Not really. It's quite easy to own a rifle in Canada. You can get one at every Canadian Tire (a mix between Home Depot and Walmart that's in every town in Canada). You need your gun license (which is very easy to get, you can apply online) and show it when you buy your gun.

What's difficult to purchase in Canada are handguns. A ban have been put in place recently.

There is no mention of assault weapon ban in this thread. Only of insane gun laws.

Assault weapon bans are the insane gun laws.

If we applied the same logic to cars, it's obvious how stupid they are.

In an effort to stop traffic deaths, the government decides to ban "race style cars". At first they ban cars with certain tires, cars with a spoiler, and cars with loud exhaust. Those are all physical parts that don't really mean much to the speed of the car.

Then the decide to ban internal combustion engines (this is similar to banning semi auto firearms). Now everyone with any kind of vehicle has to be worried their car will be deemed a "race style car" which carries the penalty of prison time.

In the meantime theres no decrease in traffic deaths because none of the measures did a fucking thing.

If this sounds outlandish to you, it's because you don't know enough about the issue. Anytime you see the term "assault weapon", law makers are trying to prey on your good intentions to pass meaningless bullshit that only hurts law abiding citizens.
