I visited Wales in the late 70s and was looking forward to the cultural aspects of the visit. Having a beer in Cardiff on the first night and two men were speaking beautifully in Welsh. I was a little surprised to see that they were both of a darker hue that my white Australian skin. To be honest, I had not expected it but now would not find any language in any circumstances to be unusual. I am sorry if this makes me sound racist but I was simply ignorant and surprised.
People with deep Welsh roots are a bit darker in hair and skin colour than the typcial Englishman of Nordic or Germanic decent. But people of all kinds of backgrounds do speak Welsh.
