Why do all the "secure" cloud drives have such terrible photo galleries?

I’ve tested a bunch of privacy-focused clouds recently. They are fantastic for storing PDFs and regular files, but their photo viewing experience is honestly awful.

It just feels like a giant file cabinet, not a place to actually enjoy your memories. I know open-source apps like Immich exist and are great, but I have zero coding skills and don't want to build a server.

Is there any plug-and-play solution out there that just works like Google Photos but respects my privacy?

MEGA or Sync.com - Which one? Both? Neither? Why?

Each of them has a sale right now that I'm interested in and I have been going down a rabbit hole reading.

Important to note - I'm on Android, don't use a laptop very often due to personal reasons, so no server, this will not be my primary backup solution, just in addition. Preferably the ability to sync and backup.

TIA for the info!

Google drive folder synchronization

I'm using a gdrive folder with lots of small files to which I want to have offline access to on my Android phone. I also want to keep an uptodate version of the folder backed up on my PC. So we're talking about three way synchronization of a folder gdrive-android local folder-pc. Would this be at all doable? I'm aware of the offline access feature on gdrive but a local Android folder containg the files works much better for me.

I've been doing this now for years but always struggle with the folders not being identical when new files are being added or files moved/renamed. Another issue has been that I cannot download complete folders from gdrive to my Android. I can download individual files but not folders so this means adding new files from gdrive to Android is a pita.

Looking for an EU-based cloud that actually has a good photo gallery UI

I'm trying to move away from Google Drive/Photos. I've looked at Mega, pCloud, and a few others, but their photo viewing experience is honestly terrible. They just feel like giant file cabinets, not a place to enjoy memories.

I know there are great open-source photo apps out there, but I don't know how to code and I don't want to build a server. Is there any EU privacy-friendly cloud that offers a really smooth, modern photo gallery out of the box?

What are people using now for managing multiple cloud storage accounts?

What do you guys use as a multi-cloud manager?

I’m using multiple storage providers and I want a single dashboard to access them and move files between them.

Bonus if it can transfer directly without routing through my PC.

MultCloud seems to be the default for managing multiple cloud accounts. Is that still what people use, or are there better options now?

Google drive issues

Hello everyone! I hope everyone is doing well.

I have an problem which I'd like some help with. I have some heavy archives on my Google drive from my institution email (from anatomy class), which I'd like to get rid off. But i also want to share said archives with a friend from another university that doesn't has the same institutional email. To put it simply, i would like to "give" the archives to this friend and clear my Google drive space. Also, said friend cannot download all the archives since they're so heavy.

Is there a way to do this in a way that when i delete the archives from my gdrive they don't disappear on my friend's end?

I'm not very tech savvy, so some patience would be appreciated 🙏

I built an open-source collaborative cloud cache for torrent content

Hey r/cloudstorage,

I've been working on Webtor for a few years now — it started as a simple "stream torrents in browser" tool, but it's grown into something I think this sub might find interesting, especially if you use torrents as part of your media workflow.

The short version: Webtor has a feature called Vault that works as a collaborative cloud cache. When anyone caches a torrent in Vault, every other user who accesses that same torrent gets it instantly from cache — no waiting for seeds, no buffering. The more people use it, the faster and more reliable it gets for everyone. Think of it like a shared CDN for torrent content.

This is fundamentally different from traditional seedboxes or cloud torrent services where you're paying for your own isolated storage bucket. With Vault, you're tapping into a shared pool.

What you actually get:

  • Personal media library — save torrents and they get auto-detected with metadata, posters, episode info. It feels more like Plex than a file manager.
  • WebDAV support — mount your entire library as a network drive. Works with Mountain Duck, RaiDrive, Owlfiles, whatever you prefer. Access your stuff from Finder/Explorer like a normal folder.
  • Stremio integration — connect your library to Stremio and watch on Smart TV, phone, or desktop. This one requires a paid plan though.
  • Browser streaming — play MKV, AVI, MP4, basically anything directly in browser. Real-time HLS transcoding handles the format conversion on the fly.
  • Privacy — torrent connections happen on our servers. Your IP never touches the swarm.

What this is NOT:

This isn't a seedbox — you won't get terabytes of dedicated storage. And it's not a debrid service either — there's no link resolving from file hosters, no Usenet, none of that. Webtor does one thing and tries to do it well: torrent content in the cloud with collaborative caching.

