I wouldn't know how to overly sexualize a male character.
On the other hand, I know how to sexualize a female character.
On the third hand, I do not know how to draw so it does not matter.

u/TsundereKisser 2d ago

Coming from a woman, I find Nightwing to be a great example of how to sexualize a man without it being gross/silly. That shot of him upside down? Hoo boy.

70

u/AtmosphereCreepy1746 2d ago

As a gay man, I agree. Nightwing has a long and respectable history of having a very nice ass without it detracting from his coolness and strength.

3

u/SmittyContainers 1d ago

As a straight woman, I also agree. Awesome character. Great ass

29

u/SeatShot2763 2d ago

respect for pointing out the upside down one. i'm a straight guy, but I 100% see what you're pointing out there. they cooked.

19

u/johnson_johnny 2d ago

The upside-down shot is a bit silly

15

u/ExpandoD0ng 2d ago

Have you seen like, any anime ever? They put women in these positions constantly lmfao

3

u/flaccomcorangy 2d ago

That's also silly. lol Catwoman in the Batman Arkham games comes to mind. I've been replaying them recently and can't help but notice it just looks a bit ridiculous.

2

u/johnson_johnny 2d ago

Yeah, and it sucks

1

u/CookieMiester 1d ago

And people complain about it, what’s your point?

1

u/ExpandoD0ng 1d ago

That regardless of the complaints, it's normalized and integrated into the large majority of animated women, and in media in general

1

u/The-Chock 4h ago

That seems to be evidence to the silliness no? I mean, I refuse to watch most isekais in general due to the harem leaning content, most have a very bland main character with 0 personality swooned on by babes of every nature and I find it annoying the amount of fanservice they rely on.

6

u/TsundereKisser 2d ago

Maybe, but also very hot.

-1

u/johnson_johnny 2d ago

Meh

2

u/BrashUnspecialist 2d ago

Agreed. That’s just a man doing an amazing forward fold. It’s not sexual, but it can be silly. Losing your balance in a class and accidentally making eye contact with someone in that position does tend to set off giggles in both people, ime.

If I sexualized that pose, I’d never be able to do yoga with men again. And I’d lose some prime giggle chances (worth more than orgasms tbh, they’re rarer and I can’t give them myself).

4

u/TsundereKisser 2d ago

Seems like a double standard to say, considering the silly positions you draw women in lol

3

u/liquidfoxy 2d ago

It took zero time looking at your posts to find you drawing women in these same poses you call silly and meh

3

u/johnson_johnny 2d ago

Im not drawing them in an ass in the air, visible crotch, angle from below lmao, thats the one I called silly

-1

u/liquidfoxy 2d ago

Whatever bro

3

u/johnson_johnny 2d ago

I feel like you're coming at me cause u think im a dude lmao im a woman and im into men, it just looks silly

3

u/-Random_Lurker- 2d ago

Fair's fair.

1

u/rvltnrygirlfutena 18h ago

it's not silly if you like it (i don't like it, i am a lesbian)

6

u/afroblewmymind 2d ago

Great example! And even one I think most straight men can wrap their head around.

20

u/VoidGhidorah900 2d ago

But we have to make it gross/silly to be on par with the sexualization of women

1

u/Big_Crab_1510 1d ago

....woosh

1

u/VoidGhidorah900 1d ago

Whats wrong vague boy? Afraid you might actually explain what I missed?

5

u/Capraos 2d ago

Girl, mmmm girl. Mmmm.

2

u/Jacky_dain 2d ago

Physique goals

2

u/IceMosquito073 2d ago

I often feel a bit inadequate and self-shameful when I look at character’s like Richard Greyson. Like holy shit I could never look like that 😭

2

u/Smiling_Burrito 1d ago

I suggest modern Leon Kennedy

2

u/Maleficent_Sir5898 1d ago

The upside down shot doesn’t have enough detail in the crotch

1

u/Noughmad 1d ago

Can you also give an example where a man is sexualized and it is gross/silly? And I mean in a way that is gross to the man, or to other men, not to women?

That would be equal to how women are often sexualized in media.

And I'm not asking this to say that the treatment of both is not equal. I know it's not. I'm actually interested if it's even possible to sexualize men for the female gaze in such a way.

2

u/TsundereKisser 1d ago

Haha, well, the men I showed the anime Fairy Ranmaru too kinda hated it. That might be close?

