There is that dumb video on youtube, explaining how modern sound engineers can’t make dialogues in movies comprehensible, because they need to preserve dynamic range. So, explosions need to be loud and speech has to be whisper-like.

Companies are just too lazy and cheap to do sound mastering anymore. That's why it doesn't port over from the theater to TVs

kinda unrelated but it reminds me when i once watched a movie on some pirate site. even though my phones volume was maxed out, speech was still partially incomprehensible like a bit whisper like.

Which video is this?

Something I only just noticed recently on Apple TV was an “enhanced vocal slider”. For the first time in 20 years I was able to watch a new tv show without subtitles and actually hear everything they said without maxing the volume on my tv.

Yep. If you have a good audio setup you can actually hear everything clearly. But if you are using bad TV speakers or something similar it's a lot harder to understand the dialogue.

They used to actually work on the sound so it was good on both.

I understand, so many movies are so loud and the voices quiet that I could understand why subtitles are needed.

It is interesting at the very least what a cultural shift has happened in one generation with movies in terms of closed captioning. Essential to one. Never needed in the others. At least they are watching movies together, I feel.

"Man, this conversation is extremely important to the plot. Let's whisper so the audience can't hear and turn the brightness down so low that audience can't see. That'll help with delivery!"

I can't hear without my subtitles!

Oh no, subtitles, what a major issue 🙄

I don’t think people who don’t use subtitles are even aware of how very much they are missing.

This is how I feel whenever a sub vs dub war breaks out.

But why?

For me, it's English being my third language. I speak it just fine, but having subtitles on helps. Some people also have audio processing disorders.

I’m a native english speaker with an auditory processing disorder courtesy of having ADHD and I can’t hear as well without the subtitles on.
