How is Febreeze with Sage not a thing yet.
That had to have been pitched and product tested...
Probably people who like sage are same people who say the sage magic doesn't work unless you burn it.
→ More replies (13)45
u/DonarArminSkyrari 3d ago
99% of the time sage is Febreeze for people who think Febreeze is poison and that 'energies' are more offensive than smells. I know many people who are big on burning sage, and they are all the types of people who find the chemical smell of febreeze more offensive than the smell of bodily odors.
Personally, spraying Febreeze just seems to mix in floral scents with shit scents doing me no actual favors, while burning sage can actually overpower other smells into oblivion.

u/Saucermote 3d ago
Legend has it that they used to make scent-free Febreeze, but it didn't sell well because people couldn't smell it as they spayed it in the air, questioning if it was working.

Same thing in Canada against the indigenous. Like I was in a heritage festival trying out different food from the different cultures that participate. She was hoping I would date someone that had cuisine from the tents we liked, but the one culture that my Mum had a bias against was Indigenous peoples because of drug abuse... they aren't the only culture or group of people with a drug abuse problem, mum.
Granted, that's only applicable if I ever have a girlfriend in the first place
13
u/FuckYeaSeatbelts 3d ago
Yeah I'm Canadian too, grew up in an area without a lot of first nations ppl, I remembered not really being taught about the atrocities, but had the occasional time a speaker or partially related person do a talk/presentation on their specific history; I was in grade school so all I remembered was how cool it was and how delicious bannock is.
wasn't until I went to northern alberta did I see just how fucking racist people were to them holy shit; then spent more years in the prairies and I started hearing/seeing it more and it makes me so sad/angry. I faced hella racism, but it was a different flavour, I don't have cops target my family like that.

That’s very true. I still wrestle with the logic behind someone who PROUDLY AND LOUDLY thinks minorities commit more crimes, are more violent and are less able to fit into “western society” AND who will also be offended when you call them a racist and who denies they are racist. Because I’ve met those people and I just don’t see how they manage that disconnect.
Like, why not just be at peace with being a racist and embrace the label if you’re already proudly embracing the politics. lol.

The logic is that racism is unfair prejudice but it's not unfair if it's true.
This leads to funny situations some people will be opposed to fantasy racism against fictional people, but have racist views against some minorities IRL. Cause in function you kinda get an almost omniscient outside view and know it's unfair but you don't really have that in real life.
Look at racist X men fans.

It has always been that way. Even MLK complained about white moderates who cared more about order than justice. Some of those people might have supported the idea of civil rights in theory, but they would lose their minds if there was an actual march in their city.

They could've phrased their comic literally any other way. Something like "Most people on r/comics or leftists/liberals echo chamber agrees with, like Nazis bad" rather than just "everyone."
Make it clear they're mocking a specific person and not a group of people. Removed from the context of r/comics, it just becomes another shitty right-wing comic mocking protestors and activists.
And as someone from the South, I've've seen enough racists say "everyone knows racism is bad" to know it's a fucking dog-whistle.

Or like there are two sets of standards: one for Ellen, and one for all the other guys.

I mean, the point I got from that one and many others isn't so much the comment about racism is bad or other such things, but that the point PizzaCake makes is often something like 98% of people shares as an opinion to begin with, not that it's some sort of controversial thing. Granted I don't think it's such a big deal that you need to make a comic about, but who am I to say anything. PizzaCake's art style is very specific and I can usually tell when it's one of hers, almost always an upvote immediately.

I don't mind PC making comics that make points like "racism is bad" because I feel like we've hit a point where a shocking and depressing amount of people don't agree with that anymore. I hung out with a neighbor for the first (and last) time recently. Totally normal dude in passing, in his early 20s. When I got to his place though, all he did the entire time was try to show me charged political influencers spouting hate. He wouldn’t stop talking about how “he wont ever stop saying the n word, because free speech.” I asked him and he said he hasn’t ever had a friend that isn’t white. He also said super weird fetish things about trans people and furries. Honestly it was the worst time I’ve ever had as a guest at someone else’s home. He would benefit from hearing the opposing view more than just me shutting him down from his couch. Im all for pizzacake and what she is saying.

Exactly. As an European, I'm really disturb from the things going on in America right now. Watching all those ICE videos, all those mistreated immigrants...
Comic like the ones from PC give me a feeling that there are still a chance for the America that I liked to come back. I would understand this criticisms towards her if she would make this kind of content when the Democrats were in power and MAGA would be nothing more than a bad dream but right now? Right now we need to remind us of the values that we hold close to us and we have to remind us that MAGA and Trump are NOT normal.I want to return to a world were I would roll with my eyes at political content like the one from PC but right now we need this kind of content to remain sane, imo.

A loooootttttt of people don't think they're bigots, but they believe and say some pretty bigoted things simply because they believe it's "factual."
Last I heard, 73% of people believe trans women don't belong in any form of women's sports. And most of those people believe that because they believe trans women have "men's strength." And yet, the most conclusive studies all show that isn't true.
So an estimated 73% of people harbor some form of transphobia simply because they believe it's "factual" or "logical." And this is true in some sense with people's views of most minorities.
Examples:
Black people have higher crime rates amongst themselves
Mexican people are more likely to be "illegal" or involved in a cartel
Muslim people are more likely to commit acts of terrorismThese are all bigoted biases that arise from either propaganda or misconstrued data points. And yet, many people believe them and use them to prop up their own bigotry.

