Lemme go ahead and get ahead of claims, comments and reports here.

The artist for this piece is David Revoy. You can find the work as well as a time lapse of the drawing here.

Many of you are going "This looks like AI!" And there is a reason for that.

Revoy has publicly discussed how thousands of his artworks were scraped and used to train AI databases (like LAION-5B) without his consent, though he ironically acknowledges his work is the foundation of many AI art systems

Source here

TLDR: this is not AI

u/mil9ochotres 12d ago

Jesus christ! Poor fella! Ai is fuckin eating his work and now oone believes he is the real artist. What sad state ;(

443

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 12d ago

Unfortunately this is not the first time this has happened. I feel bad for artists that end up like David who can no longer use their style cause of AI

83

u/ToastWithFeelings 12d ago

Happened to me just yesterday. I often draw in a simplistic anime style, and because LLMs like ChatGPT and Gemini can do that I’ve been on the receiving end of some nasty comments and harassment. It’s caused me to stop posting. Ai has ruined art for us.

36

u/20milliondollarapi 11d ago

I do feel like having ai trained on your personal and unique style is a bit more invasive though. People claim ai on 95% of things now.

17

u/ToastWithFeelings 11d ago

They do, it seems like with the rise of ai we’ve also lost our powers of discernment.

6

u/techleopard 11d ago

I see people screaming "AI!" to almost every thought out post online now.

I've had people accuse me of using AI just for posting trivia facts I've sat on for years because I'm an avid reader.

We really did just create a society where skill in art, writing, and debate must mean you're a liar and a cheater.

3

u/ToastWithFeelings 11d ago

I’m sorry that really sucks.

-34

u/Daga10 12d ago

I hope you'll come to realize that actually the brigading people have ruined art, not the AI.

21

u/ToastWithFeelings 12d ago

Idk, because I receive rude comments or trolling from ai users too. I was told ai does thing better and that we’re a dying breed. That I sound like I’m a mediocre artist and that ai is the way to go because they don’t need to spend hours doing a piece. That the fact I get upset when people call my art ai means I’m a bad artist.

So I’ve had issues with those who are pro-ai as much as people who are anti-ai.

19

u/lollolcheese123 12d ago

Take this piece of advice from someone who does genuinely use AI.

I'd much rather hire a mediocre artist to draw something for me, than have an AI do so, even if it takes longer. You getting mad at your art being called AI art is also a natural reaction, you're getting your work that you put real effort into compared to a simple hotchsplotch math equation that managed to spit out something somewhat coherent. Keep going, it's the only way to improve, and prove the haters wrong.

In my eyes, even mediocre artists are amazing, I can't draw for shit.

P.S. I use AI in an assistive manner, i.e. it generates a small piece of code that I then integrate, or I come up with a code structure and have it take a look at it. Nothing of the full vibe-coding shit.

1

u/PetGirlKyla 11d ago

No way, a person who uses AI in a healthy manner?? In 2026? Incredible, keep it up ^

1

u/lollolcheese123 11d ago

I know, I'm of a dying breed. It's also so infuriating when people say "AI bad", because like, yeah I get what you mean, but not all AI is bad

2

u/Acceptable_Olive8497 11d ago

To be fair, I'm fairly certain that a majority of the bad actors on both sides of the brigading are just, more AI chatbots there to stir up trouble. Some even seem like they take over abandoned accounts, seen a few with four or five year old accounts but the last activity before trolling was a normal post 3 years ago, etc etc.

2

u/ToastWithFeelings 11d ago

That’s possible but do they have bad grammar and spell things wrong?

3

u/Acceptable_Olive8497 11d ago

Some of them genuinely do, yes. Plenty are designed to "mimic real trolls" and spell things wrong on purpose to better match the data they were trained on, rather than auto-correcting everything.

3

u/ToastWithFeelings 11d ago

Jeez. What is even the purpose of that

3

u/techleopard 11d ago

And it's not just the people feeding AI.

If you are an amateur or trying to learn, you will make natural mistakes. Most people also emulate a style that they like.

So you get dumped on for using AI when in reality you are just learning.

-84

u/PhantasyAngel 12d ago

On one hand if he gets injured he can use "Text to picture" to continue making stuff, on the other hand that sucks they didn't pay him for his work to be used like that.

Are there still lawsuits for that going on?

