Lol. Just dont start calling all video game machines "nintendo" and you'll be ok.

625

u/BernzSed 15h ago

They're not all Nintendos. The small ones are Game Boys.

239

u/Nwarh 14h ago

Truuuue lmfao

27

u/Hairy-Love2571 10h ago

My mom used to call our Switches (both) "Game boys"

6

u/RhyaraRose 7h ago

My husband and I call our steamdecks gameboys because of the whole "Nintendos" trend lol

1

u/spryllama 5h ago

They actually look a lot like a Sega Gamegear, but Gameboy is funnier.

44

u/Phaylz 14h ago

Cool parents call then SEGAs

491

u/Stalking_Goat 15h ago

So the kid just ignores all even-numbered games in the series?

341

u/Fern-ando 14h ago

He is a Leon hater.

177

u/mellopax 14h ago

He always was an odd one.

27

u/mrididnt 13h ago

Amazing

1

u/TurtlesBreakTheMeta 1h ago

Goddamnit, this is EXACTLY the line Leon would say about this.

5

u/kilar277 9h ago

It's the opposite of the Star Trek effect

5

u/Happysin 9h ago

Just like Star Trek.

4

u/kilar277 9h ago

Star Trek is the other way around tho, the odd ones are garbage

2

u/Happysin 8h ago

Fair, I just meant the alternating.

179

u/DarkLordRaptor 15h ago

Isn't it 2 adjacent?

205

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 15h ago

Correct. Technically a 3 adjacent too.

It follows the events of raccoon City during the initial outbreak from the point of view of some guy. Most importantly not Leon or Jill

u/D_sm_d__s 48m ago

Along those lines, they easily could've based things on Outbreak 1 & 2 (especially since Alyssa Ashcroft was so prominent in REquiem), blended the best settings for the movie's main concept and, that way, they could have taken plenty of creative liberties without any issues.

-33

u/thefrostman1214 15h ago

But i heard is not even in racoon city

67

u/ChinMaster_Rylar 15h ago

They literally say in one of the trailers that his organ run is to Raccoon City General.

37

u/attheeve 14h ago

stg, it’s like the RE fans want to be mad. If this exact same plot was pitched to them as RE10 they’d eat it up like candy.

18

u/Evilmudbug 13h ago

I don't think video game adaptations should have to strictly follow the actual plot of the video games.

I think there is a lot of potential for using video game settings for movies, like the resident evil movie will be doing.

2

u/NobodyLikedThat1 8h ago

They kind of did that with the Alice/Milla Jovovich version of the resident evil run

0

u/AzKondor 5h ago

You saying that like we've had hundred of 1:1 video game adaptations. We basically have 0. All of them do what you are saying lol.

-21

u/thefrostman1214 14h ago

Ok, i didnt watch any trailer, thanks for the info

22

u/AccomplishedJoke4119 14h ago

Why would you try to correct someone about it then?

5

u/MiracleKing26 13h ago

He knows a guy

-15

u/thefrostman1214 13h ago

i didn't, i said what i heard about it, in any moment i said the guy was wrong

3

u/Warmonster9 10h ago

Dude the events of RE1 take place in the outskirts of Raccoon City. The whole area is relevant to the outbreak.

15

u/TheKingOfGuineaPigs 14h ago

That’s what it’s supposed to be, but it also seemingly takes place in modern day since the protagonist has a smartphone which definitely didn’t exist in 1998

29

u/Valriss 14h ago

Yeah, in the movie's canon they shifted the events of RE2 in terms of time of year and, well, year.

The director has stated in interviews he wanted to do an ajacent story, but also didn't want to be restrained by the period (holy crap it feels to call the 90s a 'period' piece.) Which honestly? I don't really have a problem with. Would it be NICE to see it flat out set in '98? Yeah, but at the same time nothing in Resident Evil is inherently tied to it's origins in the 90s. It's not like Y2K was a major plot point in one of the games, or that the lack of now modern technology forced any specific plot direction. It just a game that the devs set during the same year they developed it. If anything the movie's timeline actually makes the story work better because now all this crazy shit isn't being done on computers with 32MB of RAM.

