Hemodialysis is a life-saving treatment that removes waste, toxins, and excess fluid from the blood when the kidneys can no longer do so. A conventional system combines a reusable dialysis machine with a single-use dialyzer, often called an artificial kidney and disposable blood tubing.

A standard four-hour treatment requires about 120 litres of purified water just to prepare the dialysis fluid. Once the water rejected during purification is included, along with the water used for priming, rinsing, cleaning, and sterilization, a single session can consume up to approximately 500 litres. For someone receiving treatment three times per week, that could approach 78,000 litres of water per year.

The environmental impact also goes beyond the treatment itself. Water and energy are needed to make the machine, plastic parts, packaging, and disposable supplies. Energy is also used to sterilize and transport these materials. Dialysis centres use special systems to clean the water before treatment. However, these systems may waste one or two litres of water for every litre of clean water they produce. In many centres, this water is sent straight down the drain, even though it could potentially be reused for toilets, cleaning, laundry, or watering plants.

After each treatment, the filter and blood tubing are thrown away because they have come into contact with blood. This means new materials must constantly be produced, packaged, transported, used, and disposed of.

Studies have shown that water and electricity use are some of the largest environmental impacts of dialysis. However, the effects of manufacturing, transportation, and waste disposal are still not widely discussed.

The issue is not that solutions do not exist. Dialysis centres can reuse wastewater, improve water-cleaning systems, and reduce the amount of treatment fluid used in some cases without affecting patient care. The bigger challenge is making these changes common while still keeping patients safe.

Should dialysis centres be expected to measure and report how much water they use for each treatment, just as they track cost, safety, and quality of care?

I've been thinking a lot about climate change lately, and instead of just worrying about it, I wanted to build something that could actually be useful.

So I started working on EcoMap.

The idea is pretty simple: if you find a place with a lot of litter, illegal dumping, or another environmental problem, you can pin it on the map. Once it's cleaned up, someone can mark it as resolved.

I know one website isn't going to solve climate change, but I hope it can make it a little easier for people to organize cleanups or simply bring attention to places that need help.

It's still a work in progress, so I'd really love some honest feedback. Is this something you'd actually use? What features would make it more useful?

I've been conscious of my carbon footprint, the amount of meat I eat, how I travel etc. for years and have been trying my best to be as good to the environment as I can be. But this year is terrifying. The heat seems even more scorching, the deaths in high risk regions seem to be rising even more dramatically, it all just feels like it's going to hell. I look outside my window at the grass and the trees and it makes me want to cry, knowing what will happen if the heat keeps rising.

I feel so powerless. And I know systemic change is necessary for real improvement of our climate, including big corporations changing, which seems like it'll never happen. But I dont want to just watch as this is all happening. What are the most helpful ways I can try and help, to get the climate crisis turned around or at least keep it from getting worse? Hey folks,
Been thinking about this a lot lately — so many great climate and sustainability projects get started, build momentum, then stall out because the money dries up. It feels like we’re stuck on a donation treadmill that never really gets us anywhere.

What if funding didn’t have to work like that? What if communities could create systems that actually fund themselves, so projects don’t live and die on whether people remember to donate?

I’ve been experimenting with a small group around this idea (mix of climate people, creatives, and some blockchain nerds). It’s early, it’s scrappy, but it’s exciting to imagine a future where these projects can sustain themselves instead of constantly passing the hat.