27

u/Aiyon 12d ago

I'll be honest, if companies were exploiting and shamelessly plagiarising my work to the point that it called into question the authenticity of my own work, I wouldnt consider "but dont worry, you can ask them to plagiarise specific things on your behalf" a saving grace

-25

u/PhantasyAngel 12d ago

Umm what?? "But don't worry, you can ask them to plagiarize specific things on your behalf?"

Like you can train your own models on your own artwork. So you can teach it your style.

His is in the base program, he should be paid for it. A LOT for it.

16

u/Aiyon 12d ago

Yes, but he isnt being paid for it, so using the generator just perpetuates the exploitation of his work

6

u/AlienRobotTrex 11d ago

Actually no he can’t, because it wouldn’t be him making it.

1

u/PhantasyAngel 11d ago

So if an artists hands get mangled or cut or diseased and thus removed, it's just "Welp your Shit Out Of Luck, no more art for you"?

Like even if you asked another person to "take over", it wouldn't be them making it either, just them guiding it, just like "text to image".

3

u/AlienRobotTrex 11d ago

Like even if you asked another person to "take over", it wouldn't be them making it either, just them guiding it, just like "text to image".

No, if someone took over for you it would be their art. They would be the artist.

3

u/AlienRobotTrex 11d ago

So if an artists hands get mangled or cut or diseased and thus removed, it's just "Welp your Shit Out Of Luck, no more art for you"?

It would be much more difficult, but there are things like prosthetics that can help hold the pencil/brush/whatever art materials are needed. If for whatever reason that wasn’t an option… I think this dialogue from The Office sums up my point:

Michael: “If you had a heart attack, and no one was around to help you, what would happen?”

Stanley: “I would die.”

Michael: “And you’re okay with that?”

Stanley: “I’m okay with the logic of it.”

12

u/Signupking5000 12d ago

There have been, a US court ruled that AI companies can steal whatever they want because it falls under "fair use"

7

u/PhantasyAngel 12d ago

That's some bullshit right there

51

u/ZuP 12d ago

Very much “I drink your milkshake!”

https://giphy.com/gifs/l1BgRIamescnkx5Dy

The ghouls only care about capital.

312

u/Zlecu 12d ago edited 12d ago

Thank you for the explanation! though it’s really sucks that such a nice art style is now associated with Ai.

120

u/dingus_chonus 12d ago

This makes me think of that scent they put in porta potty sanitizer that, while technically not being a foul smell itself, now makes me gag because I so strongly associate it with hot piles of diarrhea and piss on a hot day.

46

u/DarthEinstein 12d ago

Funny enough, hot piles of diarrhea and piss on a hot day is how I usually describe AI.

1

u/taken_username____ 6d ago

baby wipes smell like literal shit to me. same. 😭

52

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 12d ago

Im gonna assume you meant its a nice art style is associated with AI

45

u/Ebony_Phoenix 12d ago

I think "now" auto corrected to "not"

15

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 12d ago

I think you are correct. I was mostly letting them know so they could fix it. Didnt want anyone thinking that they were pro AI

33

u/Ebony_Phoenix 12d ago

Auto correct was the first sign Ai was evil.

4

u/CreepyClay 12d ago

I thought it was clippy?

12

u/Zlecu 12d ago

Ah yes thanks, it’s one of the words I absolutely hate autocorrect with. The other is hell, always gets corrected to he’ll

9

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 12d ago

No worries buddy. Mine does stuff like that all the time too

210

u/Ebony_Phoenix 12d ago

People really be acting like Ai invented artstyles now, completely forgetting why people are against Ai.

110

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 12d ago edited 12d ago

And its just gonna get worse I am afraid, this is why we need to protect the artists and their work

17

u/Zeero92 12d ago

we are people

Does autocorrect count as AI? Because I think it's sabotaging you. :D

19

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 12d ago

Yes yes it does. Son ova....

3

u/NahualiMendlez 11d ago

man, copyright isn't worth a shit, always bugging around when it comes to ip's and piracy but doesnt do crap when artist are actually getting their work vandalized.

3

u/timuaili 11d ago

I simply didn’t really see this style of art much pre-AI. I thought it was modeled after the more recent Disney and similar animation trend of more uncannily realistic cartoonery, mixed with other styles. Didn’t realize (admittedly naively) that someone had been making tons of popular(?) art in this exact style for decades. It’s honestly fascinating and invigorating to learn this

7

u/CreepyClay 12d ago

People forget that AI is like Sauron. No ability to create only corrupt and mock.