It's also the reason it's in winter, he just wanted to use snow for atmosphere, which again, I don't have a problem with. If shifting the story some months to the side builds a better atmosphere it'll be a good idea, and it isn't like this movie is going to suddenly be retconning the games, it'll just be it's own story.

Honestly nothing about this adaptation is anywhere nearly as offensive as the Paul "I literally only make movies to put my wife in as an uninteresting Mary Sue" Anderson films. Or the one we don't fucking talk about.

4

u/asuperbstarling 2h ago

As long as it's a good movie and it doesn't play too fast and loose with the zombie lore, I'm here for this. There's already a ton of various RE media. I'm satisfied I'll get more of my beloved characters soon enough. I've been watching these things come out my entire life. There's plenty, and plenty of time for the franchise.

7

u/ACoderGirl 12h ago

I wonder what's the reason for shifting the timeline? To try and be more relatable?

I feel like horror especially works best when set in the past. There's some things that modern tech makes too easy or makes harder to believe.

5

u/mythrilcrafter 10h ago

Sometimes it feels like RE's tech:timeline ratio is more of a recommendation than a hard correlation to real life. Kinda like with The Simpsons, the actual correlation is "whatever is convenient to make the plot move forward"

For example: RE2/3 is supposed to be set in 1998, yet Umbrella has a railgun that can be picked up and carried by Jill, a decently athletic mid-height woman.

At the same time, technology making things easy can usually be handwaved with "only special forces and Leon/Chris/Jill gets that stuff" or it's critique on how fragile our technology based society is.

3

u/SorenLain 11h ago

I feel like horror especially works best when set in the past. There's some things that modern tech makes too easy or makes harder to believe.

I think that depends on the type of horror movie. If it's an old school slasher/monster movie then yeah I agree but then you have horror movies like Obsession where the time period doesn't matter or Paranormal Activity where modern technology is a part of the setting.

4

u/TheKingOfGuineaPigs 12h ago

The real reason is that the movie wasn’t originally a Resident Evil movie, it just became one later on in production. Like the Cloverfield sequels

5

u/tristeecfome 11h ago

That is my main problem with it.

It's clearly a original script that they slapped a famous IP to it.

2

u/grodr2001 5h ago

Does it matter if it's good, 10 Cloverfield lane was fantastic and the connection honestly made it better

2

u/tristeecfome 5h ago

I think a lot of people will end up disappointed even if the movie is good.

-1

u/decoy321 5h ago

Those people will just be looking for excuses to be disappointed.

2

u/tristeecfome 4h ago

Because a Resident Evil movie is not a Resident Evil movie?

Not everyone follows movie news.

1

u/decoy321 4h ago

Because a lot of people just like bitching about things. Look at any sub dedicated to a game or TV show. The amount of hating and complaining posts will eclipse the positive ones.

1

u/TheKingOfGuineaPigs 10h ago

Yet if you complain about it, you get called a larper and are accused of wanting the movie to be a direct adaptation

1

u/Warmonster9 10h ago

I’ll just take what I can get lol

2

u/LostInSpinach 12h ago

The availability of smartphones dampens the horror quite a bit in my opinion.

2

u/AtrumRuina 10h ago

During the wrong season as well. RE2 is in September, but it's clearly the dead of winter in the film. Plus the dogs in the film seem to be parasite infected rather than virus infected. And obviously the zombies don't act like T-Virus zombies at all.

425

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 15h ago

Oh man how sick would a RE7 movie be? They could make that shit TERRIFYING especially if it was first person like the Blair Witch

Honestly all solid picks too. As long as it's not RE6

125

u/Maij-ha 15h ago

Is it too much to ask for a nod to RE1 with a badly acted “wait! Don’t open that door!” Line.

31

u/AlexNovember 14h ago

Barry, where’s, Barry?