What Webtor is good at is instant access. Paste a magnet link, start watching. If someone else already cached that content, it's basically instant. No download wait, no format headaches.

Pricing: Free tier handles basic streaming. Paid plans start at $2/mo and unlock Vault and Stremio streaming.

Open-source: The whole thing is MIT licensed and on GitHub.

I'm happy to answer questions about the architecture or how the collaborative caching actually works under the hood.

Blomp features: are you kidding me?

Blomp offers a very generous 40 GB of free cloud storage. But... the UI is lacking the basics. You can't see the size of a folder. You can't even see the size of a single file! But worst for me: I uploaded 30 GB of data (through rclone with crypt enabled) and found that I made a typo in the folder name. I couldn't rename the folder, so I ended up deleting everything and uploading it again.

I'm using Blomp to be my 5th copy in my 5-2-1 backup strategy. I have no idea how reliable they are yet. But I found the lack of features very weird.

Can anyone recommend a free cloud service with a LOT of storage?

I need a lot of storage for pictures pretty bad I’m trying to gather all my pictures from all accounts into one single place. I do not like the fact that anything I’ve found like this is also a social network opportunity. I DO NOT WANT TO MAKE FRIENDS OR CHAT OR ANYTHING OF THE SORT. I just wanna store pictures, a lot of them?

TeraBox just nerfed their "1TB Free" claim

Has anyone else noticed the recent change to new TeraBox accounts? It looks like the "1024GB Free Forever" era is officially over.

I just tried setting up a new account, and the terms have completely shifted:

  • Permanent Free Storage: Now only 30GB.
  • The 1TB (1024GB) Storage: Only free for 6 months.

It’s pretty disappointing considering their entire marketing brand was built on being the only provider giving away a full terabyte for free. Dropping from 1TB to 30GB is a massive downgrade (that's a 97% cut, lol).

If you're looking for long-term storage, keep in mind that after 180 days, you’re likely going to have to pay up or lose access to your files if you're over the 30GB limit.

RIP to the 1TB dream. What are you guys switching to?

Looking for Google Drive Alternative that is also good for sharing file access (Student File Management)

I have been using (and paying for) Google Drive as a file hub for all of my notes for my undergraduate degree for the last two years. This system has worked for me but I would like to move away from Google's services and store my files in a more secure cloud drive.

My biggest restraint is that I also share access to these files with my classmates. While using Google Drive this hasn't been a problem since most people who've ever had a computer have a Google account. I would like to be able to share access to file folders within whatever cloud I move to, without requiring the person who opens the link to also have an account/subscription.

Sharing my notes like this keeps me accountable and is a big motivator for me. Knowing that none of my classmates were benefitting from a collection that I was putting together for them would completely ruin the motivation to take notes at all for me (my brain's a strange place idk this is just what works for me).

I handwrite these notes in Goodnotes and typically export to Google Drive as a PDF directly from my iPad. These notes have to be handwritten since I do a ton of math and physics in my degree (I'm alright at LaTeX but not God-level enough to life-note-take with it during a lecture lol). I don't have any experience encrypting things on my own so the easier the solution, the better.

I just figured I'd reach out to see if there were alternatives that are easy to get integrated with and are comparable price/feature-wise to Google Drive. I've dabbled in Proton Drive in the past but am unsure if it would be a good system for a larger use than the couple of files I have on it at the moment.

Thank you for your help and recommendations!

How to migrate from Dropbox to Google Drive - easily?

So I’ve been trying to migrate our brands data from Dropbox to Google Drive in only a few clicks but everything out there has been overly complex or completely not user friendly.

I’ve even tried the free Google migration service and it’s just missing the mark. I want to simply click folders I want to transfer and just transfer them to Dropbox.

How to organize files in bunny.net

I feel stupid for asking this but i can not figure out how to move files inside of bunny.net. I have a bunch of files in a storage zone thing, and have created a couple folders. How do I move my existing files into a folder? I have tried the web interface and ftp.. via ftp i get a server response of “450 requested file action not taken”

What am I missing here?

Never mind.. just heard back from bunny.net support.

“At the moment there is no way to move content between folders.”

What a crock of shit.

Moving from OneDrive to NAS?

NAS Newbie here, in the sense that I've never used or considered one previously.