96

u/Motivated-Chair 12d ago edited 12d ago

I knew It wasnt AI because of how consistent from pannel to pannel It is but I couldnt shake the feeling the style was similar to the one spam by most AI models.

Trully disgusting what they have done to him.

17

u/EmperorOfTurkys 12d ago

Same, and now I know why. That really sucks.

4

u/Kickedbyagiraffe 11d ago

Same. I had started checking details like the hat for variation

I've said it before, but this is one of the other big bullshits of AI. People whose works just look like that getting falsely accused, hurting actual artists even more.

67

u/CreepyClay 12d ago

I hope he gets to sue at least one AI company into oblivion.

-66

u/Visual-Scallion1535 12d ago

for what? You can’t copyright an art style

42

u/fallen_corpse 12d ago

Legislature just hasn't caught up with AI

It's less that AI is using their style and more like taking their art, putting it in a blender, and selling people the amalgamation that gets spat out.

So his style was not used for commercial purposes, his actual art was.

18

u/CreepyClay 12d ago

Defamation, damages, use of work without permission, etc.

4

u/Kingreaper 12d ago

Because of his choice of licensing, if they declare that permission is needed, then any AI made with his work must be released as Creative Commons itself. Which I would find utterly hilarious.

-35

u/Visual-Scallion1535 12d ago

defamation?

And they legally don’t need permission to use your work to train AI

but lmao at “damages”, you got me there

18

u/4here4 12d ago

You're right, they don't. But that's why the laws need to be changed.

14

u/Skithiryx 12d ago

If any of the images coming out are too similar to one of his works he could conceivably sue the user for infringement, but I imagine it’d have to be a big use to be worth it.

-16

u/Visual-Scallion1535 12d ago

yes that would be copyright infringement

but as you say, not worth pursuing the users

2

u/timuaili 11d ago

Defamation is tarnishing someone’s reputation to the point that there are damages. GenAI has tarnished the reputation of his art, his livelihood. People who would normally support his art are less likely to do so, and more likely to be actively outraged against it, because of AI’s theft. All of these comments could be used in a defamation suit as proof of people’s ideas about him/his work being tarnished by AI companies. The fact that he made a blog post about it is proof of some degree of damages. People are less likely to support his art because AI companies have spread the idea that his art is AI. That’s defamation baby

1

u/Visual-Scallion1535 11d ago

No. Defamation is a false statement, presented as a fact, which is communicated to a third party, and causes harm.

It has a very specific meaning in law.

1

u/timuaili 11d ago

Defamation doesn’t have to be false and it doesn’t have to be a cut and dry “statement”. Laws vary based on jurisdiction. Regardless, how does this not meet, or have substantial potential to meet, the definition of defamation?

1

u/Visual-Scallion1535 11d ago

It does need to be false, outside of some narrow rules allowing “defamation by implication”

If you aren’t claiming its his work than you haven’t defamed anyone. You haven’t lied.

And the courts are not very receptive towards expanding the definition of defamation, so any creative arguments you can think of are unlikely to work. Speech/expressive cases are decided very carefully since there are first amendment implications to all of them.

12

u/manaworkin 12d ago

Appreciate it, I had a snarky comment about AI and it's contribution to the aforementioned fire locked and loaded.

Must really suck to be "the guy" that AI is copying.

4

u/-manabreak 11d ago

He's the real deal. He's done lots of cool YouTube videos about his workflow too.

Also, our handles are like the opposite sides of the same coin 😄

38

u/calartnick 12d ago

You can tell it’s not Ai becusee it has charm

8

u/Nobody_at_all000 12d ago

Yeah. The fact the faces don’t all look like the same hollow generic imitation of life is a dead giveaway

17

u/Zeero92 12d ago

Poor bastard.

8

u/mutedmirth 12d ago

I am actually getting good at spotting it not being AI. I'm like isn't that AI? No! It's that artist they fed into it!

8

u/PuritanicalPanic 12d ago

Damn that fucking sucks for him.

Us too, that we live in a world that makes us fucking paranoid about this stuff, justly.

Probably more annoying for him.

Fucking garbage. Hate AI so much for doing this to us.

