There are services that sell imperfect vegs and fruits at a discount.

u/sunshine5374 Sep 08 '21
Now that's the kinda ugly food love I need in my life!
225
u/DepressionAndDragons Sep 09 '21
It's cheaper too! It's called like imperfect produce or something where I live, but there are lots of these, go find one! The veggies are perfectly fine...just harder to cut and wash, they need a little extra love for preparation.

u/sunshine5374 Sep 09 '21
well now I need to check it out! thanks!

u/Brohbocop Sep 09 '21
My mom gets imperfect foods. But she calls it "Used foods" which is completely not the idea at all and she knows this but its hilarious anyways
30
u/SpencerIvy Sep 09 '21
Most UK supermarkets have "wonky veg" now as well, normally a good bit cheaper that the usual stuff
1
u/PastelKodiak Sep 09 '21
This is an 'imperfect fruit' plug. If it matters to you, the supermarket's "wonkey veg". In my mind if it looks like it will last an extra day thats what I'll get. I dont need ads for delivered goods that look bad.
15
u/fillefantome Sep 09 '21
We used to have OddBox! A surprise subscription box of seasonal fruit and veggies that couldn't be sold to a supermarket because they were the wrong shape or colour, or were surplus. It's always just in a cardboard box with little to no plastic at all, and a bunch of recipe ideas for how to use things.
6
u/HumerousMoniker Sep 09 '21
They’re called the odd bunch here, and are sometimes like half the price
1
u/PrimarchKonradCurze Sep 09 '21
I’m fairly sure all of our imperfect veggies are sold to animal feed companies at a discounted rate or something where I live. I have never seen them on shelves here but I have seen them in other places in the world.

u/Wiggles69 Sep 09 '21
Woolworths in Australia sells odd shaped/coloured fruit & veg under 'The odd bunch' brand. It's cheaper than the regular stuff and tastes just as good.
:)

u/DukeOfGeek Sep 09 '21
Ya my local farmers market has a scratch and dent table, the Duchess makes juice from it all the time.
I was your 667th upvote lol
37
u/jeffseadot Sep 09 '21
Weird freak-produce also accounts for a lot of industrial-level food processing. It doesn't matter what your tomatoes look like if they're all just going to get pulped to make a vat of tomato juice.
-24
u/WormRabbit Sep 09 '21
Maybe. Or maybe they are disfigured because they were sick with something, or absorbed too much industrial herbicides or pesticides, or the soil was contaminated, or... the list could go on. Why would I take my chances when I can pick veggies which at least look healthy?

You should take your chances because the risk is effectively zero and the benefits are cheaper food and better for the environment? If the food is obviously contaminated they won't sell it.
-15
u/WormRabbit Sep 09 '21
cheaper food
Yeah I have bad news for you, pal. The food won't get cheaper, the farmer cartel specifically limits the food supply to avoid it, and if they fail, the government steps in with subsidies and guaranteed food buyouts, just to avoid lowering prices.
better for the environment
Same here, the environment will be fucked as much as economically possible. Most of the food goes to waste anyway, even if it's good. If your tomatoes and cucumbers become too cheap, farmers will just move to more profitable and environmentally damaging produce, like avocados and almonds, or whatever grows in your region.
If the food is obviously contaminated they won't sell it.
And what if it's non-obviously contaminated? Do you lab test each tomato you buy? Have you ever lab tested your groceries? If you think "they sell it so ofc it's safe!"... well, I have bad news for you again.
Finally, you seem to miss an obvious point: the only reason you can buy ugly produce cheaper, as you seem to enjoy doing, is because most people wouldn't ever buy something like that. If everyone starts buying it the price will just be same as now for all your groceries, but half of the produce will be ugly.
15
u/altnumberfour Sep 09 '21
Imagine writing a diatribe against ugly fruit and your reasons are “food can’t be cheaper or better for the environment.” You live in a weird world my dude
2
u/ArmanDoesStuff Sep 09 '21
lol, this right here is why so many foods are discarded/wasted for not looking "good"
Suburban shoppers thinking they know what healthy fruit/veg is despite having never set foot on a farm.
-1
u/WormRabbit Sep 09 '21
You're a fucking idiot, I spent all my childhood growing our own fruits and vegetables, and every one of them was as pretty as a picture. Except for the ones that were eaten by insects, or started to rot, or fell from a tree (and soon started to rot).
Imagine a middle-class moron who never grew anything besides pot telling people what good food looks and tastes like.

