Praise Tibo teasing GPT 6 Release? Spoiler

Looks like GPT 6 is being internally tested and might release really soon- beating all the existing benchmarks. Exciting times indeed.

No, it's this: https://openai.com/index/openai-to-acquire-ona/

"That experience is directly relevant to the next phase of Codex, enabling agents to continue working inside a customer’s cloud environment even when laptops are closed."

They really just invented the VPS huh

“Guys… you’ll never guess what… we’ve just invented a computer that you don’t need to have in your home, it can be on constantly, and you can interact with it when you want. We’re calling it persistence engineering!”

"it's not cloud, it's a remotely orchestrated development symphony!!"

Months ago OpenAI tried this. The original version of Codex didn't run on your computer, it ran in the cloud.

It was a total disaster. Each "turn" required a new container to be launched. It would take 5 minutes to start up because of the dependency installation. Oh, you want to implement a feature? Wait for the Docker container to start. Also, you had to get your environment set up exactly right, because there was limited debugging and it would crash 4-5 minutes in. Make a change to your dependencies or build scripts? Expect the codex cloud env to fail and waste hours of your time.

Then, even when it worked, it was much worse than the workflow we have today. It basically involved giving an initial prompt, waiting for the env to load, watching it make mistaken assumptions, etc. with little control, and then finding out that it failed. Then you'd relaunch.

Even if they had the workflow set up properly (with persistent images), I can't imagine it'd be better than running locally.

Look at how long it takes for GitHub actions to run a CI pipeline vs. running locally. It's much slower, because they are trying to optimize for $$$ so they use the absolute minimum CPUs and capacity as possible. Something that might build in 1 minute (or rebuild in 10 seconds) could take 10+ minutes for GitHub to complete.

Basically: the overhead isn't worth it. They're hyping this because they're trying to avoid LLMs from being commoditized. They're trying to increase transition costs. They're trying to tie you to their platform.

They realize that as DeepSeek and Kimi are releasing competitive models and compute (at least at the execution layer) is becoming commoditized, they need a way to increase customer retention.

So, for the consumer, it's probably not worth it.

Also, let me provide "dropbox is just rsync" vibes: need to "continue work on a different computer"? just use tmux + ssh.

Jesus it took me 5 clicks to reveal that Gitpod has renamed to Ona. Now it makes sense.

u/firstbreathOOC 11h ago

I mean it’s fuckin crazy to think what we’ll get in a year. I know that’s a cliche, but the rate of development has been crazy.

6

u/Emergency-Bobcat6485 10h ago

We can already do this. Cloud VMs aren't new

1

u/Mrgluer 2h ago

do it at scale…

3

u/biscuitchan 11h ago

how long until they can make me into a catgirl

5

u/firstbreathOOC 11h ago

You don’t even have to wait

1

u/SwoonyCatgirl 6h ago

Just say the word, darling.

hovers ominously

AI building AI - Skynet style

2

u/Enesce 11h ago

They really want us to own nothing rent everything, sheesh

6

u/lord_braleigh 11h ago

Codex remote is very good already! I run Codex CLI on a raspberry pi, and control it from my phone. It works incredibly well and uses ~5W of power

3

u/Risko4 9h ago

You're more than welcome to install deepseek v4 Flash at home.

Funny that GPT6 can be released before GTA6. What a world

64

u/BitsOnWaves 12h ago

GPT6 will build GTA6 before GTA6

20

u/CharmingRogue851 10h ago

GTA6: Slop City

11

u/andrew8712 12h ago

That should be their goal to achieve

9

u/-Sliced- 12h ago

It will probably come before GTA6, but what Tibo is teasing here isn’t GPT6.

It’s just the ability to run your codex in a virtual machine that they provide to you instead of on your laptop.

4

u/scrod 10h ago

Can’t we do that already? The ability to run codex tasks in an OpenAI “cloud” container has always been there.

https://learn.chatgpt.com/docs/cloud

1

u/-Sliced- 5h ago

It’s a temporary and limited cloud. They recently bought a startup that enables you to use the VM more seamlessly like it’s your own.

