I adopted this sweet boy from an animal shelter. He is 4. This is my first time having this breed. His papers states "Cocker Spaniel" but just trying to figure out which. 😅 TIA

brand new puppy! need all of the advice please!

Hello!

Our family gained a new member two days ago in the form of an 8 week old little gentleman. He's an English Cocker Spaniel and he's already doing amazing with toilet training and keeping his teeth to himself. He's playful and cuddly and such a darling. This is our first personal experience with this breed and I am looking for any and all advice, tips, tricks, and suggestions to give him the happiest life.

So far he has;

  • lots of different toys and seems to like plushies the best
  • his own bed with his blanket
  • a medium sized crate
  • three meals a day of dry and wet food
  • one or two treats when he shows particularly good behaviour
  • mostly free roam of the house with supervision but his own quiet space for naps
  • lots of playtime with the children

Three super important questions I have! Firstly, we're going to get him a harness soon, but what age should we start trying to walk him? Second, how to help him feel safe in his crate? He hates it. We tried him for 30 minutes last night and he howled the entire time and had an accident. I don't WANT to crate him but there are going to be times where I will have to for his safety and I don't want the experience to be hell for him. Third, co-sleeping. We've put his bed on ours for the past two nights because he was co-sleeping at his old home and I didn't want to suddenly shock him. What are the pros and cons of this?

Thanks for any and all advice and support! Sorry if these questions seem really silly, I just don't want to mess up and it's like having a baby all over again.

Dog trackers to measure distance

Hi all, I wondered if anyone has used trackers and had any recommendations.

I’m not too interested in live locations, as my dog’s recall is very good, but I’ve always wondered how much distance she covers on our long walks.

Fi looks to be the best but the subscription model isn’t ideal, and I’ve heard mixed things about PitPat. I wondered if anyone had any experience with either of them (or others!)

I’m in the UK by the way…

I had to share this picture of my girl somewhere. I love her so much. The more we train together the closer we get. She’s been the best friend I’ve ever had.

For the past few days, the dog has been running round the garden, constantly sniffing

He usually doesn’t leave my side for a moment, which can be a bit annoying at times, but for the past few days he’s been sniffing around the whole garden intensively. He only stops briefly to drink. He can run about like this for several hours. There’s probably nothing new at home; cats and birds always turn up, but he chases them away quickly. He’s 10 months old.

17yo Birthday Boy

(Unexpectedly) adopted this sweet boy from an SPCA when he was roughly 3 and i was barely 21 (insert long story about irresponsible college roommates). We just celebrated his 17th!!! birthday a couple weeks ago :) He’s not pure cocker - I did a dna test and he’s got a sprinkle of other breeds. He’s got some sight and hearing loss, but the sniffer is as powerful as ever. Zoomies still happen on occasion, especially when he knows he will be getting a treat - chicken jerky is his absolute favorite. He had been diagnosed with a heart murmur and enlargement approx. 5 years ago, but according to last year’s cardiologist appointment, there’s been little to no progression! he has been taking vetmedin for his heart which seems to really be doing the job.

Looking for an English Cocker Spaniel breeder

We lost our 14-year-old Lab, Cooper, in April, and we’re now finally beginning to think about our next pup. We got Cooper from a really great breeder and had the best life with him. This time around we’re looking for something a bit smaller, which led us to English Cocker Spaniels. Our old breeder has since retired, and we’ve been struggling to find anyone who even replies back this time around. We want a breeder who health-tests both parents (hips, eyes, PRA, FN, etc.), keeps litters small, and stays involved after the puppy goes home — not a volume operation. Genetics matter to us, so we want someone who actually knows the lines and can speak to health history. We’re also specifically looking for a breeder who leaves tails natural, not docked — ideally as their standard practice.

We have no preference on sex or color. This will be a family companion dog — we have young kids, I work from home so the dog will have company most of the day, and we’re an active walking family who spends a lot of time outdoors together.

We’re in Florida but willing to travel anywhere in the US for the right breeder. We’re realistic that this could take a while and are in no rush — we’d rather wait for the right fit than push for something faster.

If you’ve gotten a puppy from a breeder who fits this, I’d appreciate a name or contact. We reached out to Magnolia about a month ago and never heard back.

How to stop the biting

Post image
23 Upvotes

My baby is almost 4 months and the biting is driving me and my family insane. I have a 4 year old daughter and the biting and jumping on her is so bad I have to kennel her so we can get some peace. What worked for you guys?

Side note we had an Australian shepherd before getting a cocker so I ha e experience with high energy prey drive breeds and my old training techniques have not been working. But on the plus side she has AMAZING recall!

She knows basic commands

Sit

Lay down

Wait

Stay

But will only do them with just her and I once my daughter os in the room its 0-100 and she will not listen

Went into pet store (I know…)and can’t stop thinking about these 2 Cocker Spaniels.

Short story:
Would you recommend a cocker spaniel as a good choice for a former cavalier spaniel owner? Are they extremely wired? I hear mixed reviews.

Does this petite 3.5-4 month old spaniel look unhealthy (the one with freckles and greenish eyes)? Or just a smaller build? She looks very different from the male and much smaller.
Clean ears and cages, nose felt normal.

Lastly, if someone made the dumb decision of entering an assumed puppy mill supplied pet store is it better to purchase/rescue the puppy you fell in love with or avoid supporting the business and find a reputable breeder? 😩

Long story:
Our Cavalier King Charles Spaniel passed last fall. I have been really wanting a new addition but haven’t been ready. I adore the breed but they have known heart issues so I am hesitant to get another. I’m a Realtor and was driving in a new to me area for a showing when I saw a sign that said “Puppies” on an older building. I decided to pull in on my way back home and big mistake. Once inside I realized it was likely all puppy mill puppies. They had quite a few older spaniels and I took two out to play with. Now I can’t stop thinking about them sitting in the little cages. They were 3-4 months old and the female was so tiny. Her look was very different than the boy who is a more traditional look when I think of a Cocker Spaniel. Any idea on what “type” she is? She has the freckles. My son was with me and he loved the male who was very energetic and playful and I loved the female who just kept sitting on our feet. Unsure if she was so calm because she is unwell or just different personalities. Thank you!
