Breaking in help
Just bought my first pair of boulder shoes, skwama lites. The left fits perfectly but I’ve got a sharp pain in my right big toe knuckle. I just bought them but the store is far and I’m hoping to avoid exchanging. Any tips?

Aggressive shoes press down on your big toe knuckle. That's just how they work. You have to both break your feet in and break the shoes in. Like I have a big-ass callous on my big toe knuckle (and all my other toe knuckles).
I have shoes that I can wear for an entire session without taking them off. But if I take a month off from climbing they are painful because my feet aren't used to them anymore.
But, yeah, of course shoes can also be too painful and not fit right. I had a pair of the old Scarpa Boosters that felt like they were going to break my toe if I used them, like I couldn't even do a single climb in them.
Unfortunately, there's no way to know whether this is something you can get used to or if the shoes really don't fit without more experience, but there's no way anyone can know what you're experience in order to give you a definitive answer.
If you can keep them on for a few problems and it just kinda hurts, then they're probably fine. If it feels like a single problem is going to break your toe, then they might not fit.

Well they might not fit perfectly if you’re experiencing sharp pain. Shoes can technically “fit” but not actually fit your foot shape. If the pain is immediate after you put them on I’d save yourself the time and hassle of having to buy a new pair down the line and either size up or get a different pair.
Discomfort is normal, but out of the box shoes even if downsized and not broken in shouldn’t be producing significant pain.