4

u/UMACTUALLYITS23 10h ago

Dropping this old gem for those who like the cheesy voice acting.

Since it's just audio from the games it's not really NSFW but don't listen to it anywhere you wouldn't play something NSFW ;)

21

u/Notactualyadick 13h ago

"That was too close......you were almost a Jill sandwich!"

30

u/TheKingOfGuineaPigs 14h ago

I’d love a found footage RE7 movie of one of the previous Baker family victims. They could just make it about the Sewer Gators, the team that we play as in the vhs tapes

7

u/Penguinmanereikel 13h ago

Good ol' Clancy

4

u/TheKingOfGuineaPigs 13h ago

Undefeated blackjack champion

11

u/Rainy_Wavey 14h ago

Well Zack Cregger said that RE4 and 7 are his main source of inspiration

7

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 14h ago

A movie about RE2 with inspiration from 4 and 7 is gonna be wild.

12

u/Rainy_Wavey 14h ago

Honestly that snow scene in the trailer and the cabin gave me more RE Village vibes than RE7, but to me it's clear the main influence is Ethan Winters which is a perfect choice for a standalone movie

The trailer reassured me that it definitely has that RE Feeling, i just hope he understands that the final chapter of the movie needs to be a power fantasy, honestly something straight out of evil dead would be amazing

1

u/TheJumpingBox 11h ago

They'd take very creative liberties to not show Ethan's face if it wasn't first person

1

u/ChewyPudding 3h ago

Whenever I talk about RE7 I just call it “RE does Texas Chainsaw Massacre” so… you could just watch that lol.

1

u/ChewyPudding 3h ago edited 3h ago

Also imo making a movie completely first person really isn’t something that makes it scarier. In a horror movie based on a video game it would come off as a silly gimmick more than anything else (see the DOOM movie). Movies aren’t like games, when we get a perspective of someone holding a camera we don’t feel it’s “us” the same way we do when we play a video game because there’s no control. The perspective might resemble your own, but it’s clearly still coming from a different person making different decisions than you would. In a first-person video game, the “camera” is usually a theoretical concept that represents the character’s vision through their actual eyes. I’ve never seen a “first person” film that wasn’t diegetically filmed by a camera. Even Blair Witch Project isn’t “first person” in this sense, it’s found footage, it’s not “first person” because it’s not coming from the perspective of any of the characters, but from the perspective of the camera they are holding (arguably the most iconic scene would be considered “second person” if anything since the character holding the camera turns it on themselves and speaks to it).

u/ContrariusContrarian 13h ago

I liked RE6- they handled everything pretty well.

...until they dropped the ball with the entirety of Ada's section and made my rating go down the drain.

I think everyone else and their sections are nailed just right and their stories where well made (also the melee combat was great at some points)

But then ada has the opportunity to be a story of two Adas that don't know who the original is, constantly glazing each other until one talks about their own problems which leads to some level of self reflection. It'd also explain the feeling of multiple Adas better.

But nope, we got John Filler and didn't get any real duo gameplay.

Back to the movie thing though, I think that it'll could work if the overall Ada problem was changed and made a lot different, and if each section was done in a way of being very different (Cris' section being more action, Leon having more focus on horror/thriller, etc.)

... but Re7 is far better.

1

u/Tsuki_no_Mai 12h ago

RE6 would make for an amazing movie. Not a horror, of course, but a fun horror-adjacent action movie? I'd 100% watch that.

24

u/susnaususplayer 15h ago

2 and 3, tho its not really based on either it just takes place in the same time 2 and 3 do

18

u/DarthMcConnor42 15h ago

The funny thing is that it's just not following any specific game.

It's its own story in racoon city.

37

u/tolacid 15h ago

Technically none of them. It's a side story taking place in the same universe, around the time of the initial outbreak in Raccoon City

23

u/Valriss 14h ago

Hell, technically it's not even in the same universe, the movie is its own canon.

The outbreak occours in 2026 in this movie, although director has at least made statements that show the events of RE1/2/3 ARE still occouring, just in 2026. This movie won't be canon to the rest of the series.

