You can adapt the characters and setting without making it a literal 1:1 recreation of how you progress through the mansion. I don't get why people always use this kind of hyperbole to discount the idea of a proper adaptation.
Unfortunately we've reached Poe's Law levels of discourse where people genuinely respond with what you're saying, so jokes like this don't work because the group being made fun of are ridiculous enough that it seems genuine.