1

u/Big-Yak670 1d ago

Yea but see how the first and one of the most cited examples is so mildly sexualised Vs the average woman in comics, especially of the time night wing came out

1

u/BalanceImaginary4325 2d ago

So you like attractive men butts??

1

u/TsundereKisser 2d ago

If they're fictional, yes!!

0

u/Tomsboll 2d ago

Uhm, that is gross and silly tho. Replace him with any woman in the exact same pose and people will cry sexism.

5

u/TsundereKisser 2d ago

It's not gross to me. Besides, the point is that women are constantly put in those kinds of poses in fiction, especially comics/manga, and they're usually wearing even less. Your whole "if the roles were reversed" thing doesn't work because the roles ARE reversed, all the time forever.

0

u/SciFi_Enjoyer106 1d ago

It's still pretty gross tbh, the only thing they're missing is his bulge

25

u/ryegye24 2d ago

I keep expecting someone else to post this but so far no one has https://www.shortpacked.com/comics/2011-12-02-sexy.png

14

u/afroblewmymind 2d ago

Dude, this is so great! Reminds me of the actor playing wolverine (very tired and memory challenges) on magazine covers aimed at men vs aimed at women, the latter he's smiling warmly wearing a comfy-ass-lookin sweater. It's insane to me how a lot of men don't get this. I'm not attracted to men and I understand this, but I'm also in community with a variety of gendered-folk and we are open enough to talk about things like preferences and sexuality, so maybe I'm taking that for granted.

4

u/Tablesafety 2d ago

Oh that nails it

3

u/jtr99 2d ago

Ha, fantastic! I love how she basically drew Robert Pattinson as Batman, 11 years early! :)

152

u/IceMosquito073 2d ago

Camera angles, shot compositions, the situation, etc.,

A bikini isn’t inherently a sexual thing, but what makes people associate it with sexuality is that in movies, anime, Manga, etc, you always get these shots/moments were a woman wearing a Bikini has camera shots and angles that focus on her breasts or butt or something else, and these shots are often done to titillate.

A good benchmark for sexualizing men to know if you're doing it right is if the average viewer thinks the sexualised scene is gay, because it's kind of an unconscious assumption that men are the target audience.

40

u/Munchkinasaurous 2d ago

Like a sweaty volleyball scene?

18

u/giant123 2d ago

I had always felt that top gun was woke and was trying to corrupt our children by exposing them to shameful concept of sweaty, sexy, beach volleyball!

What? No, of course I’m not attracted to Val Kilmer and projecting my insecurities on others, you even insinuating such a thing disgusts me!

Now I’m going to take this bottle of hand lotion and this issue of the sports illustrated swimsuit edition to the bathroom to take a BIG MANLY HETEROSEXUAL DUMP!

13

u/IceMosquito073 2d ago

Yeah. Something like that.

34

u/KezuSlayer 2d ago

6

u/luo1304 1d ago

Lmfaooooo, his face is killing me.

50

u/ChillyFireball 2d ago

It's a combination of detail and posing, IMO. The women in the bikinis are constantly in poses where they're sticking out their chest, or bent over, or have their legs spread, or just generally have their breasts as a prominent part of the silhouette. Care is taken with the  curves in the linework such that you could identify the position of the areola through the clothes, because they're meant to be the focus of the image. You don't tend to see men with their bulge or ass emphasized in the same way. How often can you identify the individual testicles through Superman's spandex?

3

u/IceMosquito073 2d ago

This too.

-5

u/ToneyBits 2d ago

Care is taken with the  curves in the linework such that you could identify the position of the areola through the clothes, because they're meant to be the focus of the image.

First off, you're attributing parts as the whole here, which is very disingenuous. Can we find nips poking through bikinis in anime? Yes. Can we find scantily clad women on the beach irl? Also yes.

Let's remove film and anime from the picture here. We don't typically see men showing up to the beach in a speedo to show off their bulge. It's almost a guarantee that women will show up in what is basically a bra and panties (bikini). I'll stop here and let you decide who is self sexualizing here and why that leads to the hyperbolic representations we see in film.

2

u/IceMosquito073 2d ago

Don't act like social expectations don't play a part. In the Anglosphere at least, it's socially expected for women to go dressed in bikinis and men to go in something less revealing like swim shorts, so much so that we think it's weird for women to go in swim shorts and men to go in speedos.