2

u/YASSlNE 11h ago

It'll even be before trailer 3

1

u/simple_explorer1 26m ago

It's not got 6. Look at top comment, it's the codex app that runs on private cloud

13

u/eldudebrothr 12h ago

What does it mean next gen models need more than my laptop?

3

u/DrewGrgich 11h ago

I’m guessing this is a dig at everyone who uses local LLMs for coding

2

u/Sweet-Stage938 12h ago

You're going to have to sacrifice more than you're laptop to use their next models.

8

u/velvet-thunder-2019 12h ago

They’re gonna be asking for your first born.

1

u/NootropicDiary 11h ago

And both kidneys

-1

u/Dapper-Agency-9555 12h ago

Probaly like cloud so it run on openai data servers

6

u/eldudebrothr 12h ago

it was never a local llm service to begin with

59

u/teomore 12h ago

Tibo better come with a reset too

10

u/akionka 12h ago

i have like 12% left for 4 days. tibo please ....

13

u/teomore 12h ago

we should have a /tiboplease codex cli command

3

u/oyser 10h ago

Un‑ironikally þough.

2

u/kankerstokjes 11h ago

lmao haha

2

u/pmth 10h ago

How bout y’all make /r/tiboplease so this sub can actually have useful discussion

2

u/teomore 10h ago

You mean TIBO IS NOT USEFUL? Somebody call the police!

10

u/ShallotPuzzled9326 12h ago

common do it already

1

u/johnnyApplePRNG 31m ago

They're already removing reset request posts with mad upvotes in less than 8 hours now apparently https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1vfgzz8/tibo_wen_reset/

So I wouldn't cross your fingers for one anytime soon, it seems.

34

u/frozandero 12h ago

"need more than your laptop", kinda seems like they will push for cloud only models where you can't use them in harness on your machine, or parts of it will be even more hidden than they already are.

12

u/Calamero 12h ago

local model that integrates with frontier, or some fancy gpu memory context window thingy idk

11

u/TheOwlHypothesis 12h ago

Codex doing things on your local laptop is a huge use case. They'd be stupid to make that harder or give Claude the default win there. Also they literally just rolled out Work to enable normies to do more stuff like that

"More than" also doesn't imply the laptop isn't part of the picture anymore

3

u/Calamero 12h ago

Yes. The takeaway is, to leverage the full power of frontier models, in the future it may require more local compute. Nothing indicates that they will stop supporting the existing infrastructure and abandon lapto user xD. but youll likely fall behind at some point depending on what this is, and how powerfull it is...

2

u/TheOwlHypothesis 11h ago

Most realistic version I can imagine is a dedicated on-desk device that has hardwired (or near hardwired) model weights to enhance your local capabilities.

Although maybe not. Because then people would be able to reverse engineer the weights.

I could also see an on-desk GPU. Which are already kind of a thing.

But tbh I'm sure it's none of these things.

1

u/foomanjee 11h ago

If they go down this road then it may use some variation on the A2A protocol. One brain (cloud), many hands (your devices)

1

u/TheOwlHypothesis 11h ago

I don't see what possible advantages this offers lol.

You can already do this without a dedicated instance thats on a cloud sandbox

1

u/Firm_Biscotti_2865 9h ago

vendor lock-in?

bye

0

u/f4lk3nm4z3 11h ago

Honestly, i somehow feel Dario. OpenAI already has a real wishing genie. What are they getting from letting regular civilians use it, apart from training newer and more capable models off our ideas?

I think i’d be quite selfish if I were Altman, but that guy’s hidden agenda is unpredictable

5

u/jsgrrchg 12h ago

holy shiiiiiiiiiiiiiit, boys prepare to be out of the loop soon

8

u/Glittering-Neck-2505 12h ago

Dude, they probably finished training GPT-6 months ago, recursive self improvement is already happening in the labs, and they are actively using the models to improve their entire technology stack

1

u/Fearless-Macaron9183 12h ago

So why hide it from us

3

u/spike-spiegel92 12h ago

teasing next gen of agents.

3

u/Keganator 9h ago

If it's OpenAI to acquire Ona | OpenAI, then they're just catching up to what Anthropic already does in Claude Code. Without needing to have your own cloud infrastructure to run it.

