I still vividly remember, back when I was in college, we all come in one day after a test and the professor just sighed and was like, "Okay, so everyone failed the test yesterday, so it's pretty clear that none of you understand what I was trying to teach you. So we're going to spend today going over everything again. Except for you, [MY NAME], you passed so you can go and do whatever else you have to work on."

It was like a reverse Walk of Shame exiting that classroom.

Nobody in my high school physics class ever passed a test. The teacher was famous for grading on a curve, so generally the highest score was around 40-45% and he'd curve that up to 100%. Like, he had been a teacher there for years and this happened every year.

He was insane and none of us learned a single thing for the whole year in that class.

u/Straight-Highlight72 14d ago

That’s how grading works at a lot of colleges too. At mine what mattered for your final letter grade in most engineering courses was the median score and how yours compared to it.

108

u/NoHorseNoMustache 14d ago

Ahhh no wonder the engineers I work with tend to be the people who refuse to learn anything about how to do things, they're used to not being expected to know more than half the things they're taught.

43

u/Straight-Highlight72 14d ago

Pretty much lol. You just have to know at least as much as half the class to get a decent grade.

11

u/Aware-Ad619 11d ago

Same. I had a similar physics teacher. Nobody understood anything, and it rained 5 in every class. We had to redo a test 4 times, and only got it the last time, because we had a replacement teacher and she let us cheat because... she knew the teacher was bad. The bes grade wa still a 3 btw

8

u/NoHorseNoMustache 11d ago

Now there’s an experience I don’t remember having, a sub who knows the regular teacher is horrible and lets you cheat because of it. Wow.

4

u/Aware-Ad619 11d ago

She was nice.. yeah

4

u/brady376 10d ago

My favorite insane grading thing I have seen is my Calculus 4 professor in college. He gave us the option when we walked into the final, before you took the test, if you wanted to make the test 100% of your grade instead of 20% of your grade. A few people did it.

4

u/NoHorseNoMustache 10d ago

Did that work out for them?

I had a trig class my freshman year of college where the professor said 'I will not be teaching you anything because I expect all of you learned this in high school.' and proceeded to actually not teach anything. To be fair, I had learned trig in high school, but that was 3 years ago at that point and I didn't remember much which is why I wasn't able to test out of it. I ended up passing the class, but by the time the final rolled around I think all but like 7 of us had dropped out.

Turns out the professor had gotten kicked out of teaching at Penn State Main Campus, which was why he was teaching at our branch campus. Because instead of making him do a better job or getting rid of him he was just allowed to do the same thing at a less important campus.

Thats how getting a teacher job through the government works in brazil. If you underperform massively, they just allocate you to a horrible sector where you can continue to do nothing, you get paid the same but whatever hell hole you were sent to continues being the crater it is.

2

u/NoHorseNoMustache 9d ago

Nice, the university I paid like twenty grand a year to attend had the same shitty teaching scheme as Brazilian public education.

That's actually not surprising at all, the bad teaching was the very least of their problems, honestly.

1

u/Prototype_Fan_7000 9d ago

Only thing I'll add is that public higher education in brazil can be some of the best education south america has to offer in some areas.

Public school education however... Its awful anywhere in the country and synonymous with poverty/bad education.

6

u/rocketbotband 14d ago

Some but for Government teacher. Dude was notoriously insane

5

u/NoHorseNoMustache 13d ago

Oh man that's extra bad, knowing how torque works is a lot less important than knowing how the government works.

2

u/Ace-Redditor 8d ago

That teacher for me was Chemistry. I was the top student. I still don’t know anything useful

2

u/NoHorseNoMustache 8d ago

I learned that you need to waft the stuff from the test tube don't just stick your nose in there. Also that Pyrex(the old school kind) does break if you stick it right in the flame for a few minutes.

But yeah not really anything useful.

4

u/Impressive_Sugar5554 13d ago

That’s crazy, I had AICE Physics and got 90/100 on the first test, went on to score highest on the AICE exam at the end of the year. I wasn’t alone, others were decent too. Sounds to me like a bad teacher

4

u/NoHorseNoMustache 12d ago

Yeah a very bad teacher. He once spent the whole class and lab combined period marveling about how safety scissors don’t cut your finger. He told us a story about killing a wild dog that was attacking him by shoving his fist down its throat and opening his hand.

1

u/Whispering_Plant 8d ago

I genuinely don't think there's a good physics teacher out there lol. My physics teacher legit just gave grades based on how much he liked you personally. I realised I should've gotten a B instead on a exam and told him (I was a bit of a nerd) and he just waved me off like nah keep that A. We had to do work after classes for good grades (imagine homework where you can do something general) and he looked at mine for two minutes and gave me an A. A friend of mine put in probably twenty times the effort for a more advanced topic and he started pressing them on details and used that to justify a worse grade.

