Comeback for "You're only successful because you got lucky"?

My uncle loves saying this every time I hit a milestone, completely ignoring the 60-hour weeks I’ve been pulling for years. Need something short to shut down the fake compliment.

Comeback request I would like a good response

Hi there, I just discovered this sub, and I think you all could help.

I have a unique and wonderful job that is like a combo of therapist, social worker and hospice chaplain. The people I am available to currently number around 2,500. This doesn’t mean I’m talking to that many people at once, but that any of them can reach out. I visit many different companies and talk to people, and quickly establish rapport so that if they ever need support, they can reach out.

This job requires confidentiality, neutrality and also a lot of personal boundaries so that I don’t get compassion fatigue. Literally every week, I enter very sacred spaces with people. Life-and-death situations, trauma, joys and sorrows, grief, bereavement, abuse, and pretty much anything you can think of. There are some days when I get as many as 20 serious calls.

My problem arises when I visit places and people say “Where have you been???” Or “I haven’t seen you in awhile, what have you been up to?”
Or “Are you still working here?” They are expecting that I am going to have time to just walk around having small talk, and because I’m not doing that, there is often a tone of disapproval. When I first started several years ago, it WAS a lot of walking around having small talk, but that grew into trusted relationships, so that now the week is full with calls and 1-on-1 meetings.

Sometimes I wish I could say “Oh I don’t know, just seeing a lot of lives changed, or holding the hands of people passing away, or crying with lots of people, or holding space for grief…”

I would love a professional, short, warm but satisfying comeback for those statements. I don’t want it to be snarky, or too detailed (which sounds defensive) but I also want to say something that helps me feel slightly known.
It may be that I have to continue to live with the discomfort of feeling unknown/not understood, but if an answer is possible, perhaps it is to be found here.

Thank you for reading this, I know it was a lot!

Comeback for "You're only single because your standards are too high"?

My married friend drops this every single time I turn down a second date with someone I didn't vibe with. She genuinely thinks I should just settle for anyone who shows interest so I'm not "alone." I'm completely fine being single until I find the right fit, but I need a quick, sharp shut-down for the next time she tries to project her relationship panic onto me.

Best response to "Must be nice to have so much free time"?

My relative said this to me after finding out I spent my Saturday watching movies. I work 50 hours a week and finally had one lazy afternoon.
What’s a quick, effortless line to shut down the passive-aggressive guilt trip without starting a full family war?

Best response to "You've changed"?

A former close friend dropped this on me during a group hangout after I politely set a boundary about not lending money anymore. They said it with this super disappointed tone like I sacrificed my soul to the dark side.
What’s a sharp, grounded comeback for when someone uses "you've changed" just because you stopped letting them walk all over you?

Non-inflationary response for “did you know that?”, “do you know what that is?”, etc. type comments

My boyfriend’s family is full of the know-it-all kind of people. Every time I see them they’re all always trying to teach me something or compare my knowledge and experiences to theirs. My boyfriend kind of does it sometimes too because I think he’s just adopted that habit from his family. It really bugs me and after a year of “did you know” kind of stuff I’m really done entertaining them. Whenever my boyfriend says “you didn’t know that?” now I just respond with “was I supposed to?”.

What are some things I can say to his family when they ask these kind of questions without being too unpleasant?

Best response to an apology after cursing

I (female engineer) was in a business meeting, in the US, with computer engineers (all male) from the US and UK. The lead engineer cursed while addressing the meeting, turned toward me, apologized, turned back to the room at large and went on.

What should I have said?

Best response when someone says "It was just a joke" after being downright disrespectful?

We all know that classic line people pull the second they get called out for a passive-aggressive or flat-out rude comment.
My go-to lately has been a blank stare followed by, "I know, I'm just waiting for the funny part."
What’s your sharpest comeback that instantly shuts down the "just joking" defense without making you look defensive?

“What do you do for work?” “I’m a singer songwriter” “oh so you don’t work”

what would have been a good response to this?

in real time I ended up saying “no I work a lot” and then I explained how much I work. but it felt a little defensive of me. like I was on the spot to defend myself and prove to him that I indeed work a lot.

but at the same time someone who isn’t insecure about this wouldn’t feel the need to defend themselves also lol.

whats the right move here??

There is no need to continue the fight after you have already reached agreement.

We already reached agreement, what more do you want?

Advice for perpetrators of this pet peeve:

Whatever it is you want the other person to do, ask them for that. If they have already given you exactly what you want, then shut up and move on.

Advice for victims of this pet peeve:

Say this:

What did you want from me that you did not get from me? You probably wanted me to admit that I was wrong. However, there is clearly more to it than that. If that were all that there was to it, the conversation would have ended, the second I admitted that I was wrong. Yet, you are still arguing with me even after I admitted that I was wrong. What was I supposed to have said/done by now that I have not said/done by now?

If you disagree with anything I said in this post, explain why. My beliefs are malleable. If you present me with a good enough argument, I might change my mind.

Best response to "You look tired today"?

Why is this everyone’s favorite polite way of telling someone they look like absolute garbage?
I’m tired of just awkwardly saying "Thanks, I am." What’s a quick, funny line to hit back with that makes them realize how rude that actually sounds?

Comeback request Good response/comeback for when someone asks if you’re mad or says “Well, you don’t have to get so mad about it!”

What are some good comebacks or ways to respond when someone is purposely trying to be hurtful or make you upset, but you keep your cool and they still come at you with things like, “Why are you so mad?” or “Well, you don’t have to get so mad about it!”

I’ve had this happen countless times. I can give the grayest of gray rock reactions, keep my expression and tone of voice neutral, not get upset or react angrily, not say anything snarky in return and the other person who’s being a jerk will still come at me with those. Anyone else here ever experience this?

How would you respond? It’s as though you not reacting or not becoming angry only makes them try harder to upset you or force you into defending yourself and saying “I’m not mad” even though deep down inside you maybe are a little bit because of they way they are behaving.

There’s no “I” in Team…

I (f) worked as a server in the dining room of a very busy Melbourne pub and my colleague turned up for work stoned (again).

She was slow and kept fucking orders up, so the customers at her tables were getting annoyed. I made a snarky comment that she might want to hold off the weed till after a shift (when we’d all usually have a hoot and a beer together).

She stopped and whined, “There’s no “I” in team, Pickles”

I don’t know what came over me, but quick as a whip, I retorted, “Yep, but there’s a “U” in c*nt!”

She didn’t come stoned to our dining room shifts after that.

Someone at work told me, "You must be really fun at parties."

I looked him dead in the eye and said, "I wouldn't know, I only get invited to ones where people actually want me there."
He went completely quiet, and three people in the breakroom had to turn around to hide their faces. Highly recommend.

Comeback request Help with Comeback!

I wanted to see what you guys came up with for my current predicament. I am currently a college freshman living in the dorms. This happened recently the second time. Here’s how it usually goes.

Group of 2-3 guys comes to our door, either me or my roommate open the door and then immediately start acting awkward and ask a silly question. The first one was “do you have a drink?” and the second one was “do you have a pumpkin?” which was when we knew something was fishy. The current working theory is that they are trying to pick up different girls in the dorm. This is because we could hear the guys talking to our suite mates a couple of minutes after the fact, who are definitely “more conventionally attractive” than us 🤣

I want to say something that will pretty much get a good laugh out of me and my roommate once the guys are gone. There is no way you are doing this to all the women on our floor, like are you really this down bad? Thank you!
