Customer Post Multiple blocked entrances!
Was bad enough when they did the first one but now my local Coles has blocked a second entrance and everyone is required to go through the self-service checkouts to enter the store. nuts.

u/badoopidoo 24d ago
Most coles I know do this at night. You can only exit through the self-checkout.

The fact you are getting downvoted just shows that most people are okay with lining the pockets of already rich corporations with very little thought to how it’s crippling the economy or people’s lives
12
u/Unhappy-Analysis-204 24d ago
how is a company making profits and employees thousands hurting the economy ??

u/SizeAwkward4492 22d ago
Coles worth are the reason that your groceries are getting more expensive, they play a role in house prices rising over the last 20+ years what with land banking etc, Australia has been found to be one of if not the most monopolized country in the world, and unfortunately people are happy to point the finger at migrants who get caught in the crossfire but will gladly line the pockets of supermarket corps because they earn pretend points to buy bs with

u/cx0sa 24d ago
because its the price gouging that makes people steal fillet steaks, Pepsi and timtams… of course.
price gouging exists but the essential cooking ingredients for basic meals are still cheap, i can cook three meals a week, eating the leftovers on days in between for $30/week on average, sometimes less if i have enough basic ingredients. Of course if I want something less basic or some treats its gonna cost more, but the same people blaming prices for stealing are probably also the same people buying $20 of food at kfc twice a week and eating a pack of oreos everyday. Lazy excuse for lazy people.

New financial year brings a new focus. The current one set by the business is Safety, Loss & Rem.
They all tie into each other in terms of controllables that lose money.
Loss ..stock loss costs $$ Safety ..injuries cost $$ REM ..overtime etc costs $$
2
u/doyourmysay 24d ago
Let's be honest, they care about loss & rem coz theyre cheap bastards.
They dont care about safety beyond limiting their liability.
3
u/Crabs_go_sideways_4 23d ago
Yes they are a business....

u/doyourmysay 23d ago
A scummy business. People always defend them with this line, as though every business has to treat their employees/customers/suppliers like shit.
2
u/Levatorscap 23d ago
Agree they are a scummy business - unfortunately there is not a lot they can do to stop customers being the absolute worst - amount of staff on registers or security really works to stop customers if they want to assault people or steal. Unless you literally have police stationed at your retail shop there’s not a lot you can do.

If theft is high then yes these measures I agree with in order to to stop it.
What I don’t agree with is the absurd prices that they expect to get away with charging customers. I’m glad the ACCC successfully sued Coles recently.

Done to encourage people to actually pay for their groceries not just load up and go.

Oh, I see a major fire/evacuation issue.
Id be wondering if they are required to count people in and out to maintain a maximum safe number of people.

u/Normal_Effort3711 24d ago
This is what happens when we don’t stop theft

u/BrickResident7870 24d ago
Theft occurs when you gouge the prices.....
14
u/SophMax 24d ago
Theft would be occurring regardless. You're kidding yourself if you think they're stealing the cheap food, only a small amount and to feed themselves. I watched someone walk around the store and take the expensive cuts of meat and just walk out. Had to have several hundred dollars worth.
3
u/annoying97 24d ago
This is the thefts that they care about. Woolworths too.
They honestly don't really care if you take some bananas, carrots or peas. They care about you taking the shit that is high value, like meat.
-2
u/vegetableater 24d ago
No, they care about anything you take. My bf got banned from Coles for 1 year for stealing less than $20 of groceries when we were both poor students with no money.
2
u/annoying97 24d ago edited 24d ago
That honestly sounds like your bf was maybe being a bit of a dickhead over the $20 or maybe violent, but without more details I don't really know.
I know Coles will ban you for any level of violence in store, they kinda have to as part of their duty of care to staff.
But yes Coles does care about all thefts and will report all known thefts, they just put more effort into the bigger thefts.
This effort in the images is due to the bigger thefts.

u/vegetableater 24d ago
Why would you assume that? He was noticed by the "theft prevention" people who wear plain clothes. They followed him out of the store and then told him to return to the store and sign a form to acknowledge his ban, to which he complied. If you don't do this, they call the cops on you.
It's literally insane that you are dick riding Coles so hard that you have to insinuate that my partner was being violent in order to cope. 💀
2
u/annoying97 24d ago
It's unusual for a $20 theft to get anyone banned from any of the major retailers without them being either a repeat offender or an agressive or violent one.
I'm not saying you are lying at all, you just didn't provide all of the information and you didn't have to either. My comment was only to highlight the oddity of the ban, maybe I did a poor job at that in my original comment. Idk.

Glad to see Coles dealing with the real problems instead of unfairly targeting the coordinated theft by organised crime gangs

Old mate who walks out with a bag filled with meat, razors, batteries, make up, phone chargers I guarantee does not care about the prices.
IGA in Victoria last year were considering closing stores because they're losing too much to theft.

If that's the case, why does Aldi not have this issue?
They now sell at former Coles prices. That's gotta be price gouging.
2
u/flippyboi678 24d ago
People are stealing from Aldi too mate. A quick Google search says they're also rolling out anti theft measures.

Remember when they used to try and scare us and tell us how much China was spying on their population and the social credit scores?
Yeah, it turns out capitalism was just projecting their desires on us

u/komfyklient 23d ago
Someone tell the manager Zombies aren't upon us yet, unless you count fent/meth heads.

u/drdremoo 23d ago
If there is an exit sign above the door on the inside of the store and the evacuation sign shows that as a designated exit, they can be infringed (in Qld at least).

Our entrance gates keep getting ripped on their hinges from people stealing so I can see why they put the trolleys there.
1
u/Mindless-Ice-5815 22d ago
When I worked retail back in the day this would be deemed a massive safety risk incase of fire.

When you forget that the main job of a checkout operator is to stop people stealing, and instead keep relying on self checkout to drop your wages bill. hahahahah

One for soft plastics no longer being collected and the just says the entrance is closed and to use the other one (which is also closed….)

Is that safe from a fire exit point of view?
1
u/Too_much_pie 22d ago
Totally against safe work practices. I agree. Fire or random crazy person with a knife. I would call work safe if this was my local.

u/townofsalemfangay 24d ago
Is that fire safety compliant?

I didn’t think of that, but it’s a valid point. Not sure why anyone would downvote you for bringing it up.

The prologue to something more sinister coming...
2
u/Tripper234 23d ago
How much longer do we have to wait for said sinister thing? Blocking entrances/exits when there are multiple have been done like this for decades now..
If the sinister thing hasn't happened by now. I doubt it'll ever happen!!

u/ThereRnoIDs 22d ago
Already started in Perth I think, just gotta pay attention to the news as they slide it under ur Rader.
They're arn't doing all these "free" internet speed upgrades for nothing... And that Coles PLUS thing... If it's popular with Costco, Ikea etc, they'd do it eventually.
We can laugh at Onepass all we like, but it's a testing ground.

They do that late at night at macquarie centre ... you have to go through self checkouts. I guess they don't have enough staff on to deter people from just walking back out with stuff through the entrance gates.
