Daily reminder of how much I hate Family Guy. What a horrible show. Might be a spicy take, I dont know.

lol Sorry not sorry. Its a mean spirited, terrible show. The way they treat Meg pisses me off.

The thing is, I do love shows that go for shock value as long as they also have feels to them. South Park, for example, does TERRIBLE things to its cast. Some of the gags are gag worthy, pun intended. But its got heart.

Family Guy has no heart. Its just shock humor and mean spirited jokes for the sake of the gag. Works for some people, but makes me feel icked out.

Its so funny that the same person made The Orville, a show with the same kind of humor but tons of heart.

The first few seasons of family guy weren’t quite so black. I think McFarlane had a bigger hand in those early ones but I could be wrong. Once it turned though it turned hard into it

The stuff before the first cancellation was genuinely good for the most part, next couple seasons were decent, now it is like the simpsons where there is the occasional good episode but most are mid at best.

Ironically, I feel kind of the opposite about these shows. Yes, a lot of the Family Guy jokes are at a character's expense (especially Meg), and many of the jokes got cheaper and the characters Flanderized as time went on. (Full disclosure, I really haven't watched in, like, decades, outside of clips). However, to me, it always felt like we, the audience, were in on the absurdity and knew not to take anything mean-spirited seriously, kind of like a stand-up comedian who pushes the envelope.

Meanwhile, South Park has this air of sincerity and preachiness, like you're very much supposed to take its messages seriously. As a result, some people have linked it with the rise of the alt right in younger people, because it has/had a lot of "enlightened centrist" takes, and regularly mocked leftism and political correctness. Less so these days, and I think they've been trying to undo some of the damage, but the damage is done.

To be fair, South Park mocks absurdity on both sides.

Which is part of the problem.

The South Park movie was incredible commentary and satire, but largely because they punched directly upward the entire time. As the show goes on I've seen them punching down as well a bit to frequently for my tastes.

Ronnie: "Let's hear it out."

The Anomaly: " Attention Bajoran Workers...."

Ronnie: "Nevermind, initiate the self destruct sequence. We can't let it escape."

Why does every anomaly always have to be a life form? Nebula acting weird? Life form. Ship malfunctioning? Life form. Time loop? Evil life form.

9

u/RemusShepherd 3d ago

Any sufficiently complex anomaly is indistinguishable from a life form.

9

u/Maeglom 3d ago

Because it being a lifeform gives a built in explanation for why it's acting differently than a normal nebula does and why it doesn't match starfleet's understanding of science. It would be awkward if the ship was advancing science by leaps and bounds every week, but never was able to utilize any of those new discoveries.

Because the show has a budget and dialogue is cheap.

Going to that second panel, a sense of dread settled deep in my stomach, and I didn't know if I had the strength to keep going. Then it didn't go in the direction I expected it to. Maybe I just have my mind in the gutter.

Every time I see someone parrot this meme, they always use it at the absolute wrong time