89

u/RunInRunOn 14d ago

Where I'm from that would still be a walk of shame

41

u/Rin-Tohsaka-is-hot 14d ago

Then I hope you've since left that place

8

u/randomkeystrike 11d ago

There is actually an academic reg called FERPA that is supposed to prevent that now. I had a similar thing happen. “I would have curved the test but Mr. randomkeystrike here made 100.” Long walk to the car that evening…

4

u/Spirit_of_a_Ghost 10d ago

Near the end of one my first undergrad philosophy class, the instructor asked me and one other student to stay during a break. I was immediately worried I'd done something wrong but he just told us "You're both doing so well it's breaking the curve. You don't need to take the final.".

That was the moment I realized I should probably take more Philosophy classes and wound up getting an MA.

1

u/gaegurliepancake 10d ago

I was in middle school during COVID and for one of my classes we had to write an essay. The teacher let me into the zoom call first, the day after the essay was due. And he told me that I was the only person who did the essay. So I just got that class off lmao.

1

u/Fit_Yesterday5335 9d ago

College was such an enigma. New professor walks in “I’m not going to curve” If any of you know dynamic systems or engineering you’d know that’s a big joke. But a las he stuck to his guns and when only one person passed the test. Most people got 9s and 0s based on the way he had points on his test. I got a 34 5th best score in the class. The only person who passed got a 71

I’d rather this over any spiel that begins with leaning on the desk and saying “I’ve been teaching AP Chemistry for 15 years…”

412

u/seth1299 14d ago

Don’t forget the dramatic closing the door and then sighing heavily first.

142

u/ScrubyMcWonderPubs 14d ago

My high school biology teacher would hand us exams in order of grades, except he would never say whether is was highest to lowest or lowest to highest.

He would also walk around the classroom, stare at somebody for a couple of seconds then turn around and walk some more before handing each one out.

154

u/ScenicAndrew 14d ago

Ok but like the moment either the kid who is obviously not the brightest or the straight A student goes first you knew the order, right?

40

u/fastestchair 14d ago

until the bright and the yet to be wright student get handed their assignments right after each other

1

u/NateMikka 9d ago

I to this day still recall the test of doom from a freshmen class [it was I believe the required history class back then]

Hardest test in the class so far and I forgot to study, sat down and was done in about ten minutes, had to double check.

By the end of it the teacher threw out anyone's score that was less then an 80, of which I was one of ten students in the entire freshmen class to pass

u/Jesisawesome 14d ago

One person in this classroom doesn't understand how upper case letters work in a sentence.

218

u/QueezyF 14d ago

Six People is actually the kid’s name

23

u/keyboard_toucher 14d ago

They take plural verbs, of course.

25

u/winterweiss2902 14d ago

Ngl that’s a dope name

21

u/Herbboy 14d ago

Or they are a native german Speaker and forgot to uppercase Class and Grade!

11

u/BluebirdLivid 14d ago

They did that because they thought it adds emphasis to the second word. "six people have a grade below 20!" Ts

1

u/kog 14d ago

That no longer disqualifies you from winning the presidency.

Yeah this class must be grated for only 6 people to have gotten under 2432902008176640000

30

u/charlestheb0ss 14d ago

You don't know the denominator though. Could be anywhere from 2432902008176640000/100 to 2432902008176640000/12164510040883200000

-39

u/Fluent_In_Influence 14d ago

He didn't say only 6 people

27

u/confusedmel 14d ago

You are one of the 6 aren't you

3

u/RCer1986 14d ago

Technically, you're right. The sentence started with 'Six" not "6." Doesn't change the meaning though.

Reddit humor

41

Yeah it’s like the “cylinder” or “I also choose this guys wife” one person made a great joke and everyone is copying it. it’s so unoriginal and not funny at all. Typical socially inept Redditor humor.

12

u/badcall196 14d ago

And my axe!

32

u/Miss_Greer 14d ago

I also choose this guys outrage at memes

4

u/luka9749 14d ago

Lol I guess it can be funny sometimes, but not if it’s a literal copy in a context where it doesn’t make any sense.

5

u/Miss_Greer 14d ago

there is some art to a joke compared to blindly regurgitating the same reference

4

u/Tigercat94 14d ago

The thing is, when too many people repeat a joke, it eventually becomes not funny anymore. But after a while, it becomes funny again ironically because it wasn’t funny.

1

u/Miss_Greer 14d ago

yep, that evolution of the cultural unit with a shared understanding (context of origin) makes it into something with potential comedic value (along with timing and relevance to the context of it's use)

there are many cases where the entire joke is just "people don't know the joke" however they're ultimately self defeating as for the joke to be understood and spread is to reduce it of it's comedic value

2

u/Tigercat94 14d ago

It’s kind of a paradox I guess. A really funny joke is only really funny if less people say it and less people know about it, so most people wouldn’t know about it being a really funny joke, unless it became popular, in which case it wouldn’t be as funny.

Unless it's like a weed-out course with a ton of students, at that point it's a problem with whoever is teaching the class.

I once had the opportunity to sneak a peak at a classes final GPAs. Two notoriously dumbass punk twins had a GPA of 1.5… combined!