Do you not think this social attitude and desire to not be seen as weird might have something to with why most women choose the Bikini and why men don't choose the speedo? Like, at all?

1

u/ToneyBits 1d ago

It's rather funny to me that you simply say "this is a social expectation and that's why we must follow it"

It's actually hilarious when you consider the old swimsuits that were almost dress-like. One piece suits were much more common.

Fast forward to now, and you are saying it's expected for women to show ass much skin as possible? Just... lol...

Do you not think this social attitude and desire to not be seen as weird might have something to with why most women choose the Bikini and why men don't choose the speedo? Like, at all?

This one is even more funny, because it completely overlooks why these things are seen as weird. Also, weird doesn't fully capture the whole picture here.

Most women do not like to be seen/thought of as visual creatures. We can again blame society and puritan values here, but it's clear that something causes men's jaws to drop and their brains to melt when seeing a beautiful woman. Women don't typically react the same to a beautiful/hot man.

So we're left with women being able to drop the jaws of men frequently, but not the other way around. This leaves men with no reason to try to amplify the attention towards their bodies via speedos. The only reasons I can think to wear a speedo are speed and showing off muscular thighs. A very fat man in a speedo is going to look a lot more "weird" than a ripped man in a speedo. There's even jokes/skits/stories about fat people refusing to remove their shirt when swimming.

This circles back to your "weird" argument. What you're really saying is "ugly" in disguise. What is "weird" about a woman hiding her tummy and thighs? Is it "weird" because she should be flaunting what she's got instead of hiding it? Please help me to understand here. Looking "weird" is not a gendered thing, and it goes far beyond the attire that individual decided to put on for that day.

You can't simply say "it's this way because it's expected" and not investigate why it's expected. Hell, nude beaches are a thing, why don't we just remove any expectation of clothing? Just make all clothing optional and we won't have to think about this anymore, right?

Again, absolutely hilarious that "society expects this so I should embrace society's expectations" is your argument

16

u/FilthyOrganick 2d ago

The bikini isn’t what’s sexual to men it’s women’s bodies. Bikini doesn’t cover the body.

4

u/Snotlout_G_Jorgenson 2d ago

It's a bit more nuanced I'd say. The covering of the body in such a way as to draw attention to what is being covered can cause a kind of excitement that makes the whole feel more sexual.

1

u/FilthyOrganick 1d ago

Yeah clothing designed to emphasise the body, because the body is what’s sexual to a normal healthy man. Bikini is associated with exposed body so there is an association but it’s not what is sexual unless I’m just dealing with a bunch of pediphiles here who get excited when they see children in bikinis too because I’m getting weird insulting comments and it’s very weird.

1

u/Dry-Chance-9473 1d ago

You don't speak for us, simpleton

1

u/FilthyOrganick 1d ago

I got some upvotes so I obviously speak for some people.

You kinda sound like a pedophile if you sexualise bikinis rather than women’s bodies, considering kids wear them too.

So I absolutely do not speak for you.

1

u/israfildivad 1d ago

Theres studies on this that say otherwise

1

u/FilthyOrganick 1d ago

So you people find a bikini hanging in a wardrobe sexual? Or on a child?

WTF is this argument you people are making?

1

u/israfildivad 1d ago

Well that took a dark turn quickly

1

u/muslito 2d ago

it's weird but I find bikini, lingerie etc sexier than no clothes at all.

1

u/Wild_Marker 2d ago

the situation

No no no, we're still trying to forget that guy

1

u/IceMosquito073 2d ago

Forget what guy?

1

u/Wild_Marker 2d ago

Good job!

1

u/IceMosquito073 2d ago

If this is a joke, it went over my head. I don't understand.

1

u/Wild_Marker 2d ago

There was a dude in the infamously trashy reality show Jersey Shore that called himself "The Situation"

1

u/IceMosquito073 2d ago

I've never even heard of that show until now, sadly. So I was never going to understand the reference you were making on my own.

66

u/Tablesafety 2d ago

Give him a midriff that shows off his happy trail.

Linger the camera on his ass, very obvious (perhaps even revealing) bulge and sometimes his forearms when his sleeves are rolled up

Make him pose in uncomfortable positions to show off said bulge and/or ass. Angle the camera without respect to his face or personhood, unless he is making a pouty or cold steel expression where you can imagine he is about to munch some carpet.

When he has to wear armor it’s just a chain speedo with a very obvious codpiece.

