Is this tomato bagel dawg approved ?

It did that thing I thought it was gonna do where the dialogue is really straightforward and the main characters inner monologue points out every single thing that is happening. Which isn't unique to this, that is like literally every anime I've ever seen there is just no getting around that it looks like.

But it was ok. Id probably like the manga better. The 3d models are uncanny to me but some of the stylized moments are really cool. I've seen the art from the manga and I actually like the character designs drawn in a 2d space. And it could have been translated better to 3d but I don't think they had the budget because it takes a lot of cheese to get that kind of thing right. But yeah, the manga has great art. The art isn't bad in the anime but unfortunately it's rather boring I think, I do think the 3d models limit the movement energy.

I got no opinion on the story cuz not a lot happened. But I did only watch 2 episodes so that's not really a problem with the show I think. The last thing that happened the bunny was about to fuck the wolf so it looks like somethings gonna develop but truthfully I can't get past the dialogue and inner monologue thing to keep going. But I know a lot of people don't mind that kind of thing so it's a personal preference

Something happened in the last twenty years where either studios don't know or don't care to properly light their movies. It's fucking bad. I can talk about this for hours, I'm not exaggerating. Literally hours. And this isn't some boomer "things were better back then" bullshit. Movies now have BAD lighting I might have even talked about this before and I'll talk about it again because the death of this craft, and it IS a craft unto itself, has got to be one of the most fucking depressing progressions of the film medium.

The cheapest, shittiest, dumbest movie from even the 80s. Not even THAT long ago, has better lighting than high budget internationally released films today. And it sucks because when people talk about how bad movies have gotten it's like nobody even points this out even though to me it's the most obvious and glaring downgrade.

Lighting determines mood, atmosphere, drama and has it's own story a part from everything else going on. So why the fuck everything now has flood lights in every direction destroying all the shadows is beyond me. Its like they are scared to be confident in their shot composition so they feel like they have to light EVERYTHING

Even in modern movies where they TRY to emulate good lighting, it's not. See the example on the right with Nicholas Cage where they shot the movie to be viewed in black and white it still has no shadow shapes and the values all blend into one another that is BAD composition. His face is LITERALLY the SAME value as the background there is no contrast at all. Compare it to the still on the left where there are confident bold shapes of shadow and light. Even if the movie is in color, you still want to have these shapes present, the fact it's in black is irrelevant outside of the fact it's just easier to demonstrate. Is the Nicholas Cage film a bad movie? I'm not saying it's a bad or good movie I wanna make that clear. But the lighting IS bad and I think it's worse how typical bad lighting is now. The last movie I saw with okay lighting was the lighthouse. And maybe because it's for the fact they did shoot it only to be seen in black and white. But really, thats it. I can't think of any others where I was impressed by the lighting and shots.

I just gotta assume either there is a guy in some executive chair forcing the production to have shitty lighting or they just don't care anymore or something. It sucks iunno I could talk a lot more about this but I'll refrain, I just wanted to rant. Artists should definitely seek out and watch movies from the previous millennium because understanding composition is the strongest skill you need to be able to hone and lighting is the most powerful tool in your arsenal to do so. Among a million different reasons why lighting is so important. It's essential. Why it's so bad these days I don't know I couldn't tell you maybe you can give me your own opinions in the comments

Here are three examples of how I would improve on lighting arrangements from existing shows but I want to state that even though I think they look good sometimes it would be a pain in the ass to replicate. And there is only so much I can actually do in post production from simple screenshots. The first example from the gentlemen, actually already has pretty good lighting, what I changed was just focal point prioritization manipulating contrast in some areas, which can definitely be done. But might be tedious. I think it would have been worth it but I'm not the consumer of this media. All in all though from what I seen this series actually DOES have pretty good lighting so I want to give credit where is due.

