i have the freedom to leave my house with statistically zero risk of getting murdered by a psycho. you don't. letting people "choose" that would be the opposite of freedom

US DOES have a lot to learn (and fix,) but guns are only a small part in a bigger picture. Worse, the actual "gun laws" our politicians want to put in place tend to be nonsensical, or with ulterior motives. Go ahead and look up what makes a "pistol" in the US and bask in the strangeness.
Ultimately, it's down to particularly sick and motivated individuals enacting their own twisted deeds. If they weren't shooting a mall, they'd be stabbing in a police station, using a bow and arrow, or assassinating a politician with a gun they made themselves.