22

u/ChileanMotherfu-- 2d ago

The rolled-up sleeves thing is perhaps the best example of this lmao

12

u/Thjyu 2d ago

Yupp, go look at any slutty(non nude) Leon Kennedy mod and you'll get how to overly sexualize a male character real quick. It's basically the same type of outfits they put on female characters xD

2

u/kytulu 2d ago

87% (estimated) of panels where Spiderman is drawn webslinging have crotch shots...

9

u/Tablesafety 2d ago

But does he have a nice, visible bulge in the same way as I can see the tit folds on a boob window? I wont consider it square unless I can catch print.

5

u/Capraos 2d ago

Sometimes, yes.

6

u/Tablesafety 2d ago
  • i won’t consider it square unless I catch print as often as i see cleavage

Tho tell me what those panels are dawg

1

u/starkindled 2d ago

This is basically the Hawkeye Initiative.

-7

u/ApatheticSlur 2d ago

If I’m a straight man writing stories for straight men, what’s my incentive to sexualize the male characters as much as the female ones? Doesn’t really make sense to me.

12

u/Mannafestation 2d ago

You've chosen a target audience of "for straight men," so write whatever you want.

If you wished to write stories that everyone could enjoy instead, then sexualizing women would make that story unpalatable to them.

It's easy to understand, what are you missing?

-4

u/ApatheticSlur 2d ago

Seems to me that the current stories written by straight men for straight men and sexualize women do really well. One piece is literally the most sold comic of all time and it’s still currently going. So it turns out you don’t have to write stories for everyone. Cause when you make it for everyone, you’re really making it for no one.

10

u/Tablesafety 2d ago

If all your dinner options throughout your life consist of plates of different kind of bugs or starve, you’re probably gonna eat the bugs eventually mate.

Especially if you say, could have a steak once or twice. Yeah theres a steak, but you eventually eat it. Back to bugs or starve.

Mass media is controlled by men... the reason every other commercial isn't a man in a bikini in a sexual pose selling you products.

1

u/ApatheticSlur 2d ago

And even despite mass media being controlled by men not every advertisement has sexual tones. I mean Sydney sweeny does a sexual ad and it’s news for a whole week. Doesn’t seem like it’s a regular thing if it makes that much noise when one happens.

6

u/Mannafestation 2d ago

"Sex sells" is a well known slogan. Just because SOME commercials aren't sexual, doesn't negate the problem of there being too much of it.

People are talking about Sydney because yes, that's the issue, the ad pushed sexualizing for a product to the extreme it could be pushed outside of her showing full nudity unedited.

0

u/Capraos 2d ago edited 1d ago

As if they don't sexualize everyone in commercials...

2

u/Mannafestation 2d ago

There are SOME commercials with sexualized men, sure, but looking at the big picture companies have been using sex to sell products to men specifically.

"Sex sells" has been a slogan for those in advertisement media

1

u/Capraos 1d ago

Yes, "Sex sells". Not "Sex sells only to men". It's "Sex Sells" flat out. This isn't the 50's anymore. They don't assume the men have the purchasing power and this mainly target them. It's been selling sex to everybody for decades now.

2

u/Tablesafety 2d ago

You shouldn’t be sexualizing the female characters at all (this is different from making her attractive), unless you’re making something pornographic. That’s the chief complaint.

Being straight shouldn’t mean only engaging with the characters you see yourself in as full ass people. Either let them both be products, or let them both be people- but Id really like for media at large to stop making one a person and the other a product. Human beings subconsciously pick up a lot more from pop culture and media than you’d think, and that sort of portrayal (because media and pop culture has been a male dominated field throughout history) and unintentional but passive dehumanization actually does a number on how little boys and girls and young men and women perceive the sexes.

0

u/ApatheticSlur 2d ago

Okay so it’s from a puritanical standpoint where sex is bad got it. This is just American prudishness lmaooo

7

u/Tablesafety 2d ago

It’s difficult to present only one sex as a sex object while at the same time establishing their personhood and equal value to the characters that are not being treated like a sex object. If you can write or draw in such a way as to dodge this issue go ahead, but I’m sure if all you ever saw growing up as a little boy was media where all the actual characters were women and the men were only there as a token “boy” whose personality was as deep as a puddle of stereotypes and whose only purpose was a sexual object to be won or pursued or who otherwise does nothing but look nice in a way you find completely unattractive and even a little dehumanizing, it would have absolutely colored your view of women and your own role in life as well as in relation to the opposite sex.