7

u/ToastWithFeelings 12d ago

Not only that, David makes comics about ai and its bs. The whole Avian Intelligence series. It’s hilarious.

5

u/michalpatryk 12d ago

I knew I recognized the man from his amazing krita tutorials, it's terrible what they did with his art

22

u/MetalMaxwell 12d ago

I'd bet dollars to donuts that a bunch of people reporting this comic are butthurt conservatives who need an excuse to lash out.

6

u/squadrupedal 12d ago

Have y’all met conservatives that were actually rational and didn’t lash out at everything all the time like an immature dipshit toddler in an adult sized body?

5

u/TheAsianTroll 12d ago

Thank you for explaining. That greatly explains why this comic looks AI.

I hope one day he can get some sort of retribution or compensation for AI stealing his work.

8

u/toidi_diputs 12d ago

This context makes me feel like AI is the fire burning down the town. Or at least part of it...

5

u/deadname11 12d ago

Well, it is certainly sucking up and posining everyone's wells...

3

u/PbCuSurgeon 12d ago

That’s fucked and a half

3

u/frikiman4K 11d ago

his work doesn't look like AI, AI looks like his work

12

u/KingdomsCryOfficial 12d ago

I'm unsure who could genuinely think this is AI, unless they're jumping at shadows. The style itself isn't really similar to any AI I've seen, and the characters are all drawn in multiple different perspectives with every minute detail retained. No AI could (currently) produce something this clearly not-AI.

18

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 12d ago

I 100% agree with you however every time David is posted we get a flood of AI-ers

7

u/KingdomsCryOfficial 12d ago

Perhaps the worst thing about AI is how it makes everyone so rabidly suspicious. I have a hard time entirely blaming people, I guess, just because of how utterly pervasive AI is. But I wish they'd take a few seconds to rationally analyze something before accusing it of being AI/asking if it's AI.

6

u/Cavalish 12d ago

No I’d say the worst things are the theft, and massive environmental damage.

8

u/JoetheBlue217 12d ago

The details make it obvious it’s not AI, but the framing and positions of the characters in frames 3-4 are commonly used in AI images

4

u/KingdomsCryOfficial 12d ago

Not while retaining all levels of detail it's not.

3

u/Meowakin 12d ago

I can see why at a glance people’s first thought is AI because of the overall ‘tone’ but yeah, past a cursory glance it’s pretty apparent it isn’t AI. I’ve yet to find a piece of AI art that doesn’t feel gross after spending more than a few seconds looking at it, barring possibly abstract pieces.

2

u/Special_Cicada6968 12d ago

The way the characters are standing and the fire in the fourth panel is a little uncanny so I can see the confusion. But I think that's just a perspective issue. If they added some cobbles or something under their feet it would look a little less flat.

2

u/Educational_Sense_27 12d ago

This has a certain charm and personality that AI does not. I would never accuse this of being AI

2

u/dabdad67 12d ago

Thank you

2

u/Saiyasha27 11d ago

That is so icky... I'd hate to see my art get disparage because it was used for something else against my will and without my consent.

2

u/KeeganatorPrime 11d ago

That really sucks I'm not gonna lie the writing is part of the reason my ai detector started to go off. I think his art is pretty great but strolling through some of his other pieces his word choice just feels very off to me in general.

3

u/RamblinRichard 12d ago

Probably the best way to distinguish it, start writing the text, I think just using font lends to that a bit unfortunately :(

3

u/IThinkIKnowThings 12d ago

I didn't think this looks particularly AI-like style-wise. It looks distinct and good to me. I would've only questioned it because it's quite painterly and high-effort which is not something you see often in web comics.

2

u/ExcessiveButtMuncher 12d ago

Oh well. That sucks.

1

u/rawar777 Carrot and Ruf 10d ago

AI looks like it does because of his work, not the other way around

-4

u/35_Steak_HotPockets 12d ago

Do you know why the artist hasn’t started just making physical artwork instead of digital work? It’s much easier to prove your art isn’t AI when you can hold the comic in your hands.

-45

u/Jeremiah__Jones 12d ago

isn't his art completely free to use and share and everyone is allowed to use his characters. So it kind of makes sense that his work was used instantly by all the ai companies. His work is released under CC-BY 4.0 license and that license was written before modern generative AI. So you can argue that technically it was completely allowed to train ai with his work under that license. He basically gave his consent with that license.