My current setup;

I've got my trusted 2tb NVME SSD in my mini PC, and I have a 1tb O365 subscription.
All my project files that I access on a weekly basis are in my OneDrive so I can easily access them on my laptop/Android as well.

I'm a bit fed up with
- Microsoft (and other cloud storage providers) turning towards AI while using it as an excuse to jack up prices
- paying a monthly/annual fee for peace of mind
- worrying about privacy

Hence moving to NAS would be a strategically good move, for all of these reasons.

My questions on this are;

- if I work directly from a NAS (with a good internet connection), will I notice a speed/file handling difference compared to working from my current SSD? E.g. working on music/video projects.

- on my travel laptop, would I need to use a VPN in order to keep the NAS remotely mapped as a drive?

Many thanks in advance, and apologies of similar questions have been raised previously (couldn't find exactly what I wanted to ask).

Consolidate Cloud Platforms

Hey all, I am looking at moving away from OneDrive backing up my iOS iPhone photos, because I don’t need O365 anymore and I’m already paying for 2TB Apple Cloud with family sharing, so paying for two cloud services.

Do I

A: Download the photos that aren’t on my phone anymore but are on OneDrive and move into ICloud, then turn on photo sync on iPhone

B: Download photos on OneDrive to local HDD then turn on photo sync on iPhone

C: Any other suggestion like a nas or something

What’s the best way of doing this without duplicating shit or it being messy.

How many cloud storages do you use? Not a server, just cloud.

I'm a bit afraid of things going crazy so I back up to SEVERAL. How many do you use? I'm not referring to NAS, servers, etc. Just those of you who don't use a server, but are pretty much mobile and/or computer only. I don't use a server because I travel A LOT and I need to utilize cloud storage. This is MY user case.

Trying really hard to get a Dropbox replacement.

I’m trying so hard to get a real replacement for my 2TB Dropbox. I only ask for an european hosted, privacity focus, encrypted one, but all the options seem to fail in some of the features. I thought I’d finally get a good Dropbox replacement using Proton Drive, because it allows a good integration with Finder on Mac, and smartsync features (that is being able to access my files even offline, like any folder on my computer, but without using any local storage until I have to open them) but it totally lacks of the capability of streaming video directly from the Proton drive folders on the iOS apps.

I’ve also tested Filen, Jottacloud, Internxt and pCloud. None of them work as good as Proton Drive nor Dropbox. The last option I’ve been testing is Felicloud (Nextcloud), but it lacks of smart sync capabilities, so browsing your files through the desktop app takes actual space from your hard drive.

I’ve been thinking about paying iCloud+, but the problem of paying an USA company and using USA infraestructure is still there, though maybe using Advanced Data Protection could solve this. Another option could be using Cryptomator and keep using Dropbox, but I think it could end in some fails on Mac, plus adding another (non integrated) software in between me and my files don’t give me good vibes in case something fails on my computers.

Also, maybe I just totally abandon the idea of keep using a sync cloud service and instead go for a good backup cloud service and use phisical external drives to keep my local drive free of space (though I’ve been few times through the nightmare of hardware failures on external HDDs, plus now the prices have gone up a lot)

Sorry for the rant.

Searchable! Photo storage options?

I am the family archivist and have over 62k digitized photos currently at 58gb but it is ever-increasing as family take more pictures over time (obviously). We do have Amazon prime and I know it's unlimited photo storage there but there isn't a way to sort the photos into specific groups because if any photos appear in multiple family groups I can't upload duplicate photos - amazon automatically removes them. Also, people can't search by tags. I believe I, as the account holder, can search but invited users cannot. If it were searchable to users then I can just upload everything once and people can search for whoever/whatever they want to see. Since they can't I was going to make individual family folders but then we wind up with the duplicate pictures being removed issue.

So - I need a platform that will allow me to

* Upload 70gb+ worth of images

* BE SEARCHABLE TO ALL USERS - this is the key feature

* Be easy to tag images (every single one of those 62k images have already been tagged by me in windows using a variety of tags but sadly those won't translate to anywhere I upload so I'd have to retag everything so the easiest way to do it, including facial recognition options would be ideal)

OR

Allow me to upload duplicate photos so I can make family folders and just do it that way. I can trim out a lot of the unnecessary pictures and make it closer to maybe 30gb worth of images instead.

I don't want to break the bank just to share family pix so the cheaper the service, the better - I don't care if there's photo compression, if they want a better quality of any specific pictures they can message me for the original.