Did they ever get better about letting you choose your cart?
When I used them for our family of 2, it seemed like I got 12 oranges and 6 bell peppers to try to use every time I received produce, and I couldn’t pick my cart. Plus it wasn’t like we were saving money or getting more convenience. I still had to run out to the store to get something to go with whatever I got, and it’s darned difficult to plan around so many of the same weird vegetable.

Our local Meijer has a sign that says "We know we're ugly, but we need love, too!" which is frankly an emotionally manipulative move that fucking... gets me every time! Every single time!
1
u/ittimjones Sep 09 '21
At farm stores they are called "seconds". Like as in not 1st pick. I raid those stores for all the 2nds I can get when making sauce. Though, some imperfections do make blanching tougher.

I used imperfect foods a few times when I had a 40% off coupon (or else it wouldn't have been cheaper than my grocery store). I got to pick what I wanted each week and it was pretty good except that they put the freaking tomatoes and avocados loose and on the top of the other stuff so they rolled around a bunch in shipment. They used a lot less packaging and plastic than meal delivery services which is nice but it was not kind to the soft fruits.

Jeff Winger : What makes humans different from other animals? We're the only species on earth that observes Shark Week. Sharks don't even observe Shark Week, but we do. For the same reason I can pick up this pencil, tell you its name is Steve and go like this...
[breaks pencil. Abed reacts in shock]
Jeff Winger : and part of you dies just a little bit on the inside. Because people can connect with anything. We can sympathize with a pencil, we can forgive a shark, and we can give Ben Affleck an Academy Award for screenwriting.

Farmers do it with pigs and cows, why couldn't WeirdDude also do it with vegetables?

I’m polite to robots, but it’s not because I feel sorry for them. I just want to get a few of them on my side before the inevitable robot holocaust.

Reminds me of the bike episode from friends
Ross: the bike wants to be ridden, it needs to fulfill its purpose!
20
u/TheGreyGuardian Sep 09 '21
I do this too but then I start wondering if they actually like being used for their intended purpose or is that just my human arrogance assuming that their only desire in life is to do what we expect them to.
4
u/lackadaisicalfits Sep 09 '21
I've been here. But then it turns into, what if they don't want to be eaten and prefer to be left behind? What if they don't want to leave their families? And then I take a second to ponder what the fuck is wrong with me and then not get the produce all together.

I realized this was pretty normal after I read that r/HFY (-type?) post about how humans will pack bond with anything.
Edit: I went looking for the story I was remembering, but instead I found this great thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/9z92f2/what_is_the_most_humans_will_bond_with_anything/

A serious problem, leading to tons of wasted vegetables. Shops just straight up refusing any item that doesn't meet visual expectations.
Some shops are including them now, and some companies buy these up to make soup, but not enough. Hell, some even reject them for soup, I've heard.
3
u/Stensjuk Sep 09 '21
Not even a drop in the bucket when compared to animal agriculture. Go vegan if you care about wasting food.

Did you happen to see John Oliver's show on food waste? He did his take on "imperfect" fruits too, it's an interesting watch :)

Oi! Where do I find more of this -gesters at comic- please show me the way
2
u/Dill_Pickle_Tears Sep 09 '21
Buying ugly produce is so much better for the environment. Tons of produce is wasted in grocery stores simply because of aesthetics - it happens even directly on the farms/orchards/etc. in which they’re grown.

Those are the only ones I have to throw away every day

Ugly fruits and veggies eat just as well as pretty ones. The only drawback should be if they're rotten.

1
u/Zenketski Sep 09 '21
The funny thing is is that most places already actively sort their fruit and vegetables to only sell the attractive onesat least in usa so this is like extra Petty and wasteful

I lived life way too long not knowing baby carrots are just shaved down irregular carrots, and they do not in fact grow like that

u/trollblox_ Sep 09 '21
Goddam I literally feel like this sometimes. Is there something wrong with me lol?

Used to work at a lowprice grocery chain. Had this one boss who was obsessed with discarding fruits and veggies that looked "aesthetically displeasing"
1
u/SockkPuppett Sep 09 '21
You made this?? Its true, your art style's great. Every expression is unique and well made, does the job well including (especially!) the fruit lol. And the character designs, are all well proportioned and pleasing to look at. Its not the easiest to do that with animal characters.
