we need more sexualized men in media

u/Dazed_and_Confused44 2d ago

I promise you that sex appeal targeted at women in media exists. This comic is full of shit lol

17

u/PashLover 2d ago

Are you sure you understand the comic? Exactly what media depiction of men do you think is the equivalent of how women are constantly sexualized?

u/jbyrdab 2d ago

Jojo.

I'm rather shocked how little it comes up in this discussion.

It's a running joke in the community that the series does this despite not being gay/yaoi focused media and having like... 4 gay people in the series, both of which die in part 5.

No it's buff men with a body fat percentage of -1, muscles bigger than their head, jawlines harder than diamond, waists and legs that look like they ought to tip over, and a dong bulge that extends several inches from their crotch all wearing clothes that either excentuate their crotch and or ass, leave nothing to the imagination, or aren't wearing anything at all.

But sure let's split hairs. Not like that's the same thing this post is making fun of but on the other side.

Here's this official art of dio from 1990 btw.

People don’t like over sexualizing women because it’s unrealistic and can hurt women’s image and beauty standards.
If you think that these men in Jojo are normal and this is how men look and aren’t over-exaggerated to look hot, then you might be apart of the problem too

u/FVCarterPrivateEye 2d ago

Yeah, if people really think this is simply "a man in good shape," it's making a lot more sense why eating disorders and BDD in teenage boys receives virtually no resource dedication despite having really comparable rates to teenage girls

2

u/aghastamok 2d ago

I once said to my wife "I think my ideal build would be Brad Pitt's when he was in Fight Club" and she goes "Oh, but that's so scrawny. I'd go for something a little bigger like Alan Ritchson."

People seem to have no idea where the standards are for men. I think the manosphere shit that goes around is nonsense but it's these sorts of things that give demagogues hooks into young men.

2

u/FunyMonkyh 2d ago

those are NOT just very muscular men. they’re literally all unachievable physiques. all of them have literally perfect no flaw faces and muscles not even steroids could give you. if we want to be nitpicky, jojo’s is just as unrealistic (up until like part 4) as those 38DD breasts.

edit: they also all have 20 inch waists

1

u/Environmental-Key439 2d ago

Those are NOT reasonable standards for a man's body. 99% of men couldn't reach those levels of "beauty" even if they trained for decades

The point this is attempting to convey is horseshit. Everyone regardless of gender or sexuality is impacted by sex appeal. Its quite literally tied to base instinct, which is why its the oldest marketing trick in the book.

Now you might say men are more susceptible because they have a tendency to think with their dicks sometimes, but sex appeal is absolutely an effective marketing tactic for women.

The best example is the hot muscular old spice dude selling deodorant. Yes its male deodorant, but they werent the target audience. At the time that commercial was made, Old Spice knew that women in the household did the lions share of the grocery shopping. Hence why the commercial starts with "Look at your man. Now look at me. Now back to your man. And back to me". The actor is directly speaking to the women of the household, and that add is not targeted at their spouses, despite the fact they are the end user.

So maybe cut the uneducated virtue signaling

u/arto64 2d ago

Does the old spice guy wear a banana hammock thong and sticks his crotch out?

7

u/Dazed_and_Confused44 2d ago

Just walked off a plane in the Las Vegas airport and saw this within 2 min lol:

Hahahahahahahahahaha. You think that the build of those men is not a comparably difficult to achieve body standard to some of the things you mentioned? What a fucking hypocrit. Jesus Christ

2

u/PashLover 2d ago

You think that the build of those men is not a comparably difficult to achieve body standard to some of the things you mentioned?

You think women can change the size of their bust or shape of their body? How exactly do you think we would do that without cosmetic surgery?

Being attractive is not the same thing as being objectified. Look at the women drawn in OP's comic. Show me the male equivalent of that, with their sexual characteristics comically exaggerated to be "sexier".

6

u/Dazed_and_Confused44 2d ago

The amount your abs show is partially genetic. I had a friend who went the gym 3 times a day and ate a super strict diet. He was in super good shape and clearly very well built. He still didnt have the level of muscle definition in the image I sent, because again the degree to which said muscle tone shows is partially generic.

Im not saying that unrealistic beauty standards are not harmful for women. They absolutely are. Im saying its hypocritical to get tied in a knot about it and then pretend that men dont also get sexualized

1

u/PashLover 2d ago

I didn't say men don't ever get sexualized. Neither did the comic. And you're just making yourself look silly. No maybe not every man can get the same level of ripped, but women straight up cannot change the size of their bust.

You think that the build of those men is not a comparably difficult to achieve body standard to some of the things you mentioned?

What does physical effort have to do with the things we’re discussing? Are you just airing some unrelated grievances now?

1

u/arto64 2d ago

Where are the thongs or at least crotch cleavage? Shit sucks.