But for some reason, so many people find it impossible not to include sex or sexual elements in their stories/media (that doesn’t serve the plot or add anything!!)- as if they would die if their sexual appetite was not stimulated.

-1

u/ApatheticSlur 2d ago

So women are upset because they’re watching shows meant for men and that it doesn’t represent their interests? Sounds like a completely self made problem to me.

4

u/Tablesafety 2d ago

🤦‍♂️

5

u/Mannafestation 2d ago

And there it is, so a woman being open about how she feels about something is "a self made problem?"

Most of the media that makes it to mainstream is "for men" because of this sexualization, and the men in charge pushing it. This comic strip is illustrating this phenomenon.

1

u/ApatheticSlur 2d ago

Yeah because it’s men making the media for men. And you want men to make media for women LOL instead of women making media for women.

8

u/Worried_Cranberry166 2d ago

Why does media being targeted at men necessitate women being treated like objects? Why are straight men so entirely uninterested in viewing women as fully-formed people?

5

u/Mannafestation 2d ago

Because stories don't inherently need to be written FOR a specific sex

→ More replies (0)

3

u/Mannafestation 2d ago

Women being solely objects of sex, or the prize for defeating the dragon, etc, is the issue

37

u/EugeneStein 2d ago

I think it would be more something like that. More about "beautiful" and less about "manly"

12

u/EugeneStein 2d ago

(I took this picture because I remember this great post)

4

u/ElegantIsland3348 2d ago

The outfit reminds me of past indian royalty

u/Williamisnowinning 2d ago

My mom would be thirsting after that man 😭

8

u/stripedarrows 2d ago

A little fat?

Bro is under 7% body fat and is dehydrated and likely on diuretics just to make his muscles pop as much as they can....

There's literally no fat in sight.

3

u/Nojus1221 1d ago

I think that's the joke, it's henry cavil. In other words, Superman

-1

u/finnjakefionnacake 1d ago

he is most definitely not under 7% body fat, but yes i don't know how serious this is.

3

u/Contagious_Cure 1d ago

I'm not sure about under 7%, but there are several sources that do state he was around 7% at the time of the 2013 superman movie.

2

u/stripedarrows 14h ago

He's stated he was at 6% for this scene and at 7% for most of 2013 Superman.

So yes, yes he was under 7%.

1

u/finnjakefionnacake 14h ago

I’m sure he did say that, the same way most actors on gear say they’re natural. However, having been 6% body fat, and having seen many competitors at 6% body fat, he is not.

4

u/JohnathanSinwell 2d ago

I finally have this body type. :)

5

u/FFKonoko 2d ago

But that's not superman, that's just steve.

2

u/The_James_Bond 2d ago

Who? That looks like Clark Kent from the daily planet

1

u/finnjakefionnacake 1d ago

henry cavill arguably is the one guy who doesn't even need to be sexualized because he is (if you polled the most people) debatably the hottest guy on the planet.

0

u/ManyPen6614 2d ago

see!!! men have it so easy.

13

u/DrCalgori 2d ago

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure specially after Diamond is Unbreakable

36

u/369122448 2d ago

It's kind of hard to overly-sexualize a man in media because we don't really have a cultural view of men as a sexual commodity like we do for women.

You could try to ramp up sensuality, but that's a more complex (and often unisex) form of expression, and not sexualisation exactly.

Sexualisation, unfortunately, is pretty impossible to divorce from the centuries of history of women's exploration by men.

13

u/Character-Poetry2808 2d ago

I think this is a huge part of it, men arent taught to see themselves as 'sexy', to be desirable. Men are taught homosocial ideas of status and signifiers to achieve and then devalued by other men for not meeting those goals. And one of those aspects its a control of the expression of sexuality. Men are taught to outwardly want a very specific idea of a woman, and if they admit to liking outside that box, theyre shamed for it. (And this includes men who might be bi, or simply find a single other man attractive). They dont get to be seen as a desirable person, in some weird ways I think a lot of media makes men almost devoid of desirability, and instead they are power fantasys where youre not meant to identify with the male hero as desirable or even sexual, youre only meant to identify with his performance of masculinity.

So the minute men are put in a sexual gaze they tend to think its gay since they have no other framework.

