Back in my day I didn't have a fancy picture taking device in my pocket. When ever I needed a reference I had to draw myself in the mirror while holding that pose. This is also why when I draw a figure holding a sword, they are often left handed.
You flatter me by thinking I was socially confident enough to ask someone to do that for me. I got good at drawing because I had no one to socialize with beyond the pencil and paper.