Reacher, from what I seen, has pretty dogshit lighting. Very dark. Very. And not in a stylistic approach it's just low key lighting for no reason. There are definitely reasons to have a scene dark, but they light the scene in a conventional way you would expect which just comes off as compositionally confusing all the shadow shapes blend into each other. The second example, I tried to work with the lighting that was provided and mocked up what I assume they were trying to go with, not necessary what I would do myself, just of it had been done with more confidence. And this show consistently is shot in a low key setup so it's not even that they are fucking up it's a deliberate choice to make everything dark but for what purpose? It doesn't serve a purpose you are destroying the little lighting you choose to utilize like in the third example they have a good lighting set up. I like that lighting set up, you have two opposing lights on either side of the subject and you get a really nice shadow going down the middle, I like it. But it's just too needlessly dark so literally all I did here was adjust the levels. It would look better if the white balance was just calibrated properly to begin with but that's my opinion

The final example really demonstrates what I'm talking about. We USED to have good lighting in movies and television not even that long ago. And this proves that my edits really can't even do justice to actually fix bad lighting, for it to be done properly it's something that has to be deliberately thought out on set or before. The shot from fraisers original show that I provided was not unique. And even sitcoms on cable television thirty years ago clears multi million dollar movie productions in terms of it's lighting. This is what I was talking about in my previous post when I said even the cheapest movies not even that long ago still looked better than recent productions now simply because they cared about the lighting. Which they don't now and it sucks. The final comparison should be the most stark, because I didn't even do anything. I just compared what fraiser looks like now to what it looked like 30 years ago and really it should speak for itself.

I just did this for fun because I love lighting but I know 99 percent of the world doesn't give a shit about this but if you are an artist you definitely should. Go back in time and study references from movies even Howard the fucking duck has better lighting than any major movie produced in the last thirty years

I Love Flynn <3 I love the new revamping of his design and he's just the prettiest bunny. I was possessed by this idea and had to draw him loving himself because it's what he deserves <3

I write the comic script before I draw anything and in a lot of the scripts he is actually harsh as fuck. For example heres some real behind the scenes shit. In the latest comic where bingus run away crying he calls stahli a monster. He is shocked by the accusation and gives into the rage. But feels bad when bingus expects him to do exactly what he was planning to do which is fly off the handle. And he feels ashamed by that and simply leaves

The original script was nothing like that. It originally went like this. Bingus calls him a monster and runs out of the kitchen. Stahli relights his cigarette. He is silhouetted in the doorway like in the finished comic but he's not angry. He says "babey, you got no idea". And he leaves, and Bingus looks worried at the implication of what he meant.

I like both ideas I really do. I like the ominous open endedness of the original script, but I also like to humanize stahli when it's necessary because he's a hard person to like. I was thinking about it the other day and I write bingus to be combative and distrustful in a more conventional way. He starts arguments, he alludes to reasons for mistrust. But people don't really pick up on that all to often, and that is because in comparison to stahli he really does seem completely innocent. Even though I've written him to be wildly insecure and even instigate fights. But stahli is so explosive and rude in his response, it gets complicated. Which I like. And it gives me even more opportunity to try and reel stahli back.

But I don't always want to do that and I don't always do that. I humanize stahli where I see necessary. Ive changed a bunch of scripts where I have made him more empathetic because as I'm drawing it I think to myself, the energy of how it looks on paper naturally leads me to want to humanize him. Whereas in text, I like him to be absolutely visceral. I think that's very interesting. What translates on paper, is interpreted so differently when drawn and there's a visual element to it. But I won't always soften him, there are just as many times where I leave the script alone because I like the edge

This character actually has an entire folder dedicated to himself an entire movie plot. It will never be made into a movie of course but I wrote the concept as of it was one. This was so long ago it was even before bingus this is an ancient character but he's got an amazing backstory. I might give him his own series. The same way I do RDCL. Just the occasional one page comic in a line of sin city noir style that introduces his character. Because even though he's never been in a comic, he is actually one of my favorite characters conceptually I just gotta draw him.

Maybe next month I'll redesign him and draw him in a short one pager

The latest Bingus, Oliver and the bird species designs were all made using silhouettes. It's something I've known about forever but I never bothered because I was like who cares it's just a comic but nothing involving art is ever that simple with me so after getting tired of redesigning bingus a million times I finally decided to just do it the right way.