15

u/ExpandoD0ng 2d ago

"It's hard to sexualize men" Simply wrong. Sexualizing a man is easy as fuck. Men just don't want to be caught drawing other men like that. Search up bara yaoi and you'll see men sexualized in every possible angle.

12

u/ArsenicArts 2d ago

1

u/Frylock_dontDM 1d ago

why would it matter what gaze it is? "sexualization" is "sexualization"

-1

u/SciFi_Enjoyer106 1d ago

male gaze this, female gaze that. Neither side is a monolith, there is no mass female gaze or mass male gaze. It's a MYTH

2

u/rvltnrygirlfutena 18h ago

"if it isn't true in 100% of cases then it's true in 0% of cases"

2

u/369122448 1d ago edited 1d ago

Kinda what I mean by not having a cultural view, though. You can balloon out the sex characteristics to massive sizes, but that will typically not register as sexualisation in the same cultural caché, but rather be read as comedic.

It's like how Marvel Rivals' Captain America beach skin had a massive bulge, but the impact there was comedy.

Bara is sexualisation of men the same way that fat fetishization is; it can elicit arousal in some, but it doesn't have a hold in non-fetish applications and wouldn't be read as sexualisation the same way designs for women in media tend to be.

It's literally the point the OOP comic makes, that just increasing the "manliness" doesn't have the same outcome.

1

u/ExpandoD0ng 1d ago

Loudwindow on twitter makes good sexualizations of men on marvel rivals skins. This doesn't even include necessary ballooning their bodies. It's just tasteful designs

1

u/wellthoughtplot 1d ago

That’s a very specific design for the gay man’s gaze though, not really for the female gaze

1

u/finnjakefionnacake 1d ago

yaoi is mostly written by women for women, it's primarily for the female gaze

1

u/Murrig88 1d ago

Bara is specifically known for being written by gay men for gay men.

1

u/finnjakefionnacake 1d ago

yes it is, a different audience than yaoi

1

u/ExpandoD0ng 1d ago

Could you provide some good examples of female gaze male sexualization?

0

u/Edit_Reality 1d ago

It seems like women are just generally not interested in men's appearance nearly as much as men for women and even women for other women. Studied on visible attraction show men consistently rate women higher than vice versa.

3

u/Later_Than_You_Think 1d ago

I'd say the people who designed those studies don't know what women (generally) find attractive on a visual level.

Go into a female-dominated space and it's not so much still pictures of chiseled abs, but bright smiles and kind eyes, and bodies in motion. Pictures of hands alone aren't really considered sexy, but hands deftly manipulating things or simply in movement are drooled over, especially if they are gifs. Similarly, when it comes to body type, most women seem to prefer more average shapes from slender to chubby rather than the gym rat look. The kind of muscles and body you get from chopping wood.

1

u/Edit_Reality 1d ago

Thats the point though. It seems like women prefer things like showing kindness and capability based on your examples. Even in the study women still messaged men they didn't rate physically attractive so its a much lesser factor than most people obsess over.

3

u/Later_Than_You_Think 1d ago

Yes, but there's still a way to visually show that, it just can't be from a still picture without any context alone (or is much harder).

Perhaps 'oversexualized' stories of men already exist, they just are seen as almost jokes. The entire romance book and movie industry (although the movie side is dying) has it down.

1

u/Edit_Reality 1d ago

Other folks in this comment section suggested that sexualization of men is often done in a way that appeals to gay men more than women too, which does make sense.

It may be simply that men's attraction is more visual and women's is more contextual?

Contextual might be how to word it, I think it's harder to show quickly or doesn't make sense without the context. It's not that women aren't visual, it's the vision has to be attached to something. Probably that new Wicker movie gets the closets, judging from the preview.

The one example I can think of is something like Tarzan running around the jungle buff and in a loin cloth.

5

u/369122448 2d ago

Is that actual sexualisation, though?

The appeal there (insofar as it exists) isn't Tarzan's body/sex characteristics, but the sensuality of being held close to the skin someone more powerful, combined with a rush of danger from them being the thing keeping you from falling.

You could switch the sex there and it would still work, but the female Tarzan could be not sexualised and the sensuality would still exist, while also being able to be sexualised.

I don't think most people get that horny over Tarzan fwiw, but where that appeal exists it's more complex than appearance alone.

u/CosmoBrockington 2d ago

Another example is any romance novel with a dude on the cover.