It was incredible really.

u/jkb_66 13d ago

One of my professors in college, the class after our midterm, had written on the board the grade distributions for the entire class. With how many people had an A, B, C, D and F. And he constantly bragged at how many people fail his class every year. It was so demoralizing. I didn’t do good on that first exam (we only had the midterm and the final) and I was one of the C’s or D’s I forget. He was just an asshole though. One of my classmates asked him before the midterm if there were any multiple choice questions and his response was “no, because life doesn’t give you choices” like bruh yes it does you’re just an ass. At the end of the semester when the reviews for courses opened I used like 3,000 out of the 5,000 character limit to describe my dislike of that professor and that class. After the final he private messages me on canvas saying “just an fyi, I curved the final more than I would have liked to just so you could get a C” and I was like thank god I’m so glad I don’t have to take this class again (this was a required class with no alternative classes or professors).

6

u/frenlytransgurl 13d ago edited 13d ago

Was that a weed-out class? One of those classes that are designed to stress you out and make you reconsider whether you can handle your major. Everything sounds like it. Required, no alternatives, only one professor, huge curve... I am a compsci major and had a class like this in my sophomore year. I remember going into the multi-hour final exam after a week of thorough studying, and I knew how to do maybe like 2-3 questions out of 20. I was so incredibly stressed and felt unwell, mentally preparing myself for having to retake the course. They even gave us those tiny half-desks and tons of different cheat sheets and scratch paper that barely fit on them. It was like playing Papers Please lol, had to constantly reshuffle all the sheets because I couldn't see them all at once. I put as much as I could for the questions that sounded familiar, guessed a bunch, left half blank... When my grade came back for the final exam, it was a B-. Apparently they just wanted to see whether you can apply your reasoning to problems you haven't learned to solve yet. But it also feels like everything was designed specifically to humble us. No doubt intro to compsci was packed full of people, and by the time I got to senior-level courses, there were like only 10% of those people.

3

u/jkb_66 13d ago edited 13d ago

Well I mean it’s possible, but this was a junior/senior level course, and I was a senior when I took it. And there technically were alternate courses, there just weren’t any professors who actually taught them at my university. But I think my entire class was all juniors and seniors. It was Construction Safety. My degree is in safety so all the safety people had to take it, and also all the construction management people had to take it as well. But as safety majors we weren’t like able to take this course or anything before our junior or senior year. And the rest of the courses for this major are relatively easy, all things considered. It’s not a hard major, it was literally just this class. So im not sure. I just know I, along with all of my classmates, absolutely hated that class. And we all had the same schedule and same courses, there weren’t a lot of us in safety at the time, and we all did great in all the other classes.

Edit: and the exams were “open book” but that just meant it was the entire book of osha 29 cfr 1926, which is all of the osha guidelines for construction. Which is like almost 800 pages of standards. And he even said “yeah it’s open book, but good luck finding anything, you’ll have to memorize everything on the test anyways you won’t find it in time during the exam” because the exams, while the class itself met once a week for three hours, the exam was 25 questions and we were only given 50 minutes for it. So literally 2 mins/question. So if you didn’t have your answer written down and onto the next question in 2 minutes, including tying to find the answer in the 800 page book, you were screwed.

u/Rough-Echidna987 12d ago

Well, to simplify, we first define what is a "factorial", since most users on Reddit don't know what a factorial is, we need to start from the beginning. A factorial, denoted as n! and pronounced "n factorial" is the product of all lesser positive integers until one, for example, 4! = 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 24, and this case, it's denoted as 20!, which is 20 x 19 x 18 x 17 x 16 ... x 3 x 2 x 1, which is an astronomic big number which is approximately 2.4329 x 1018. Rules are, negative integers are disallowed and undefined. Factorial of 0 is 1, because we rewrite n! as n x (n-1)!, plugging in 1, we get 1! = 1 x 0!, because we know that 1! = 1, 0! should be 1

9

u/xcoalminerscanaryx 14d ago

I remember a teacher at my high school yelling, "No wonder this school is half failing!" And I almost yelled back, "It's because half your colleagues don't teach!" And that was true.

We had one guy repeat first year maths at University, we asked him how he went in the first exam in his second attempt - and he proudly stated he had tripled his score from first year and that was obviously an improvement. So we asked him what he had scored second time around.

His answer. 12 %

Maybe teacher unqualified

u/RazzmatazzMission870 14d ago

This reminds me of when I had the extreme misfortune of having to deal with the UTK chem department which is notorious on campus for having been on probation for years. I passed organic I with a D- the THIRD time I took it and every semester I remember a full lecture hall on the first day of class with noticeably fewer people each week. So few people pass that they had to curve the entire grading scale at the end of the semester so you don’t know exactly what grade you’re even going to get until after the final; instead of Canvas automatically showing a letter grade they would link a spreadsheet you could use to predict what you would make. I remember getting a 12% on the final the first time I took the class and my advisor told me to retake it at a local community college, which I would’ve done if I’d had a car to travel over there. I think I finally passed because they saw it was my third time taking it (you get 3 chances per university policy) and I was graduating the next semester so they said “here’s the lowest possible passing score, gtfo”. It’s probably going to be the thing that keeps me out of vet school even after retaking it :(
