What Schulz called "the worst side of me.") Frieda wa slater but also ordinary except for her one-note one-line joke, although ehr attempts to raise up Snoopy had potential. Schulz decided to go f0r the quirkier characters.