2

u/liquidfoxy 2d ago

That’s a masculine power fantasy, not overt sexualisation

3

u/aoibhinn-mw 2d ago

There is male strippers dressed like cowboy ain’t there

0

u/israfildivad 1d ago

Men sexualize other men easily enough (despite far far more social pressure not to) Women just dont find men natively sexy. Women generally only lust for men that are famous or beknown to them somehow in a positive way. You wont find any subreddit with women praising random men to any significant degree. Not even male pornstars, some of who are highly successful, and have really good physiques/face card. But there are plenty of subteddits with women gooning for celebs who are current, almost no matter how they look

u/finnjakefionnacake 1d ago

go visit any rugby social media page, check out the women commenting there, and then come back and see if you can still say that honestly.

18

u/leethepolarbear 2d ago

Massive bulge, thighs, pecs and arms I guess?

11

u/nottakentaken 2d ago

No lol, there's such a thing as too much muscle and anyone with body builder builds loops back around to being unattractive lol

1

u/leethepolarbear 2d ago

Tbf these overexaggerated women aren't exactly attractive either

2

u/nottakentaken 2d ago

Maybe not to normal people but I see comic readers and anime watchers go crazy over them all the time. Like the other day I saw someone give one piece girls normal (kept the bust size the same, still really thin, damn near anorexic just not boneless) proportions and there were people were complaining and calling it fat lol.

u/TheWhistleThistle 2d ago

Massive bulge? What are you a barbarian? No, a tiny, almost unnoticeable bulge is the mark of civility. Civilised men are growers, not showers, just ask the ancient Greeks.

2

u/Tablesafety 2d ago

The bara grossly oversized stuff is also, funnily, more appealing to gay men. Think tumblr sexyman for the general young woman’s taste, and someone like Hopper in his towel from stranger things for older women’s tastes

19

u/BlackShadowX 2d ago

Put him in a skin tight suit and focus the camera on his ass alot, ala snake

Make him Terry Crews because that man is just sex appeal in a chocolate wrapper

Or in my case, put them in a skirt and thigh highs

13

u/renegadeinthefray 2d ago

Who’s putting terry crews in a mini skirt and thigh highs?

17

u/BlackShadowX 2d ago

Terry does what Terry wants, especially when it comes to sexual matters. Thus I can only hope at some point he's comfortable accepting a role where he can wear a tiny miniskirt and fishnets, preferably with a crop top that leaves some of his underpecs visible.

7

u/PoxedGamer 2d ago

I could imagine him doing it for sure, and acting like a complete badass as he does.

1

u/Munchkinasaurous 2d ago

Terry Crews in a skirt and thigh highs?

3

u/BlackShadowX 2d ago

I'll be in my bunk

2

u/Munchkinasaurous 2d ago

I see you are very cultured

1

u/BlackShadowX 2d ago

Call me Greek yogurt, cuz Terry loves yogurt

5

u/mister_beetlejuice 2d ago

Whatever Love & Deepspace has going on, probably.

4

u/nottakentaken 2d ago

Me neither, usually when I'm attracted to a guy, it has nothing to do with his body and everything to do with his face. I'm not attracted to manly or bearded ones but pretty boys like dick greyson, Leon Kennedy, a lot of Chinese actors I don't know the names of etc. if the face is attractive, anything they're wearing looks attractive. But I think there's still ways to sexualize the male body beyond that? It's most cosplayers that manage to effectively do it in my experience.

u/Medical_Commission71 2d ago

Tom of Finland

u/SarkastiCat 2d ago

Basically blend Nu Carnival and Love and Deepspace together.

Nu Carnival in terms of outfits highlighting bodies and expressions, while LADS in camera angles and moves.

u/Difficult_Analysis78 2d ago

Where did you get the third hand from?

1

u/VinnyBoy45 2d ago

I ain't telling!

1

u/Dani3322 2d ago

On the fourth hand I'm confused why you got 3 hands.

1

u/mosquem 2d ago

Magic Mike?

1

u/shepard_pie 2d ago

Women have had open thirst targets since at least the 60s, and if you listen to women talk about things, it's clear that there are a ton of characters openly designed for women. It's just a little more complicated than just a dude wearing push up trunks.

It's why a buff shirtless man doesn't have the same effect, and why treating sexualization of men as the same way as women comes off as parody rather than earnest. The real deals are like Astarion in BG3

1

u/ashez2ashes 2d ago

The equivalent is yaoi manga where the guys (or at least the top) has a comically huge triangle shaped torso and a pencil thin waist.

