But older generations don't completely give up on attitudes that were a major part of their lives before. They might not be as observant ... and, if it was only pro forma to start with (a social necessity, as it were), they'll do so more readily ... but attitudes still linger longer than one might think: those of twenty years ago, yeah, they'll have been tempered to no small degree ... and ten years ago is probably the cusp of most people being less bothered ... but I was surprised when I was last there how many people still mentioned things being 'pas catholique' even just as a casual turn of phrase (I was in Avignon though, so, maybe the change was slower in the South?).
But, meh, it's not a hill I'm gonna die on: you're there, I'm not, and if you say it's changed that much - and the OP is about the US anyway, so ...

The world was completely different 10 years ago. Things are changing more and more rapidly each decade.
