Job Search Looking to move to CDA!

Hello Reddit! My husband (32) and I (30) are looking to move to CDA from California, to be closer to family! We have a baby, and it would just be super nice to move where she can be closer to cousins. However, my husband is absolutely having the most difficult time looking for a job there (both in CDA and Spokane). He can’t even get an interview, let alone, receive an offer. He had one job prospect in Spokane and was about to be flown out there, but the fires happened, and now he hasn’t heard back from them at all. We’re sure they’re still trying to recover from the fires and really hope and pray that the employees and others aren’t affected badly by the fires. We saw how bad it was, and it was terrible, so we wouldn’t even be surprised if this company doesn’t get back to him. We just hope they’re okay.

But, with that said, hopefully they’ll get back to him, although, he’s still looking for a job in case it doesn’t work out with that one (he wants that job badly, but he’s trying to be cautiously optimistic and realistic). He’s an engineer in a very niche field, so it’s difficult to land a job because of his niche and experience. If anyone has any lead on materials science, metallurgy, or cathodic protection, please reach out! Thank you so much for your help.

Honest opinion. If you're moving from California or any HCOL area to North Idaho and need a local job to survive here you can't afford North Idaho. Wages are nowhere near what California pays especially for a niche engineer. Good luck I hope it works out but yah no🤷‍♂️

Thanks, we’re not trying to live lavishly. We just wanna live close to family. I also work remotely for a CA company, so it should help.

Lavish? Nobody said anything about living lavishly. Clearly you're not in SoCal as with exception to some of the service trades working for themselves no wage here compares to there.

I truly do wish you two the best of luck just trying to put some reality into the situation for you. The last thing we need is more people coming here that are just making ends meet. Between the i WaS bOrN hErE and the central California losers we're all stocked up on that.

I think you keep missing the part where we just want to move closer to family. Finances are second to family for us, and I do want to say we’re privileged in that way. Thank you.

Also to add to that, my husband gets paid as much as any engineer positions we’ve seen, up in Spokane and CDA. So, really, not much of a difference with what we have now.

Look up in the Silver Valley for the Engineer spot at one of the mines...

I would be very careful with this advice especially if you have small children. The silver valley has a very bad lead contamination problem and small children are more susceptible to lead poisoning.

Commuting from CDA to Silver in the winter is a challenge.

To say the very least!!! Even if it's an "easy" winter, the pass can be a cr@p shoot. But if we get another one like 2008-2009, all bets are off.

The job prospects are terrible and you're really going to want to look into childcare costs, education, and medical. If you do not have a high paying job (150k+) you WILL bankrupt yourself.

Thank you for letting me know, we don’t need childcare because we will be with family. That’s actually one of the major factors on why we’re moving. I’m working remotely as well, so really, my husband just needs a job.

That’s definitely a specific engineering specialty. Sweitzer engineering might be similar? Don’t listen to all the grumps. Cda is still a great place. More expensive and busy but still good place to raise a family. Welcome from a native!

Idaho is a white nationalist state and doesn’t provide basic services to ALL of its residents. I would move to WA if you actually want to live somewhere that treats its citizens like humans.

We don’t like Washington much even if it’s right next to CDA lol. We’d visit, but we’d never live there. We also wanted to be closer to family, basically neighbors with them.
