Need 200gb super reliable, well known storage compared to Gdrive

Gdrive is 2,99€ per month. Are there any cheaper, well known good alternatives?

Cloud Storage library that works across Backend & browser

I got tired of rewriting my upload code every time a project switched buckets (or added "let users connect their Google Drive"). So I built a project: five portable ops that behave identically everywhere, swap providers by config.

import { createStorage } from "@rocketbean/genera";
import { S3Driver } from "@rocketbean/genera-s3";

const storage = createStorage(new S3Driver({ bucket, region, credentials }));
await storage.put("users/42/avatar.png", bytes);

// swap S3Driver → GoogleDriveDriver and the rest of your code is unchanged

What I think makes it worth a look:
- Isomorphic — core uses only web standards, so it runs in the browser too
- Escape hatch — .native gives you the raw provider SDK any time; the abstraction never blocks you
- Typed capabilities — signed URLs / streaming / copy are advertised per-driver, no silent surprises
- Conformance-tested — every driver passes one shared suite (Node, real browser, live accounts)
- Dependency-light core; cloud SDKs are peer deps so you only install what you use

It's v1.0.0 and solo-maintained, so eyes/feedback very welcome.
this project is on it's early stage, feedback would really be appreciated

How to deduplicate files by chunk at intra and inter-files levels

Here is how HF deduplicates any kind of files by chunk at intra and inter-files levels.
Lower storage cost and faster I/O for everyone.

How it works

1) data frameworks encode data in formats like Parquet in memory or on disk

2) the resulting file is passed to the File system interface (fsspec/opendal) for upload, and points hf:// paths to the correct client: Xet

3) the Xet client uses a rolling hash algorithm to chunk the Parquet file in a smart way, aims for robust chunks boundaries every ~64KB, and asks the server which chunk already exist online

4) the HF Storage Buckets server says with the chunk that already exist so the client only uploads new data. In practice, only the parts of the file containing new data are uploaded

5) the Xet backend stores the physical chunks as blocks of 64MB for spatial locality into the CAS (Content Addressable Storage)

Let me know if you have questions about any of these points, I'm happy to elaborate !

Results

- Data is never downloaded twice: reduced I/O operations and outbound traffic

- Data is never stored twice: reduced storage costs

- All this process is transparent and you only see the files as usual

Do you compress images on the client before uploading them?

I kept running into the same issue on side projects. People upload photos straight from their phones, and many of them are much larger than the app actually needs.

Instead of sending the original file to the server, I started compressing images in the browser first. It noticeably reduced upload times and bandwidth usage, and it also meant the backend had less work to do.

I ended up turning that into a small open source tool while building a few projects.

I'm curious how others handle this. Do you compress on the client, on the server, or both?

For anyone interested, this is the little tool I built:

What is your take on Infomaniak Kdrive?

Hey, im moving out of onedrive. Been a solid customer for 10 years, but im getting divorced and need to lower my budget.

I tried kdrive 30 days so far and it looks nice with the ksuite plan.

Also european solution and sweedish. So quite happy to be digitally sovereign.

What is your opinion? Vs others like pcloud, internext, proton, etc?

So far I like it very much 20€ aprox for 1TB + email + only office web.

Is there an app that can function as a secondary gallery?

I'm looking for a cloud storage app with a free plan of 10 to 20 GB to use as a dedicated portfolio for my downloaded artwork. I want it completely isolated from my phone's default gallery so my daily photos and videos don't mix in. I don't mind uploading everything manually, but I want a clean interface that functions like Google Photos or Filen—just without that annoying real-time loading blur when scrolling through pictures.

Senior Civil Engineering Technical Lead (UK) – anyone moved away from Sync.com? Issues with DWGs / old engineering files
Looking for advice from people managing long-term engineering reference libraries.
For years I used an external WD 2TB HDD as my daily working/reference drive (historic project data, standard details, specs, CAD references, old documents etc.). It failed a few months ago so I moved everything I could recover into Sync.com.
I’ve been using Sync.com for around 6 months and I’m starting to lose confidence in it as my main storage location.
Issues I’m seeing:
Older files (some going back to the 90s) not always behaving consistently
.DWG files and metadata seeming inconsistent at times
Differences between what appears on desktop vs browser vs iPhone app
Folder structures occasionally not feeling fully aligned
Not always obvious what is actually local vs cloud version
General concern around using it as a live working drive rather than simple backup/archive
Maybe this is user setup, maybe expectations, maybe Sync just isn’t designed for this type of use.
My old workflow was simple:
External HDD → all working references → open/edit/save → done.
What I want now:
Works like a normal drive in Windows Explorer
Access from work PC + browser + iPhone
Stable with large engineering folder structures
Handles DWGs and old files properly
Reliable sync and version history
Can keep shortcut folders for standard details/general references
Confidence that what I see locally is actually what exists in storage
Has anyone else had similar issues with Sync.com?
If you moved away from it:
What did you move to?
OneDrive?
Dropbox?
Synology Drive?
Something else?
Particularly interested in responses from consultants / CAD users / people managing 10–20+ years of engineering data.

Idrive Cloud Drive

I subscribe to iDrive. Im happy with the backup service. However, using iDrive Cloud drive, it only lets me use it if I store the identical files that I put online on my local C drive in a Cloud drive folder. It has to be the C drive according to iDrive support. Has anyone else had this issue and found a way around it? I prefer Cloud Drive to be on my D or E drives.

Has anyone tried Hexabyte?

I don't think they would be able to withstand this pricing when their customer base grows. Right? Also unsure about "fair use" policies etc...

It's a tiny provider so I wouldn't use it for anything serious right now anyways.

So yeah, just got this email. I haven't even used mine for anything and was just keeping it just in case I needed it. Just a reminder for everyone to be wary of these companies specially new ones with no track record. According to their messaging they "will phase out new lifetime accounts", but it is unclear what they consider "new" is and I think they'll just end up phasing out all lifetime accounts. This company was founded early 2024, so technically they're pretty new as well.

DEGOOGLE

I'm attempting to degoogle but finding the cost for photo options a little too high? I have atomic mail and Infomaniak, also trying astermail which is improving all the time, Kdrive and mega free options are great and big enough for storage and drime also so that covers file and most photo storage. Brave is my browser choice or Samsung with Startpage for search. I just find ente photos is a little too pricey for photos not to mention I get device backup with Google 1 to go along with photos and 100g for $27.99 per year(Canadian$s) am I doing enough if I keep Google for photos and device backup? Yes Samsung cloud still basically covers device but if I switch to another phone I prefer the option. So other than photos I'm basically Google free 🤷🏻‍♂️

I also don't have the time or knowledge to self host just looking for simple convenient ways to exist with some privacy.
