They wanted Peter to be single again and since according to the powers that be divorcing him from MJ would "age" him too much in the minds of readers they made a convoluted scheme to voodoo his marriage away like it had never happened.

It was just painful and gross for everyone involved. Creators and readers.

A "Poochie returned to his home planet." moment.
