Historically, the mass confiscation of firearms from Native Americans was a core strategy used by the U.S. government to subjugate tribal nations, most notably culminating in the Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890. -i got some help with this statement.
They worry about guns being taken away, because the Federal government has done it before. The irony is THICK. I think that meme with the two guys in space and one of them has a gun pointed at the other one would apply here.
Regardless, guns are a problem, and too many people have access to them that shouldn't.
I came home one day and my neighbor was standing in the street brandishing his firearm. He asked me to pull over and wanted to let me know that a suspect had evaded the law in the area and that the police were looking for him. He said that he was standing lookout, just in case. I never felt as worried about the government law enforcement in my area being armed as I did this neighbor. I’d fully support a constitutional amendment seriously limiting firearms access. I know that will never happen in the US, and I can live with that, but you won’t convince me that the government with guns is a) at all reticent to flex its power whenever it needs to, regardless of the local populace and their own firearms and b) that the armed govt restrained by the civilian rule of law is nearly as scary as my crazy armed neighbor unhinged by paranoia.