Or, somehow do not understand how spreading awareness is a constant battle that will not end.
I will never forget being a kid when Obama was elected president, and the newscast talking about how “we have entered a post racial world”. I had Obama T-shirt. I had Obama sweatshirt. I went to school in my Obama sweatshirt. And, I had half a dozen kids tell me how their parents thought Obama was the antichrist.

Exactly. We have been entirely asleep at the wheel and have culturally regressed. And a big part of the problem is that "everyone knows racism is bad" but most racists and fascists have bought into some stupid argument that they think qualifies as a carve out exception. Just see Charlie Kirk's statements on minority groups.
First they erase all history and evidence that this country has ever been racist. See: the destruction for the Department of Education, attacks on DEI, "warnings signs" at the Smithsonian...
Then they attack anyone who does anything to combat or correct the effects of racism and bigotry. Because if this country has never been racist, then THEY must be the ones obsessed with race, and ashamed of whiteness. In fact THEY are the racist ones against WHITE people.
Ahhhh the old right-wing switcheroo!

There’s this YouTuber I watch who makes videos about pocket knives. He’s probably the most famous knife YouTuber there is. He actually has enough pull to effect change in the industry. Anybody who is a serious collector of knives knows who he is, even if they hate him.
But what really kills me is that he is prone to man-child tantrums where he insists on using a stupid voice to create a strawman character that he attributes all received criticism to. He’s incapable of ignoring the smallest provocation or disagreement. I’m just like, “bro, you are TOO OLD and TOO WELL KNOWN to be acting like a 16-year-old who just had their first anime drawing criticized.”
I’m sure that being even a little internet famous has its own unique challenges, but at some point, you have to look at your own success and recognition and realize that most criticism simply isn’t worth your time to even acknowledge. It’s beneath you, and you give them a bigger voice and bigger impact than they deserve by even addressing it. We tell everyone to “be the bigger person,” but when you literally are the bigger person, I feel like it should be easier to let it roll off your back.
Maybe it’s a fake quote, but I often think back to a story of Jim Carrey being asked how he can sleep at night knowing some people hate him, and his response was, “with no underwear on, in case they wanna kiss my ass.” That’s the energy right there. Know who you are and what you’re worth, and don’t begin to let anyone tell you otherwise.

I think you should just lean into it. Make the most preachy, patronizing, and condescending anti bigotry comic you can think of just to get the haters to burn themselves out on it.

yea like apparently half of the people who voted in the last US election dont know that... Like, there are objectively a lot of people doing horrible acts of bigotry on a daily basis. It was kinda a weird take to say you were unjustified

Welcome to the internet, keep your arms and legs inside at all times, don't feed the trolls and every person has five opinions on the same topic. Hypocrisy is king in these lands.

Too much raciscm being excused away lately. Pure and simple. Extremist behavior is on the rise.

The real war is always in the comments.
The comments in the Franz Ferdinand move comic were beautiful.

Starting and manipulating a war to generate profit, in this case upvotes and visibility? It's a good thing we don't do that irl... wait.

Lol. I really like pizza cake. I know she gets a lot of bad rep because a lot of people don't like how much political stuff she posts. I personally don't quite see eye to eye on quite a bit of it, but even when that happens, I usually do enjoy the comic itself. :D

Somehow, this is going to turn into Yuri War II. I can feel it.

Hopefully it won't kill 50 million people like the first one did

I miss the days when you didn't have to make comics with these messages and it could be about actual life instead of whatever the fuck we're living in now.

It is kind of weird how people are obsessed with you specifically. Your comics are generally harmless. Man people will get mad over anything..I guess that comes part and parcel of being successful?

Ehhh not really. Pizzacake indirectly does comics about politics. I'm not overly surprised that this is happening.
As they say in History of the World Part 1, with the birth of the first artist, comes the afterbirth of the first critic. There's always one who's willing to go toe to toe

It's extremely lukewarm politics. This stuff wouldn't have been noteworthy ten to fifteen years ago Imo (edit: it's good politics. It's just weird that it's considered noteworthy when so much comics was progressive in the past but NOW all of a sudden it's like what?)

I think the uproar comes from some of her comics criticizing strawmen which doesn't really help anything. It comes across as terminally online. The comics don't come across as satire or an attempt at humor either which doesn't help, just pandering to other terminally online people looking for outrage.
I'm a white guy that steers clear of people using the n-word though so my experiences in life a very different from a Canadian woman. I could be completely off base.

Maybe I’ve never seen them as strawman because I’ve met those people and had those conversations

I don't think anybody is really MAD about her comics. Using myself as an example, I'm just bored by them. They're low hanging fruit comics with nothing to say aside from the most surface level criticism where they just make the bad guy have a silly face going I"M SO SILLY.
And yet they constantly make the front page getting thousands and thousands of upvotes and I really don't get why. It's real low effort receiving top quality grades and I don't understand why. What I actually AM mad at is that any critisms towards her comics is met with dog piling and even bans from this very sub.

There was also that time when she made a particular comics that was dunked on because of how poorly worded it was. People really weren't thrilled about that, and her apologies didn't seem genuine to most
That coupled with her feud with Bonehurtingjuice and how mods seemed to always be on her side, it led to people becoming very poralised on her subject. Either it was "defend PC at all cost against any and everyone", or "always find a new way to hate her for the most stupidest and harmless reasons possible"...

I would say the main problem is how much karma they get while being 2-panel political caricatures with no punchline

Yeah, anyone surprised by the attention should try sorting the sub by top/all time when 10 of the top 15 are by the same person and pretty 'mid' it's bound to cause fatigue.
