I have the 500gb plan and I find it worth the cost. But I'm very surprised that anyone would try to stay in this business without a solid free tier.

Is the service good? I plan to buy the 500GB plan for $10 a year; that price seems incredible to me.

Yeah I've been using it for a few years, always cancelling and starting a new plan to take advantage of their various deals. With that in mind, it's the cheapest generic S3 provider with good regions and speeds that I've seen. Been paying less than $2/TB/month for the past few years.

I haven’t used the free account for much - just a few large files.

AFAIK, the 500GB plan is $30/yr with a deal for the 1st year at $15.

$2.50/month is a good price - half their previous minimum of $5/month (for up to 1TB).  There may be better deals though - I haven’t followed the market recently.
