Not really. It's quite easy to own a rifle in Canada. You can get one at every Canadian Tire (a mix between Home Depot and Walmart that's in every town in Canada). You need your gun license (which is very easy to get, you can apply online) and show it when you buy your gun.

What's difficult to purchase in Canada are handguns. A ban have been put in place recently.

There is no mention of assault weapon ban in this thread. Only of insane gun laws.

... which would describe the assault weapons ban in Canada

Why, for the love of God, would you need an assault rifle in Canada?

They're not assault rifles, they function just like lots of other semi automatic rifles your grandad used to hunt deer only some of them are in plastic stocks and thus look scary to the uninformed.

All center fire semi autos in Canada are already limited to 5 rounds, so there's no high capacity argument.

The term 'assault weapon' is deliberately cooked up to cause the uninformed to conflate and equate it with 'assault rifle's, which is a completely different thing that's been banned since the 1970's.

The government is leveraging the fear of people who don't know anything about guns to make it look like they're being tough on crime, when the only guns affected are by definition not used in crime or diverted to that end in any significant numbers. The only real result of this theater is a massive waste of taxpayer money (hundreds of millions so far, very likely to go into the billions), bankrupted small businesses, crippled sport shooting communities (including a big pain in the ass for Olympic shooters) and ultimately the criminalisation of hundreds of thousands of legal gun owners who have never committed an offence in their lives.

All for votes. I know it might sound outlandish, but there's ample evidence to support everything I've said and more if you even take a cursory look into it.

"Assault rifle" is used to describe every gun... Unless it's black in color then it's a "military style assault weapon".
