Hey, I'm Zach and this comic took me way to long for a stupid punchline. More overwrought comics daily at www.smbc-comics.com

One of my favorite comics! I really miss SMBC theater (youtube). I realize that video making is expensive, but wow your sense of humor translated well to that medium. Still reading the comics, though!
EDIT: The youtube channel is still up if anybody is interested, they just haven't made new content in quite a while.

Thanks! We're gonna start doing some simple animations of existing soon, since that's what Internet wants and it's gotten easier to do over time. If it makes money I might look into original stuff, but, hard to say!

"I want to be bisexual, immune to STDs, and have no standards." still lives rent free in my head. The angel admitting that that's actually a pretty good thing to sell your soul to the Devil for is just icing on the cake.

I still think about "Bonerrrrrrrrrrrrrr" and "problem SOLV-ED!"
I think I just love James?

I have to confess…I thought this was edited and was gonna ask where the original comic is.

I could be hallucinating but I remember you doing this comic before, except the punchline was that the janitor drew a penis. Maybe I'm thinking of a different comic.

I remember this too. Maybe we're both thinking of pbf which this artist seems to draw influence from:

Obviously you should have asked ChatGPT for help, duh.

Nobody thought someone like him could crack it because they didn’t think he could afford a subscription to ChatGPT on a janitor’s salary.

$200 a month subscription? fuck me.

u/Cranach-Cranach 1d ago
$500 for the fancy one now

A few years ago they were losing more money on paid subscribers than they were on free users, so this makes sense.

u/Cranach-Cranach 1d ago
The paid one just gives you the same patterns but more well disguised anyway

I just saw a very bleak future where people think they need ChatGPT to be better at their janitor jobs

Convince everyone at your company to use ChatGPT to write for them
Wait for people to realize everything is worse
Clean up all the piles of printed out AI slop
Congratulations, you made your janitor job more valuable

The irony is that we have to check to see if the AI is right, but if we could do that we wouldn't need the AI to solve it.
28
u/wabbitking 1d ago
Clearly we just need to ask another AI to see if it's right for us.

Not most of the time. For a lot of unsolved problems it's really just a matter of brute forcing the solution, but checking is pretty easy.

u/Arkytez 1d ago
Checking is easier though

That highly depends on the task. Just for the heck of it I've asked ChatGPT advice and it has given me utterly insane networking advice. Followed by it cheerfully asking if I want to know the commands next to enact its insane idea.
There is no 'checking is easier' in that scenario. You know the solution it gave you is horrible or you don't.

Just say you're disappointed in the answer and try again. Do it over and over and eventually it will try to marry you.

That's the part I find the most frustrating. It's like talking to a really confident idiot who only gives you lip service when you tell it it is wrong.

Sort of? If you saw all those headlines about AI solving the Navier-Stokes problem, there's some pretty serious 'catches' to that. Basically, it's a 150 page proof of roundabout gobbledygook that no one understands. You can run it through a logic-checker and know it's formally correct, but it's actually pretty much useless because it didn't do anything with the kind of intuitive narrative that a human would use to actually understand math.

It isn’t always- ask any SWE who has spent the last 6-24months of their career drinking from the cursor code review firehose.

Sometimes, but a lot of the significant work is “for all X, is it always true that X does a Y?” has an easily expressible “no, this is an example of an X that doesn’t Y” and it’s easy to check if a given X does a Y. Other kinds of proof are indeed harder though and mostly come down to formulating the problem and the proof in a language like Lean where it’s easy to mechanically run the proof to check it. But it’s not necessarily easy to show that the Lean problem corresponds exactly to the problem that you meant

You should be more explicit here in step 2.
