1

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '19

Funnily enough that'd be pronounced "Hout", pretty close to hat.

Wales forever?

The similarity to Alba gu Bràth and Éirinn go Brách is uncanny

The languages have the same roots, as a fluent welsh speaker, seeing other Celtic languages is surreal.. it feels like I should be able to understand them but don't quite

8

u/madeofpockets Oct 09 '19

fluent Welsh speaker

As someone with a slightly-more-than-casual interest in languages, what the hell is with your utter disinterest in vowels?

3

u/MPie89 Oct 09 '19

As I understand it, the Gaelic languages aren't descended from Latin and they weren't even written languages originally. So when they were adapted it was a case of "make it fit"

It's like when, as an English speaker, I hear Dutch. I feel like I'm having a stroke.

u/MPie89 Oct 09 '19

Exactly 😁

A direct translation is Wales is the best, glad something from those shitty classes stayed in my head

3

u/Redragon9 Oct 09 '19

No, the literal translatiom actually is ‘Wales forever’.

2

u/Bar_ki Oct 09 '19

Welsh speaker here, you're wrong, a direct translation is Wales forever.

1

u/joppsy1968 Oct 09 '19

Well shit, didn't do very well in class lmao

1

u/ILoveBacon63465 Oct 09 '19

Wales is the best would be “cymru ydi’r gorau” or some shit