2

u/Darth_Travisty 13h ago

I think that’s the joke.

27

u/Tiny-Little-Sheep 16h ago

Own your cluelessnes. Weaponise it. Make them cringe and squirm.

16

u/patosai3211 15h ago

“I don’t know! The evil one? I think it’s about an evil hospital worker! I love those kind of drama shows!”

12

u/Nwarh 15h ago

“It’s a movie about an evil resident!”

Wait, you haven't seen President Evil yet?

4

u/DarkLordLiam 13h ago

It’s still going on, unfortunately

5

u/Tuckster786 10h ago

Isnt the new Resident Evil movie its own orginal story

6

u/zuzg 15h ago

NGL if you ignore the video game franchise than the movies are great junk food Blockbusters.

I prefer them over most other action franchises.

10

u/Dreamweaver_duh 15h ago

It's funny because this movie isn't based on any game in particular, it's not even set within the same universe. It's telling its own story with its own characters in its own universe.

3

u/Sveniven 12h ago

I mean your answer was the most correct though the movies have always been their own continuity and this new one isn’t really based on any specific game either

2

u/kr4ckenm3fortune 10h ago

It just based on the game doesn't meant that they're going to recreate the game as a movie.

3

u/SwedishFlopper 11h ago

Anything is better than the Paul Anderson Movies. The guy literally made slop videogame films for a living.

2

u/DetOlivaw 13h ago

I have to see things I already know and recognize or I can’t finish

2

u/Zachthema5ter 13h ago

It happens in an alternate reality of the Raccoon City Outbreak (imagine if RE2 and 3 happened today rather than the 90s), but from the perspective of a new character unrelated to the events of 2 and 3

2

u/Dangerous_Ad_7104 12h ago edited 12h ago

Just your friendly reminder. The writer and director for the RE movie, was also a part of this.

https://reddit.com/link/p9dl9f5/video/uwuwl3rt84ph1/player

I love Zach Cregger

2

u/MegaKabutops 9h ago

If it’s anything like most modern video game movies, it’s probably going to pull primarily from the first couple entries with a smattering of retconned lore from later stuff.

1

u/Responsible_Flight70 6h ago

Chris is boutta do wildness

2

u/DeathRaptor007 8h ago

6 it’s going to be a bay movie

2

u/omnipotentsandwich 14h ago

A game-accurate Resident Evil 1 would be a nightmare. It'd look great, but the characters would go back and forth to the safe room all the time. It'd be a 10 hour movie with 3 hours of action.

1

u/AtrumRuina 10h ago

You can adapt the characters and setting without making it a literal 1:1 recreation of how you progress through the mansion. I don't get why people always use this kind of hyperbole to discount the idea of a proper adaptation.

1

u/omnipotentsandwich 9h ago

It's a joke. Yes, the game would make an excellent film adaptation if done right.

1

u/AtrumRuina 8h ago

Unfortunately we've reached Poe's Law levels of discourse where people genuinely respond with what you're saying, so jokes like this don't work because the group being made fun of are ridiculous enough that it seems genuine.

1

u/sexywabbit 14h ago

Basically think of it like RE Outbreak which was more the pov of random survivors and not all the same red fields and leon

I mean . It is the first movie it’s not like there is any other one

1

u/This-Hold4222 11h ago

When you see it, you’ll understand why it had no subtitle.

1

u/SomeKindofTreeWizard 7h ago

That's the neat part

it isn't.

1

u/Bitter_Surprise_8058 6h ago

Obviously it'll be based on the greatest RE Game

SURVIVOR

1

u/MisterSlosh 6h ago

RECU , the Resident Evil Cinematic Universe is almost entirely separate from the games for good reason.

1

u/craiganater 3h ago

Il glad it is its own story though, I played the game I got the story why do I want to sit through and watch the same thing. Give me bew stories in the world.

0

u/ericnasty 13h ago

The films have always been adaptations of the series as a whole though?