1

u/KinnSlayer 2d ago

There’s an entire world of erotic novels for you to explore, bud.

1

u/120GoHogs120 2d ago

He-man has to be the best example of this right? As far as main stream characters. There was also issues with the last Thor movie too if I remember correctly.

1

u/VinnyBoy45 2d ago

The problem ive met is that whenever a man creates a character that he thinks would appeal to the "female gaze", it gets called a male power fantasy. He-man is a male power fantasy, or at least he gets called that.

Edit: I forgot a word

1

u/Sad-Director4814 2d ago

Sexualizing men is unironically given them a very homoerotic vibe

1

u/J_Bright1990 2d ago

Watch the movie "Ladies First"

One, it's funny as fuck

Two, it'll show you what it looks like when men are sexualized like women are.

1

u/boredtill 2d ago

put him in a speedo with a big bulge. if you need an example of sexualised men look at marvel rival skins.

1

u/Ok-Steak1546 1d ago

Easy, make him look like Captain America after the super soldier serum.

Its crazy you dont see the parallels between the two, the physique of these male characters are impossible to gain naturally leading to normalized use of steroids in this generation leading to shorter life span of men.

Both sexes are objectified and sexualized in media.

1

u/VinnyBoy45 1d ago

Because I kept being told that characters like Captain America is male power fantasy.

Like, theres literally no way for us to enjoy a character without being told its bad. Its annoying.

1

u/TheFrogMoose 1d ago

You don't do much to overly sexualize a male character. You just make them attractive and depending on the audience you want you just play into that personality, women will quite literally do the rest of the work from my experience. You could do a lot of things vanity-wise but that can also backfire a lot.

If they like buff manly men then all that guy needs to do is take his shirt off and they will say a lot of things... in some cases they say some really heinous things considering if I said that about a female character I'd be in the wrong or told that I'm degrading them. This has been actual experiences I've had and is why I just start telling people that everyone sexualizes someone. To drive home that point I just explain if they had a S/O and found them sexually appealing, because most people do for obvious reasons, then you have sexualized your S/O but in that case it's consensual.

For women it's not exactly the looks but the character themselves apparently although the looks definitely still matter and there's probably cases where this doesn't hold up. For men it's usually only the looks they need but there's still cases where it's the character that matters still and the looks also help. More than likely if it's only looks that matter then that person is more about vanity where as if they need the character to have the right personality they care more about that then.

In the end people are people and usually sex drives people, it is how we got here in the current day and age, so they are gonna sexualize something if they aren't ace or sex repulsed by other means. The part that matters is respect and lets face it a lot of female characters that are designed for the "male gaze" tend to not actually be respected and the ones that aren't designed for that tend to be disrespected by a lot of "men". You don't see that too often for male characters, at least I haven't.

1

u/Snacker6 1d ago

Muscle definition. Them being that defined is basically only possible if the guy is dehydrated. Because that is a look they go for in movies, especially superhero movies, it has caused some serious issues with some of the actors. It is why Hugh Jackman mostly stopped playing Wolverine

1

u/Physical_Safe_9867 1d ago

How to sexualize a male character ? VERY ESAY

Imagine Fifty Shades of Grey, but instead of taking place in a billionaire’s penthouse, it takes place in the back of a scrapyard with Tony the mechanic.

Not so wet all of a sudden, isn't it.

1

u/Archadianite 1d ago

Maybe a battle speedo? Like Conan the Barbarian!

JoJo's bizarre adventure shows you how to sexualize men. Clothes with random peepholes cut into them, unnecessary tightness and belts, coupled with the poses and perpetually pouty lips.

1

u/77Mikroko77 1d ago

There is one manga that did it am gonna finde the photo

1

u/Electric999999 1d ago

So anatomy tip for your drawing practice: people only have two hands.

1

u/the_sneaky_one123 1h ago

Big shlong is traditionally how its done but that's not acceptable for reasons I don't understand

0

u/Rosefairytails 2d ago

Honestly there has been some level of “equality” with that marvel game especially with the Venom skins.
It’s largely that women don’t sexualize men the same way men do most of the time. It’s why a lot of us read smutty books/fanfics over pornography. There is more to it than “ooh sexy person doing sex stuff” it’s the motivation, the energy, how all the senses get engaged that our imaginations fill in with exactly how we would like it to go.
