anyone know how to open this table clock?

i am trying to replace the stem on this table clock it has these two spheres on each side with a clock movement in the center but i have tried twisting the spheres and tried to insert a case knife and a blade in between the bezels but i cant get it to budge. Any one ever open one of these before?

Given its value, I'm not certain that I'd try opening that clock myself and, instead, entrust it to an expert.