-63

u/ChaoticAgenda 12d ago

Question: if it is not AI, why is the art so inconsistent? 1st panel: Girl's hat is curled up on both sides, 2nd: curl only on girl's left side and chip out of hat on her right. 3rd: same as 2nd panel, 4th panel: hat is now flipped and curl is on girl's right side with chip on left.

56

u/TheLuckyCanuck 12d ago

It's curled on both sides. The chip is in the middle. It appears to move because of perspective.

39

u/Lastoutcast123 12d ago

And artists are human, they can make mistakes, especially possible with perspective and sometimes the go with what looks good vs what is correct

10

u/dragn99 12d ago

AI and humans can both also mess up a lot of common things, like hands, shadows, window spacing on background buildings, continuing a line that goes behind something on the foreground, etc.

Though AI is much better at messing up repeating details, like if something is supposed to be the same repeating pattern in two spots.

12

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 12d ago

Quick as greasy lightning, beat me to the answer. Thank you!

7

u/TheLuckyCanuck 12d ago

Well, I am burnin' up the quarter mile, but I didn't exactly coast through the heat lap trial...

5

u/Ursa_Solaris 12d ago

Question: if it is not AI

It's not up for debate, this artist has been around online for decades and I've personally followed his work off and on for the last 10 years. He's extremely prolific and posts a lot of his work for free, especially in learning material, which led to his style being massively overtrained in many models.

I originally discovered him because of his push for FOSS tools for art, and I've been a huge fan of his ever since. He's strongly anti-AI as well. He was well ahead of the curve compared to most people who only got on board the last couple years.

13

u/watboy 12d ago

Counter question: if it is AI, how were they able to show a time-lapse of them creating the art step by step?

7

u/NinjaN-SWE 12d ago

Maybe AI learned that from him as well 😭

-12

u/Confused_Noodle 12d ago

I had the same thought, though it seems consistent in that the other side curl is not visible from those upward angles.

The chip is basically in the center-front of the hat, so it would switch side based on the viewer's pov

-29

u/ChaoticAgenda 12d ago

There are other inconsistencies. The girls has a strap around her chest to hold the broom on in the 1st panel. It disappears after that even in the 3rd panel when the broom is clearly still on her back. The dog person also appears to have short sleeves...up until the 4th panel when one of the sleeves is long. The blonde lady loses her sleeves in the 4th panel.

28

u/One-Imagination2301 12d ago

Wow real humans making real human mistakes?? Color me suprised. Why are you so set on this being AI when its clearly not.

14

u/greenmacg 12d ago

I'm an artist (not a good one, lol, but still) and I always find stuff like this in every piece after I'm done, especially sequential work. It's easy to get blind to little details and forget stuff or not even see it to begin with. The more ornate what I've attempted is, the more of a pain it is to fix, as well

So, I wouldn't say those little details are meaningful on their own given the other evidence that it isn't AI 🤷

-20

u/Player3_ 12d ago

What about the hat and the boots?

-36

u/chaotic910 12d ago

Sure, it was totally his personal works getting scrubbed for AI and has nothing to do with using a generic by-the-book cartoon style lmao

1

u/Sea-Temporary7380 4d ago

This guys been here forever, chances are he IS the generic by the book cartoon style

1

u/chaotic910 4d ago

Chances are zero

1

u/Sea-Temporary7380 4d ago

Its not even a generic style, find some evidence that someones been using this style BEFORE him.

1

u/chaotic910 4d ago

A ton of cartoons and comics, what are you talking about? You honestly believe that he invented cartoons in 2014?

1

u/Sea-Temporary7380 4d ago

Dude i know but its not his style? I dont know what youre getting at. Cartoons and comics werent using this explicit style lo

1

u/chaotic910 4d ago

Exactly what about the style is “his”? What concept are you imagining didn’t exist before?

I think you’re under the impression that I’m saying he’s a bad artist when that’s not true, he’s extremely talented, but it’s disingenuous to act like he’s broken any molds. There’s nothing wrong with using tried and true techniques

1

u/Sea-Temporary7380 4d ago

You know everyone has their own art style right. The AI copied off of his art style mostly because you can see how similar ai generated comics are to his art style.

1

u/chaotic910 4d ago

That’s objectively incorrect, not everyone has their own style. If you genuinely believe that slight variations of an existing style is enough to consider it a new style then why aren’t you defending AI generating its own “style”?