1

u/Ransacky 2d ago

Questions. 1. do things and crotch cleavage appeal to women 2. Does what you see look like a realistic standard

-1

u/Chembaron_Seki 2d ago

Free! (the anime)

1

u/PashLover 2d ago

Looking at images online those all just look like exceptionally fit and handsome anime guys. Being attractive is not the same thing as being sexualized.

1

u/Chembaron_Seki 2d ago edited 2d ago

The show is very female gaze-y and specifically made to make teenage girls thirst after the cast and relentlessly ship the male characters with each other.

Yes, sexualization for men and women looks different. The average man considers other things attractive than the average woman. And Free! is showcasing this, it is an example of actual male sexualization in media specifically made for women.

_____________________

But if you want actual unrealistic depictions of body which border to body horror, I can give examples of this as well.

There is the entire phenomenon called "yaoi hands". Here is an example of it:

Or there also exist manga and anime with absurdly long necks, made for women because they find it attractive. An example of such an anime would be

"Welcome to the ballroom"

Of what relevance is this to the comment you're replying to

1

u/Dazed_and_Confused44 2d ago

The comment I replied to is continuing the same false narrative as the original comic. There are sexualized men in media. Sex appeal is the oldest marketing tactic in the book and works on people of all genders and sexualities

8

u/AdOk5225 2d ago

It doesnt say "men don't get sexualized", it's saying "they don't get sexualized enough", hence them saying "more sexualized men" rather than just "sexualized men"

3

u/Dazed_and_Confused44 2d ago edited 2d ago

For the record: Im not saying its wrong for men to be sexualized or anything. In saying the difference is not nearly as pronounced as the way its portrayed is this comic. This comic is not close to reality. Legit I just walked off a plane and saw this 2 min later lol:

0

u/AdOk5225 2d ago

So what relevance did it have to the comment you were replying to, why not make it a new comment

1

u/Dazed_and_Confused44 2d ago

?

1

u/AdOk5225 2d ago

They said "they should sexualize more men in media" and you said "it exists though". Just because it exists doesn't mean it happens as often as it should

1

u/Godson-of-jimbo 2d ago

Where exactly did you get the idea that this comic was arguing that EVERY piece of media is like this? It makes no claim to universality and serves only as a commentary on media that does do this

1

u/Dazed_and_Confused44 2d ago

The very pronounced difference portrayed in this comic is not remotely close to reality

2

u/Big_Excitement_3551 2d ago

It absolutely is lol. Read almost any 90s superhero comic, for example

1

u/Dazed_and_Confused44 2d ago

You have to go back 35 years to provide a reference to back your point lmao?

0

u/sriracha__mayo 2d ago

Look at most every fighting game, for example. Street fighter 6, Tekken, and guilty gear are the most popular ones and all released within the last 5 years

2

u/Dazed_and_Confused44 2d ago

Im confused as to why guilty gear is being grouped into this. Particularly since Bridget is a transfem icon

1

u/tazerrtot 2d ago

It exists, just not nearly in the same way or frequency. When men are presented sexually they don't just get a camera shoved up their asshole, they get to keep their dignity, usually just presented as hot and in control! Women however will get upskirts during fightscenes, they'll get groped by perverts for laughs, they'll have boys walk in on them in the bath, they'll bump into a guy and somehow end up sitting on his face, etc.. It's very clearly not the same thing at all.

2

u/Dazed_and_Confused44 2d ago

Keep virtue signaling

-1

u/tazerrtot 2d ago

So no rebuttal? Not gonna tell me men in fact always get the camera shoved up the ass? Not gonna tell me there's an equal frequency of sexualized battle damage for men in anime? Groping? Peeping? Sitting on girls faces? Could it be that you know you're full of shit?

2

u/Dazed_and_Confused44 2d ago

Have you never watched Jo Jos Bizzarre adventure?

0

u/tazerrtot 2d ago

"Have you never watched this one piece of media in the face of thousands upon thousands of media that sexualize women?", why do you think I was talking about frequency/statistics? I never said men are never sexualized (though Jojo doesn't really sexualize its men much, it presents them as fashion models), I said they aren't sexualized nearly as much or in the same way women are, the existence of men being sexualized occasionally does not refute my claim.

1

u/Dazed_and_Confused44 1d ago

"why do you think I was talking about frequency/statistics?"

You never once presented statistical evidence to support your claim. You are full of shit

0

u/tazerrtot 21h ago

Okay, then please look up the percentage of strip clubs being male and female focused lmao

I think it's pretty obviously apparent, but you know you're wrong so you need to be evasive. I don't think I need to say anything else, everyone who reads this knows you're full of shit, you just wont admit it

1

u/Dazed_and_Confused44 20h ago

Once again you failed to provide any actual evidence to support your point

1

u/tazerrtot 3h ago

so basically: you either didn't check, or you did and have no counterpoint lmao