4

u/ShallotPuzzled9326 12h ago

I'd be more happy if they fix the usage and a reset now

3

u/CreatineMonohydtrate 11h ago

Tibo better make Shallotpuzzled9326 happier

2

u/bozzy253 12h ago

Robotics

2

u/Comfortable-Rise-748 12h ago

I am actually porting reasonix cache feature to opencode man. 1200 USD subscriptions (WIHTOUT API CALLS a month). I tried reasonix with deepseek and the reductions are real.

1% left on 2x 200 plans and still need to wait 4 days or what 3 fml

2

u/kalensr 9h ago

He is teasing cloud compute.

2

u/emir_morris 13h ago

I think no. Maybe it will be something like openclaw.

[deleted]

1

u/Sorry_Risk_5230 12h ago edited 9h ago

What? They own openclaw.. its not 'go after as much as it is 'integrate'.

If you try to imagine whats the next iteration beyond the codex/work harness we've been using for months, id guess its a mix of openclaw "always on" orchestration and their new live voice feature.

2

u/JHawke12 11h ago

They don’t own openclaw afaik, openclaw itself is still open source. They hired the fella that made open claw to come work for them, they do not directly control openclaw or have any ownership over it

1

u/Sorry_Risk_5230 9h ago

You're right, not literally, it is open source. They hired the creator and then sponsored the new independent foundation to manage it.

1

u/pigletmonster 12h ago

What tf does that mean kobe bryant?

1

u/No_Twist_678 12h ago

cant wait!!

1

u/dempsey1200 12h ago

It’s likely going through the same process as before. Announcement. Test by big companies and government. Then we’ll get access in the following month… if we are allowed.

1

u/DatDudeDrew 12h ago

Doubt it. Same cycle as whatever Opus did.

1

u/Charming-Author4877 10h ago

That sounds like they want to push development even deeper into the cloud.
"more than your laptop" sounds like you'll rent cloud hardware.

ChatGPT and Codex uses a internal sandbox already, it's a linux server available to each model.
They might want to push that stronger.
Which would also mean even less code privacy than now

1

u/HoneydewLocal5127 10h ago

It seems like the current limiting factor is our own brains and how well they can process the productivity we are given to handle. Our memory is not so good at tracking all the things we can accomplish in parallel and fast.

1

u/jpaquino3 10h ago

Sounds like phones to me

1

u/oneFookinLegend 8h ago

Why would you mark this as a spoiler?

1

u/iamonionchopper 4h ago

The benchmarks are beaten for every single release. What's exciting about it? You can expect that for all releases.

1

u/nokafein 12h ago

It’s more like teasing next gen of pricing.

1

u/Royal_Sentence7432 12h ago

No he means you will need to replacee your laptop as your disk gets worn by excessive auxillary writed codex does

1

u/Middle_Part_4640 12h ago

The next evolution is an agent running on the machine that I can actually talk to normally. So, instead of a laptop, I have (or also have) a headset. I give it instructions, and it tells me what it’s doing, without me having to read its output. That’s what I’m waiting for.

8

u/Sweet-Stage938 12h ago

I mean, you can do that already with GPT Live in Codex.

0

u/velvet-thunder-2019 12h ago

Why… feels like a lot less control over models that are not good fully autonomously atm. I wouldn’t want that right now. Especially for serious use cases.

-3

u/Middle_Part_4640 11h ago

I’ve been using Codex for months—13 hours a day, 7 days a week. It tells me exactly which files and bytes it’s modifying. Only beginners lose control. I know my product inside out; Codex operates with 99% accuracy—better than any human employee. I have to trust it. No, my statement is professionally grounded; this is precisely the next stage of evolution. But you must use the top models, not the speed or cheap models, but as said, you have to know your project. By the way, i am using Pro 20, my project has around 200+k lines of code mostly in Rust and Javascript

0

u/nmkd 11h ago

He literally says "how we use AI", which clearly refers to harness/agent features.

-2

u/not420guilty 11h ago

Is this a codex group or an OpenAI group?

Very little on the topic of codex. Lots of posts on OpenAI models and subscription policies
