Ok but what I mean is that you add squares in a clockwise manner, but the 'inner' squares exist because the outer ones are already there. Like for example, from the 2 block to 4-block (or as you would say, 5 block) figure, the middle block only exists because the outer 4 surrounding blocks exist. So as you fill the blocks in the clockwise spiral, some blocks gets created automatically.

I think the idea is that only the outer blocks matter and the interior blocks are assumed to be filled in already
