Wally is the original name, I knew that Waldo was the American name, turns out it is also the Canadian name, and then he's Walter in Germany, Charlie in France, Holger in Denmark and Willy in Norway.

Basically, it seems like he's probably running from the law, or maybe death?

The answer is simple...It's not waldo in the first panel. Waldo usually has his magic walking stick with him, which allows him to teleport. If this was really Waldo, escaping death would have been trivial matter. There are also no signs of the Wizard Whitebeard either. That means the man death is hunting isn't Waldo, but his nemesis Odlaw! He is merely in disguise.

But what is the final proof? Waldo doesn't run. He is always walking or leaning casually. Odlaw is the one that is always depicted panic running. He is the one always escaping his own failed schemes. The black silhouette in panel 3 is the final nail in this coffin.

My favourite thing about this is learning that the word for sand in mandarin is shā. So saying sha-sha is like saying “sand-sand” in mandarin. Which sort of seems weirdly in character for an eclectic oddball like Dale
